they should have died. would have been a great metaphor for innocence lost and losing the childhood mentality as you mature. but this movie holds up, stil
I thought they would die at first when they started holding hands, I wanted to cry. But the claw at first made me jump then when I saw the aliens I laugh my but off!!
my cousins all watched this without me when it came out and told me to go watch it by myself.. right before i went in they told me all the toys died and i didnt believe them.. until this scene.. i was sooo sad
I really don't think I'm the only one who legitimately thought they were going to literally kill a part of my childhood. I'm not sure who was more scared, Woody, Buzz or Myself.
I knew they would be fine, but why that scene got me: They didn't knew! For them they are really going to die and the most they could is die with dignity and together.
I remember sitting in the theater watching this when I was 19 years old and seeing little kids crying at this scene and i thought "YOU DON'T GET TO FUCKING CRY! YOU DIDN'T GROW UP WITH THESE TOYS LIKE I DID!"
the part that gets me is at 1:00 when Woody (being the fighter that he is) is still trying to climb & find a way out, only to look at Buzz and realize theres nothing more they can do
To me this is symbolic of Jesus and the church because when we think its all over and we think we're about to get consumed with the flames of life he comes right in the nick of time
Man this scene is so brilliant even just the music in the background reminds me of everything this scene means even every visual, with just the music by the way, and I tear up ;-;
I didn't find this scene sad at all..I knew they weren't going to die. Who the hell would of thought they were going to do that in a damn PG movie. The ending scene is where the real sadness is. I wept a little at the end.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why is this scene so fucking praised?? its a horrible and cheap way of trying to get an emotion from us, and the whole accepting death thing is just idiotic on a kid´s movie
@gerardz101 I personally didn't like it, but I can see why people do. There's just no scene in the movies that comes close to being as great as this is though.
@WtfSimpleplan Yeah I kinda agree, it was mediocre at best. But in no way it deserved 38% in RT. I honestly think everyone's expectation are so high that anything that wasn't as good as Toy Story 3 'sucks'. I just happened to watch Cars 2 before Toy Story 3 so it doesn't really affect me I guess.
This scene really touched me, just seeing them all in a predicament that's to intense for them to get out of, and just seeing all there little hands coming together, then seeing woody looking up to all of them it seems like he would say wtf are you guys doing? Since he always has something to say about the plans they make, then shortly realizes theres really nothing they can do and then joins them.
I thought this film was good and all, but personally, I would've liked to see the toys catch Lotso and throw his ass in the fire. Then he would scream in agony while there would be detailed animation of his "fur" being burned off, exposing the cotton underneath. Maybe his eyes would melt off, too. Sure, this would've given the film a PG rating and given millions of kids nightmares, but hey, even Sesame Street did it with their I-beam. I'm pretty sick, aren't I?
This scene was so beautiful to me, how they all faced their end together. I almost felt betrayed when they got rescued. But then we got to see Andy's last playtime with the toys at Bonnie's house. So it was worth it.
Is there anything Pixar can't do? Besides curing cancer.
It annoys me that some felt that this scene should have been cut from the movie. Earth to parents: Good movies require genuine conflict. If your child cannot handle said conflict, feel free to leave the theatre or not take your kids-movies shouldn't have to be watered down so you can babysit your kids for two hours.
I already disliked Toy Story 3 because in my opinion, it lost the humorous and zany qualities that the first two movies possessed. This scene basically made my feelings for this movie spiral out of control.
Lotso featured so prominantly in the trailer and merchandise that I had no idea how much of a massive cunt he'd turn out to be. Was anyone else disapointed that he wasn't ripped apart by dogs at the end?
So here's an insight into my thought process while watching this for the first time:
Ha! Cool, how are they going to get out of this? I'm sure they'll be fine. Im... sure... they'll be fine. There's... nothing.... to worry about. They will be fine won't they? They'll... be... Oh god what's happening? What are they doing? They can't do this! They can't do this! No! No! NO! STOP THE FILM! STOP THE FUCKING FILM!
@Beelzeboogie exact same for me. Even though it's Toy Story and a kids film, and this kind of thing happens in every movie, and I thought I knew better, somehow I was convinced that they could actually kill them off.
Only those who watched the first 2 series can fully understand what toys had been through in their whole life. after their owners grown up, most of them will rot in the dumpster. Woody and his friends are only the lucky ones...so, please cherish your toys.
The first time I saw this I was shocked...the movie had been just okay until this scene (I never get the full impact of anything the first time I see it) but this scene, the garbage truck and dump scenes...wow, I got them right away! I don't think I've ever been as "on the edge of my seat" as I was for this. Awesome!
In the theater, me and all the other 18-20 year olds in the room were sobbing, thinking there was no possible way they were going to escape from there and we were all as scared as Woody and the others were, but then out of nowhere...THE CLAW SAVES THEM! Me and a bunch of other people lept out of our seats and whee cheering! we were so relieved!
The newer kids who don't even know these characters didn't understand, screw them :D
@Tmartin1438 the scary thing is, they were going to. for once they wern't going to have a happy ending. that was very early in the writing stages though. before they though up bonnie.
I told my friend as she was about to see this movie in the cinema, that they all died at the end. She didn't really believe me and laughed at me as she went in. Later she came out totally red-eyed from bawling, cringing and weeping through this entire scene because she actually started to believe what I said was true.
i grew up with toy story and i cant remember the last time i was as tense as i was watching this unfold. im still a kid inside like many of you, but there's nothing wrong with that.
God when Buzz holds his hand out to Woody, I was openly sobbing in the theatre, at least 40% sure that PIxar was now brave enough to kill the entire cast.
i showed this movie to my little niece on dvd, and pretty much at exactly this time the dvd broke and i couldnt get it restarted.

The reason why this scene is powerful is because it is a visual picture is a spiritual reality. We are all a fallen human race because of our sin. Every soul without Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is destined for Hell. In God's love, Jesus comes to take our sin away and lifts us out of the place of judgment.
@BlackHispanicTParty Or it's most likely the fact everyone grew up with toy story. and seeing this We think "oh god it's going to end. Is this saying my childhood was just inevitable?" Take your god-speech to church. This is the internet. A godless realm of lulz and other people's misfortune :D Besides. Jesus went to hell when he died. He just came back which allowed others to start going to the other place hurr.
@BlackHispanicTParty I am 12 and my dad is a preacher you dont see comment like this any where spread it around I have spent my youtube life trying to stay as good as possibly but everyone seems to wanna cuss
so i have been betrayed by 2 characters i trusted alot since the summer, lotso and sentinel prime curse you guys for making me trust you! haha :) i love those movies :)
@theblackstratocaster - Toy Story was a kid's movie but now it's for those of us who were born in the 90's haha, and who grew up loving these characters...little kids nowadays are into that prissy stuff, so yeah this is way too deep for a modern kid :p
I swear, it was brilliant to leave this sequence mostly dialogue-free. The way the music swells and all the emotions flit through the character's eyes-*sob*
Even as a cynical adult watching this KNOWING they weren't going to die, I still cried like a baby.
Ive seen this scene at least 30 times and eveytime I see it I cry. The 1st time I saw this in the theater and they started holding hands I just said in my head "Screw it Im about to cry!"
It would be cool if they had the toys get closer to the flames and then have Woody have a flashback or flash before his eyes about his first meeting with Andy
There's something about Woody's expression that gets me. He's usually so optimistic, and he's the leader, he always has a plan and he almost never gives up hope. He cheered Buzz up in Toy Story and helped Sid's toys. He gave Jesse and Bullseye a new home, and helped all his friends to escape Sunnyside. So sinking and knowing he can't get out is just heartbreaking.
Heartbreaking scene. Pixar is such an brilliant company.
I love Pixar movies, but for me the Toy Story films will be the most beloved of all that they made. I was 8 years old when I saw the first one, so Woody and the others stick with me after 16 years. Every time I watch Toy Story (ecspecially the third one) I'm feel like became a better human.
Jerks, they dd it on purpose. Can't complan though I guess, I am happy they are alive but this scene convinced me that they were gonners.

He just came back which allowed others to start going to the other place hurr.

anyone else getting the feeling that this is too deep for a kids movie? lmao but im a 90's kid through and through.
theblackstratocaster 4 months ago
@theblackstratocaster - Toy Story was a kid's movie but now it's for those of us who were born in the 90's haha, and who grew up loving these characters...little kids nowadays are into that prissy stuff, so yeah this is way too deep for a modern kid :p

My god this scene is intense for a G RATED MOVIE????
SpencerRianBacon 4 months ago
I swear, it was brilliant to leave this sequence mostly dialogue-free. The way the music swells and all the emotions flit through the character's eyes-*sob*
Even as a cynical adult watching this KNOWING they weren't going to die, I still cried like a baby.

@Lopoddity You damn right. I cried to, and the music and their face emotions is really intense.

I swear I always tear at the part when buzz offers woody his hand. Something about the look on woody's face during that moment Rly gets to me :(

@banjo1154 Yeah, that is sad. It's like all the fight went out of him when he just realized this was it.
