@LedZepSk8 It gets worse, when I watched it it featured a "teaser" for a Lil' Wayne and Bruno Mars duet video. They ain't teasing me. Teasing me would be a Ronnie Van Zandt and John Lennon video. Ni66a.....please
Back when music used to actually mean something, and if you listened to REM, it was a comment on your entire lifestyle, likes, and dislikes. It was a way of life.
That's NYC in the 1980s. Homeless men sleeping on the streets, right on the sidewalk.
There's one making his bed in the shadow of the USS Intrepid, a tribute to our great democracy's might of arms and armies. There's another one, passed out on the sidewalk across the street from Madison Square Garden.
Bloomberg cleaned the streets up and sent the homelss to sleep at the Armory. You can't have that sight wrecking it for the tourists in new "New York as Disneyworld" version.
@lithead i was in NYC in 1982 and 1985, Times Square was quite a place back then, but for a ten year old it was quite scary too, if you seen Taxi Driver u know what i mean... we were told to to stick on the avenues at night, not in the dark back streets and the alleys, that was wise cos there were people lying there drugged out in the gutters.... but nowadays as i seen on tv the blocks around Times Square are more like Disneyland... they cleaned out good, they did,
@EnjoyTheSurface Yep! I was there during the "Tax Driver" years of the '70s. Times Sq. was all hookers, three-card monte, electronics store, and porn theaters. The cleanest it ever looked was July 4 weekend in '76 (the day I saw "Chorus Line" in preview) Op-Sail was being held for the Bicentennial and the city was SPOTLess, the weather clear and gorgeous - the best Now it's all for tourists and the wealthy hedge fund traders and bankers. Just one more incarnation in a constant: NYC.
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual doom." ~ MLK
@armadillosignshop hahahahhaha. little known fact: not only was Obama born outside of the US but he is in-fact a two thousand year old evil wizard who first rose to prominence as the primary songwriter for R.E.M. Which is why armadillo's comment really fits well on this page.
@armadillosignshop Please refresh my memory...how much is useless, illegal war of aggression of Bush's costing us every month? Hmm, how many soldiers and civilian lives has it cost us? The worst thing Obama did was continue Bush policy, which was enough.
Stupid Youtube commenter is stupid. Bush admin had worst job creation than any president in history. Nice Reganonmics that worked out to be. Trickle down effect. Trickling urine that is.
Undoboudted the greatest video I have ever saw. It makes me cry everytime I see it. I'm from a small town and i couldn't imagine having to sleep in a box, or beg for food. And I think I've got it back because i'm addicted to pills. These people couldn't get meds to save their life. God Bless......Chad W.

So sad they're breaking up. Spent so many good times in college trying to figure out what the lyrics meant.

@dlzaragoza or WHAT the lyrics were. I loved REM but Michael Stype could mumble with the best of them, especially during the first 4 albums. :-)

My guess is that this video is shot in NYC in the early 80's. Aren't all of us NYC'ers glad they fixed up the Hudson River Park?
juliekstroup 1 year ago
@juliekstroup Well, it was actually shot in '88 (although the song came out in '83).

God, this is so great. They were such a great band back then, long before Stipe became the over-annunciating, dancing sprite he is today.
