lol, no its famous because the british had not been defeated by a modern weapon bearing army for a long time, they were considered by most of the world invincible (as they were undefeated and had a large empire). the zulus HAD no knowledge of european warfare - yet they slaughtered them. thats why its famous, nd thats also why the british crushed the zulus as quickly as they could after the battle - IT WAS QUITE THE EMBARRESSMENT LMAO

isit surprising though that it was only the once halldisa as the zulu were not actually a war based civilasation as most western historians have discribed, infact war to the zulus was a time to morn and was dispised.

zuluboogieno1, I was born in Zululand in SA and lived there for many years.

The Zulus were the greatest power in the region until the Europeans came, and this was mainly becos they WERE a warrior nation, fighting and raiding neighbouring tribes etc.

This was one of the reasons they gave the british alot of touble and their impis defeated them at Isandwala.

Zulus are known and respeced around the world for all this.

well i disagree aswell as keepers of zulu oral history, he told me that infact war was dispised by the zulu people as a whole and that the most common misconception about our ancestors is that they were mainly (as you also said) a war-like people. females were a fairly dominant source in zulu society, infact shakas campagins were organised and planed by a woman (his mum i think). dont get me wrong the tactics used at the battle were genius, but much like the native indians the world tends .....

.... tends to think that they must have been a society based around war and men. Infact this was the europeans, as the natives of both africa and america had strong balances and mutual respect between sexes and also there natural environment, war was not sought after, infact peace was sought time and time again untill all else failed. this says that they were not a war like people, unlike modern america and its aggressive stance in the world today for example. i hope my point is clearer...

They only lost it because their ammunition support was poor, their weaponry was slow loading and they had incredibly poor numbers and hand-to-hand combat, they relied on cavalry and their shitty guns XD

yes that is the arguement that many Brits use, however they had defeated hundreds of native armies (AND european) across the globe before the zulus, with relative ease, exceptions made to the carribean maroons. also note that they had even worse weapons before the zulu war. It was also an invasion force and i doubt they were undersupplied, it was more ignorance and plain imperial arrogance that led 2 the british defeat @ ishandlwana. many Brits thought africans were animals at that time.

Ive been to south africa and have heard from ZULU historians the OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY, therefore i have heard BOTH sides of the story. which is what any self respecting historian (and court of law) would do to get a good understanding of what happened. you cant call me Biased either as my mother is a white Brit and my father is a black southafrican of zulu descent. both are proud of tehre heritageand it gives me a pretty good understandingof both views.were do you get your history from?
