Belle IS a princess,I have watched this movie for a long time.Not just the original But ALL of the movies sold with Belle in it. because in the Christmas AND Originalits specifically explains the beast's past.He was a prince, and was extremely selfish. He was sitting on his throne recieving gifts from his servants, when one of them gave him a storybook. A beggar knocks at the door. He answers it, and she asks him for shelter in exchange for an inchanted rose. He refuses, and turns her away.
