Her eyes give her away here. She is totally vacant in this performance. This is one of her better vocal performances, after her vocal cords began to get permanently swollen from all her smoking up. The fact that she can even pull this song off at all in her condition, is a testament to her godly talents.
I hope someday we will be blessed with another singer just as earth trembling as she used to be.
I thinks the thing about her is that she just has a certain beauty to her voice so that even if it's damaged or her technique goes south....it's still familiar. I like this performance even though it's not as bombastic as the other live performance of this song..
obviously this performance is not as good as the 1989 one, but it's still pretty good. remember that this was 1997 and her voice was really starting to change..
wAAAAAAAAY too many fukkin clips inserted over her performance AND she aint singin 'right' even at this point...she 'muffs' the two 'climax' notes at the end...badly!!Still...compared to anyone else it's a great rendition,though the Grammy one is still her template/zenith!!

This is the legacy that Whitney has to face, she has such a history of being such a powerhouse, well beyond all others that when she slips even a little people are all over her. They were never expect this of anyone else.
She wasn`t bad here, but she lacked some of the power she usually displays. Even on a bad day, she is pretty good.Half her talent is more than most people have.
High notes were definitely off. She only hit the last note in falsetto. I mean this would be a good performance if you didn't have her past ones to compare.

the reason why she was struggling on this performance is because the atmosphere in on a football field that size with so many people there could be overwhelming...mainly, when she first sang that song she was so much younger at a time when her voice hadn't quite developed into her adult voice...these are the reasons that her performance here didn't sound like it did when this song was release...keep in mind, that she sung the song as when we first heard it, and she sang it now, many yrs later

A voice, as an instrument can't be sustained or tuned like a guitar or piano. A little wear and tear will force one to lower the key a half step or two. A voice like Whitney's doesn't lesson a great song by doing so. But yes, she sounds here like that huskiness was beginning to take hold. You gotta take care of yourself.

the reason why she was struggling on this performance is because the atmosphere in on a football field that size with so many people there could be overwhelming...mainly, when she first sang that song she was so much younger at a time when her voice hadn't quite developed into her adult voice...these are the reasons that her performance here didn't sound like it did when this song was release...keep in mind, that she sung the song as when we first heard it, and she sang it now, many yrs later
