gays are not animals or robots. they have freewill and even if they didn't have freewill it still would not justify labeling their relationship something that its clearly not because it is biologically impossible for same sex couples to procreate and rear-children NATURALLY. its not about being straight or gay to be able to enter the institution. its about whether you can help society as a whole
I share your frustration! Live and let live is the best solution, but there will always be those who want to meddle in someone else's life. Sometimes I think that the only solution is to wait for those who are so backward in their thinking to literally 'pass on', because they will never see the light. I agree with your solution to have the govt perform civil unions, and leave marriage ceremonies to the churches. Separation of church and state, as it should be.
