actually, according to Douglas Adams, almost all versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide completely contradict each other, but i still think that this Marvin was amazing. great song, by the way.
I too preferred the original 1980 version, especially the animated Guide sequences--the movie version just didn't cut it for me. But yes, Alan Rickman was a good choice for Marvin if they couldn't get Stephen Moore.
i have to say that i liked the 2004 movie more than those series..i know that anyone could troll about Mos Def or about some missing jokes..but if you read the book, you don't need to hear the same jokes in the movie (just my opinion)
..i prefer RICKMAN, Deschanel and Freeman....and when i am reading the book again, i always imagine Ford as a black guy..and i can enjoy it
Every version of H2G2 has differed to a greater or lesser degree from the original Radio series. I think the problem was really in the casting, although Alan Rickman was OK as the voice of Marvin
@QuackVideo Douglas Adams made all the different versions of Hitchhiker different on purpose. Marvin's voice is a configuration on a synthesizer. Anybody who speaks into the machine sounds like Marvin, so it's all about the tone and inflection of the speaker.
Marvin's voice feels far more appropriate in the original TV series. Neither movie was very good, but the 2004 movie made only a token effort to actually adhere to the plot of Hitchhikers' Guide, and that pretty much ruined the experience. I mean, I understand that the beauty of the book was its glorious randomness and the sheer diversity of characters, experiences and locales, but uncoupled from Adams's brilliantly dry and understated comic writing, it comes off pretty flat.
@groovyastrodude You might not be aware that the screenplay for the movie was written by Adams himself, and any deviations from the original story were therefore his. According to Robbie Stamp, his only contribution to the screenplay was only tightening up a few lines.
Course I have a pain in the diodes all down my left side but nobody listens. Did the Earth have oceans? Arthur Oh yes great big rolling oceans. Marvin, can't stand oceans. What a pity the movie was such a mess this was made in 1980 and so much better thank you Douglas you are sadly missed.
I had seen the 2004 movie first, then the 80's TV Series. Now I cannot stand the movie, it's like they took out all the funny jokes and completely mixed up the story. The only point toward the '04 movie was it's budget, but I think that they did a much better job considering their low budget on the 80's series.
So your theory of if you'd see the movie first you'd hate the new one is obsolete, for I saw the movie first and PREFER the 80's one.
Because it's about robots in general and Marvin in particular. In any case, there are only so many repeats of Marvin walking down the corridor before it becomes boring
