this reminds me of my mate 1 tune harry he played this on a christmas session we had in dunbar and he was still knocking it out when he only had 1 string left on his banjo great day way back in 1983 was workin on torness power station hard graft but gr8 mates very drunk that day
I sing "In Yarmouth town there lived a man, kept a little tavern on the sand." Yarmouth is built on the sand and the `rows` that developed there would have had pubs / taverns on the sand. There is no strand in Yarmouth IOW or Great Yarmouth for that matter...as for Maine USA.... they`ll be saying Nelson himself was born there next. i`LL TAKE THE ANORAK OFF NOW!
Thanks for Posting this. It sounds as great and fresh now as it did all those years ago. I remember when it was a single, which unfortuantely I never owned, but used to love hearing it on a Juke-Box in a pub I used to go to. It never appeared on an album. Anybody know of any downloadable version anywhere? I'd love to have it on my Ipod.
Download Realplayer. Download this clip. Using Realplayer you can then rip the sound to a CD. You can of course do this to any Youtube clip. I've made some ace CD's of all kinds of stuff. Regards, Dave
Who saw a prog on BBC the other night on Paul Brady? Great clips of Paul shown incl a piece of this.
He told of his being over in the US touring with the Johnstons and getting a letter saying would he join Planxty, he took up the offer without hesitation.
The lineup here is Paul, Johnny Moynihan, Christy M, Andy and Paul.
I saw Andy in concert a fortnight ago, a small attendance but he was great - as usual.
I was searching for the Clancy's version of this song, but Andy and the boys play it 20 times better! Man, I wish he or Christy would tour near the midwest of the US... Thanks for the post, Bilko!
Great Yarmouth is in Norfolk and as the late Sam Larner used to sing this song and he was from Lowestoft, I'd guess that it's that Yarmouth that is meant.
Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, I reckon. 'Tis just off the South coast of England and would've been frequented by all sorts of seafaring blackguards, giving rise to cracking sea-shanties such as this one.
The lineup in this video is interesting. Johnny Moynihan on bouzouki filling in for Dónal Lunny and Paul Brady on what appears to be the harpsichord, but I'm not sure it could also be the clavinet.
As usual this is another excellent video from you! Is it at all possible to buy Sesions From the 70's? I taped them when they were on BBC a good few yrs ago but foolishly lost them by lending them out. I'd love to hear again the clip of Andy Irvine accompanying David McWilliams on a great song called Twenty golden years from the same program.
It's 4/4 like a slow reel. Too slow for dancing. BTW, dance music is good to listen too. Additionally, this is a TV show, and I guess that the producer would not like the audience to lose control ... Just my 2 pence...
Bob Dylan borrowed this song for his 'Oxford Town'.

which Yarmouth is this song about....canada or the states?

Yarmouth in the United Kingdom, at a guess. There is a lot of crossover between traditional irish and english songs.

Definetely not a harpsichord, but a continous - note keyboard inst. for sure.
Just a gem of a performance.
wqpeb 3 years ago
Looking at the feet-driven bellows below the keyboard and listening to the chords underneath the guitar and bouzouki, I'd say it's a harmonium.
Paul Brady has been known to use one on occasion. Kind of like Andy Irvine and a hurdy-gurdy, I suppose.

Naw,
(Great) Yarmouth, Norfolk. The source is an East Anglian traditional singer, Harry Cox. It was collected back in the 1950s
SpikeLancaster 4 years ago 3
Versions of the song were collected as early as 1892.

This turns up on Andy Irvine's own website, it's credited as a recording on a BBC programme. It's vintage Planxty-great stuff.
