  • Bob Dylan borrowed this song for his 'Oxford Town'.

  • I can't stop watching this - the whislte is sublime....I know I need food, water and air....but a part of me thinks that all I need is this song.

  • @CackleMyGladdis ive probably listened to this a 100 times, its all about that tin whistle!!unreal!

  • this reminds me of my mate 1 tune harry he played this on a christmas session we had in dunbar and he was still knocking it out when he only had 1 string left on his banjo great day way back in 1983 was workin on torness power station hard graft but gr8 mates very drunk that day

  • could have even been yarmouth nova scotia

  • I sing "In Yarmouth town there lived a man, kept a little tavern on the sand." Yarmouth is built on the sand and the `rows` that developed there would have had pubs / taverns on the sand. There is no strand in Yarmouth IOW or Great Yarmouth for that matter...as for Maine USA.... they`ll be saying Nelson himself was born there next. i`LL TAKE THE ANORAK OFF NOW!

  • Its a sailor's song, could've just as easily been Yarmouth, Maine for that matter.

  • Here bilko, I think these are probably '79

  • Yarmouth, Nova Scotia?

  • @wheely28 newfoundland i bet

  • yarmouth is a shithole

  • @frogbucket Are you sure ? I heard it described as GREAT Yarmouth :)

  • best shit ever

  • @nikosingelakis2009 this comment made my fuckin day

  • As I suspected Christy Moore has always been an ugly fella.

  • Does anyone know if Andy played a standard scale GDAE tuned mandolin back then? :)

  • @Holm182 GDAD

  • @1995ek Thank you! :)

  • well Irvine is British you know! he comes from up there somewhere, the midlands

  • What a brilliant little song!

  • yeah rock on yarmouth

  • Very Nice!!!!

  • great song thanks for posting

  • Thanks for Posting this. It sounds as great and fresh now as it did all those years ago. I remember when it was a single, which unfortuantely I never owned, but used to love hearing it on a Juke-Box in a pub I used to go to. It never appeared on an album. Anybody know of any downloadable version anywhere? I'd love to have it on my Ipod.

  • Download Realplayer. Download this clip. Using Realplayer you can then rip the sound to a CD. You can of course do this to any Youtube clip. I've made some ace CD's of all kinds of stuff. Regards, Dave

  • Yay!! Thanks Dave. Advise much appreciated. I now have it on CD and in my itunes library. Great.

  • @pmckern Free youtube to Mp3 converter. search on google

  • Thanks for that. in the meantime I enjoyed your accordian palying

  • Great stuff!

  • Is it me or did all 70's folk musicians have long legs and short torsos?

  • @NameNotaNumber

just an illusion of the high-waist pants

  • @NameNotaNumber

not everyone wears their pants around their ankles

  • @StimJunkie Yarmouth's a bitterly cold town. How else are the ladies there to keep their ankles warm, eh?

  • Man, do I love songs about whores!

  • Gaspode18 got it right, definitely Yarmouth in Norfolk, England! Wonder if Andy learned it off Peter Bellamy?

  • I am enchanted by this kind of music.

And what an absolutely gorgeous man this Andy Irvine!

  • Who saw a prog on BBC the other night on Paul Brady? Great clips of Paul shown incl a piece of this.

He told of his being over in the US touring with the Johnstons and getting a letter saying would he join Planxty, he took up the offer without hesitation.

The lineup here is Paul, Johnny Moynihan, Christy M, Andy and Paul.

I saw Andy in concert a fortnight ago, a small attendance but he was great - as usual.

  • Excellent!

  • Wonderful!

  • There is also a Yarmouth in the south end of Nova Scotia.

  • as mentionned 4 times before ...

  • what great artists!!

  • I love Planxty! their music hits me right in the soul.

  • wow cool

  • i like this :)

  • Geniuses these fellas!

  • This song is absolutely fantastic! and Im not Irish.

  • Don't worry neither is the song

  • I was searching for the Clancy's version of this song, but Andy and the boys play it 20 times better! Man, I wish he or Christy would tour near the midwest of the US... Thanks for the post, Bilko!

  • Oh man, I've been looking for this video for a long time. I've always loved this song and the playing in this clip is fabulous. Thanks!

  • which Yarmouth is this song about....canada or the states?

  • Yarmouth in the United Kingdom, at a guess. There is a lot of crossover between traditional irish and english songs.

  • Great Yarmouth is in Norfolk and as the late Sam Larner used to sing this song and he was from Lowestoft, I'd guess that it's that Yarmouth that is meant.

  • Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, I reckon. 'Tis just off the South coast of England and would've been frequented by all sorts of seafaring blackguards, giving rise to cracking sea-shanties such as this one.

  • Nice!!! Another classic Planxty performance.

  • omg i live in yarmouth

  • Don't you feel privilaged to have a song written about a prossie in your town?!

    Xx

  • Seriously now Bilko- where do you get this stuff!! Another with Moynihan!

  • Definetely not a harpsichord, but a continous - note keyboard inst. for sure.

Just a gem of a performance.

  • Looking at the feet-driven bellows below the keyboard and listening to the chords underneath the guitar and bouzouki, I'd say it's a harmonium.

Paul Brady has been known to use one on occasion. Kind of like Andy Irvine and a hurdy-gurdy, I suppose.

  • The lineup in this video is interesting. Johnny Moynihan on bouzouki filling in for Dónal Lunny and Paul Brady on what appears to be the harpsichord, but I'm not sure it could also be the clavinet.

  • It's a harmonium. Watch the feet, pumping ...

  • Im a nova scotian boy my self Antigonwhere

  • Marvellous! Andy's a great folksinger. I enjoyed his work with Sweeney's Men and Planxty.

Hello to nurse Kate, who works in a Western Australian children's hospital. I know Kate's sister loves this number.

Greeting to one and all from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.

  • hi Bilko!

As usual this is another excellent video from you! Is it at all possible to buy Sesions From the 70's? I taped them when they were on BBC a good few yrs ago but foolishly lost them by lending them out. I'd love to hear again the clip of Andy Irvine accompanying David McWilliams on a great song called Twenty golden years from the same program.

Thank You for sharing these clips with us.

    All the best!

  • Wonderfull, wonderfull early Planxty, just to say thankyou bilko1234 for these legendary recordings.

  • Yarmouth Nova Scotia sucks conpaired to Halifax, Truse me i lived there for 15 years of my life

  • no its yarmouth nova scotia..great big sea also sings this song

  • Yarmouth Nova Scotia Right

    Very Nice

  • Naw,

(Great) Yarmouth, Norfolk. The source is an East Anglian traditional singer, Harry Cox. It was collected back in the 1950s

  • Versions of the song were collected as early as 1892.

  • This turns up on Andy Irvine's own website, it's credited as a recording on a BBC programme. It's vintage Planxty-great stuff.

  • To the best of my knowledge it's on the east coast of England yes.

  • The yarmouth in the title, does it relate to what is now great yarmouth in norfolk?

  • This Planxty lineup is from left, Johnny Moynihan, Andy Irvine, Christy Moore, Liam O'Floinn and Paul Brady.

  • why is no one dancing?? =)

  • To Yarmouth Town? It's not a dancing beat.

  • hmm sounds like dancing music to me =)

  • Well it isn't.

  • It's 4/4 like a slow reel. Too slow for dancing. BTW, dance music is good to listen too. Additionally, this is a TV show, and I guess that the producer would not like the audience to lose control ... Just my 2 pence...

  • I love it!!!.. :D XD...

  • Great Big Sea does a great version of this tune.

  • Yes! Excellent- never seen Planxty footage with Moynihan before either

  • rare rare rare stuff on any one of planxty records thanx!!!

  • The man on the left is not Donal Lunny, right? Does anybody know, who it is?

  • Johnny Moynihan

  • OH yeah this chune is sick

'lot of caps popped listenen to this one

    in Lister's Pub nice beard

  • Cool! Never saw footage of them with Moynihan and Brady before.

  • Thanks for posting it. Planxty was the best band ever ;)

  • Nice!!! Another classic Planxty performance. Thanks a million for posting it.
