White's queen exchange is bizarre. Black's queen isn't particularly menacing, nor is the threatened bxn, since White can play the multipurpose Ne4. White simply trades an imaginary weakness for a real one: isolated pawns which Black picks off at his leisure.
@ChessNetwork hello im a great fan of your videos jerry, cheers for posting them, I have a quetion at time 6:03 in this video I was wandering what white could do if you where to instead of playing knight f3, simply playing bishop f3, and then picking off the g4 pawn, im sure it doesn work but if you could explain how that would be appreciated?? cheers for your time jerry
Jerry this is great but I wish you would have indicated where your opponent really went wrong. Are you saying that the pawn push to g4 is what did him in, the move you term an inaccuracy? Looks more like a blunder to me.
at 3:55 why wouldnt you want to take his pawn with yours so that you dont have to sacrifice your knight? theres probably a really obvious answer for this, I havent been playing chess for very long
@MrCman404 As far as I can tell, the pawn on d5 will be isolated and can be attacked by white, so black would have to protect it using pieces which halts the attack, which is undesirable.
Thanks in advance to your devotion on chess, I believe more people have benefitted from this than you can imagine.
I know this is an old post, but I'd like to comment on the Q "varunshah88" asked, about the Rxh2 move @9:17 which seems to immobilize the WK, but then W could respond with R-g2 freeing the WK as well as putting pressure on B, because capturing the WR puts B's pieces too close to WK. If [... RxR], then [B-e3 R-h2].
@varunshah88 Thank you for replying. I'm guessing that you mean if W plays Rg2, B would capture with either R or B. Yes, that is correct, and like I said in my previous post, I believe this capture would actually place the B pieces too close to the WK, which wouldn't be as clean a kill as the original one. Besides, White's position seems too fragile for anything to take effect. I could be wrong though, so please feel free to let me know what you think.
@9:17 where king played Kf1, why didn't you play Rxh2, with a threat of Bd3 mate. To which 1 reply I thought was Be3 to that Bd3, Rxd3, Rb1#. Is there any defense that white has to this?
@7:10 "In chess when you see a good move, try and find a better one"
:-) Nice, i should remember that one.
I liked how in this game you avoided some obvious moves where you could gain material and thought beyond that (earlier on in the game you refused to be tempted to take the g2 pawn with your queen). This really helps me in my development as a chess player.
Thanks! Great game. I can really see how you are seeing more than I and what work I have ahead of me to get from ~2000 to master level. This is very much appreciated!
Hi, Jerry. Why not make a video on openings and show games out of this opening with annotations? I am saying this because I find you good in explaining moves. Why not put your book in video form, so we can easily grasp the idea compared with written words. Where can we see more of your games on video? Thanks very much.
Jerry, howaya? New peak rating of 1486 reached two days ago, plus now 2 victories on opponents 1700 or higher and 5 victories against opponents 1600 or higher, may not mean much to u but they are the best opponents(rating wise) that i have beaten, just a quick update any way, y not Bb5 after pawn e6 in the opening, im confused about that, when i try this line i feel like i fall behind in development i have also seen line where Kc6 is played before pawn e6? Which is more correct? and Y
I have a question CN, At 9:25 in the video you talk about winning a piece. Couldn't you have kept rook on H3, move bishop to F3 attacking the rook. His rook moves to say E1, and your B2 Rook takes his bishop on D2?
the move g4 is part of the Keres Attack. It was a bad move in the position though. g4 is meant to be played right after e6. You can learn the main variations on wiki if you search Sicilian_Defence,_Scheveningen_Variation.
King to e3 was his undoing. Judging, if one can by your aggressive state of mind at that moment. Which means i have to ask; what would you have done if, instead of his king he moved the rook from g1 to d1? Or even if he placed his knight before your rook on d6?
Very enjoyable game this was, your commentary was also very welcome.
i love your vids, they have helped me out alot so far. i have one suggestion, not sure if other ppl are like me but when i see a blurr of blue arrows pointing to attacks, indirect attack, pins, future moves and so forth i get lost. just wondering if in the future if you can color pieces different when you are showing alot of stuff going on at once like @ 1:24 for example or simpling using two different colors for white and black would also work alot better.
Sorry for being a pain, I know I can be, I just love chess even though I'm no good and I am so exited my nephew has taken a liking to it as well, would like to guide him properly. Didn't you say you played with masters from early on? I remember the phrase "high class moves or master class moves" in one of ur vids.
@ChessNetwork and did you just play against them? or did they kinda walk you thru the whole game? sort of like a lesson while playing, I was walking my nephew thru at least on blunders i let him replay them all and told him to tell me why they were bad moves, he answered them all right. But this is what i mean, no one walked me thru any games it was years of heartache and torment b4 i started to play better and i still basically can't play that well only about 1200 level.
@KBoogs719 I just played against them. I learn from my experiences...my losses. I don't think u'd need to get someone else. If you understand a video on utube, you could relay it to him directly or translated in your own way. Just make sure that the person who made the video is credible so that poor advice isn't relayed.
Hi Jerry, how would you go about teaching a kid to play chess? I'm teaching my nephew, he knows how the pieces move, trying to just get him to make even trades for now, before i get into anything fancy, like center control and development and all that. Do you agree with this approach and do you have any suggestions?
@ChessNetwork ok i will try to use it for some pointers, do you think it is ok to teach what i know or immediately try to get him a better tutor? And do you suggest any themes to avoid at my current skill level (1200-1300).
Just to let you know that I managed to beat a 1745 player with this opening (transposing from the French). I was able to double his c pawns by exchanging a bishop for his knight on c3 and won the ensuing rook & pawn ending easily due to the poor coordination of his pieces. Thanks for posting this, always look forward to your stuff. Watched all you WCC analysis and am eagerly awaiting your next video.
Excellent commentary. I'm studying the Sicilian defense and many of the initial moves seem mysterious to me. You helped to clarify what is going on. Thanks.
are you playing off of the cartaridge or an R4? just wondering? because you could download a rom for "1500 DS Spirits Vol. 7" because it has more then 3 difficulties. it is in Japanese but it isnt hard to figure out. anyways. just thought that may help some. good luck
Thanks for the vid, very instructive. I usually play the Dragon variation but since I've learnt the Yugoslav attack as white I'm less confident and may now try this variation.
Nice game. I like the adage "In chess, when you find a good move, look for a better one!" Nice advice! I think this video is very instructive on the topic of "in between" moves. There are several instances where you have applied enough pressure to win material, but instead choose to maintain the pressure in the position. In fact you only grab material if and when it indeed strengthens your position.
White played a very poor positional game, wouldn't you say? Your pieces moved so smoothly while he was opening up all sorts of weaknesses and getting chased around and threatened in all sorts of ways
I think g4 was a poor move since it ended up just working against white...hole on f3...exposed rook on h1. In summary, g4 looks aggressive but is unsound.
it amazes me you can see so many possibiliites/so far ahead during each move of the game. lol, i try but keepin track and miscalculations are some of my weaknesses. thx ur a phenomenal teacher and player of the game
Really enjoyed that scilian scheviningen, i like that line, it deviated a liitle from the main line with the move G4 by white, i dont often see that. That was a well analyzed game, keep them coming!!
Thank you for a splendid analysis, once again! I really like that you explain the decisive moves with more detail which lets the beginners to stay in the game. =) For example, without proper analysis the a6 move in 01:07 looks pretty weak considering the basic theory of openings (usually moving rook pawns isn't too great of a move) so it's a very good thing you keep explaining these more deeply. Great work, again! =)
It's a fantastic video! Thank you very much! For a novice, talentless, lazy Sunday-kind-of-player like me a video like this is so much more digestable than a textual analysis. Also, being an inexperienced player, I'm often baffled by the more obscure and farsighted strategems employed at the top, Grandmaster level. Classic games tend to make the game appear like a grave subject of study sometimes :) OK, I know this was a bit blasphemic :D
Anyway, I absolutely revel in your clear narrative!
I learned something from this video, the e6 variation to sicilian. I think I'll start using it instead of playing... whatever I usually play. I usually play a6 first, I think and I'm was getting tired of it. Great video!
I'm really not sure. I know that after e6, white has the option of going for the Keres Attack with g4. So maybe this is a reason for e6 not being the best version?! It's only the 2nd time I've played the Sicilian in tournament. I still have a lot to learn regarding this opening. Thanks for the compliments! *handshake* =)
excellent analysis! ive been looking for just this kind of game breakdown. cheers!

Great job, CN. Your commentary is one of the clearest and most instructive on YouTube.
Incidentally, I've heard the Scheveningen is not the best version of the Sicilian for black. What do you think of this?
MavPlaysChess 2 years ago
I'm really not sure. I know that after e6, white has the option of going for the Keres Attack with g4. So maybe this is a reason for e6 not being the best version?! It's only the 2nd time I've played the Sicilian in tournament. I still have a lot to learn regarding this opening. Thanks for the compliments! *handshake* =)

Exploitation of innacurate pawn advance leading to the "classic freeing move" and the noose tightens. Elegant win. Ty for posting.

Great ending. On a semi related note, I feel as if I should learn the Sicilian on account of being 100% Sicilian in nature.
Also, i love the way you explain why the moves are made apposed to other commentors giving a quick reason that doesn't fully cover it like you.
