No doubt that she is an absolutely amazing musician, but actually this piece is one of her fall outs... But still I think she is incredible! Simply love her playing.
ok she's very talented, but too young for this piece, no emotions at all flows throug the music... and with her small hands she cant even play some parts.. i really dont get it
@BrunoCt86 She may be too young for this piece while she uploaded this. But guess what! She had her piano recital in National Performance Hall, Taipei, Taiwan in May 2011 (ps. She is from Taiwan), and will be going to have her recital in Carnegie Hall, NY in Dec. 2011!!! Go check out her channel
@lovepichio people want to see kids like rachel just because they are Talents, not for their musicality/interpretation of any piece.. have you read what i wrote?
Bashing her playing is really pointless here...she is a very young girl playing a very difficult piece. I wouldn't expect her to play it with the depth and emotion that is so essential in this piece, but I'm fairly impressed with her ability to negotiate all the difficult passages. As she grows and matures, we would expect her to polish this and add her life experience to this. That's what is missing, but don't bash a young girl for lacking maturity and depth.....she's not supposed to yet.
hei, sweet musician, i have to admit that your hand nerves are much better than others whose are also in your average age, when did you start to play ? what special food that your parent gave you when you were a baby ? he he I also notice you try to measure which notes have to play hard or soft, most are accurate !!!! and you are not bragging, too !! Superb !! You have a good character, too !!!
Amazing performance given her age. Perhaps we should not criticise her now but hear her again when she is 18. There were plenty of wrong notes, bur bravo anyway. IMHO, she should play pieces which she can play perfectly for You tube, not those which make her struggle. She is very musical and will probably be famous one day.
Awesome, Rachel...I've been following you for several years, always impressed, and hoping you find happiness, success, blessing in your music and life. I love watching you play........Bravo!
Rachel definitely plays very well, especially for her age, but i think the way how her parents (correct me if i'm wrong) present her daugther in the internet is just disgusting...all these ambitious parents who force their children into any activity which carries weight...im getting really angry when i come to watch something like that...poor children
I grew up poor and I've loved piano since I was 6. I wish my parents had the privilege of FORCING me to play the instrument.
I've met people like her. They are neither tortured nor abused. The one's who started playing later in life all wish their parents had given them a better start. Stop your dramatic whining.
Rachel is amazing. Does anyone know her last name, or where she's from? Would be interesting to track her musical career. She's adorable, incredibly talented, and delightful to listen to. I wish her success, blessing, joy, happiness......what a precious little angel indeed!
@Lpmgato1 Hi, I think her parents have remover the name of the city they live in as well as her last name.
However Rachel is from Taiwan.
Regardless of the negative comments posted on this or any of her many videos. Rachel has never been forced or abused. In fact she herself decided to learn this demanding Ballade #1 because she loves a challenge.
And few pieces of music are more challenging than this one. She loves piano and her true friends love her.
estas son de las pocas cosas por las que dejo de hacer lo que estoy haciendo, porque realmente valen la pena, porque además de ser una obra de dificil ejecución, su estatura apenas le da para alcanzar los pedales. Maravilla
Argerich starts playing beethoven concerto when she was 7 and mozart's at 8 and schumann's at 10. but what's her now? the world best pianist indeed! we should wish her all the best shouldnt we? rather than giving negative comments.
She appears to be enjoying what she is doing. Stop all the non-sense and save the judgmental comments. This is her. Just wait until later... You haven't seen anything yet.
I am so tired of hearing people say "I worry how this kid got here, how much time she spends practicing etc...." what is there to worry about? most children spend way too much time 'wasting time'. It is strange how people applaud young athletes but criticize young musicians. It is not wrong to want to succeed, and success is not going to come to anyone without hardwork. I say, great job Rachel, keep playing the piano, and spend as much time as you want practicing!
@yiyiku well, actually "wasting time" for a 10 years old child is to spend most of her time in things like this, she will never waste time playing with her friends, how can you say the opposite?.. playing any instrument at high levels requires heavy sacrifices and you cant ask at a sweet little girl like her to face all these sacrifices especially because she is too young to think with her head.. this is just my opinion and, anyway, the reason why so many people say she's too young for this...
@MrLocalitaItalia my mom plays the piano and she is a musician teacher. She learned it alone, she preferred to play the piano or read a book when she came home. My grandparents told her not to continue playing the piano because they were tired hearing the same notes. But my mom liked (and likes) to play it, then she continued. She tell me that she played 5 - 6 hours a day!! my grandparents were crazy!! my mom enjoyed to play the piano, then you can't that Rachel doesn't enjoy to play...
@yiyiku also, usually people applaud young athletes but criticize young musicians because the one who plays an instrument spends most of his time alone, practicing, inside his house for hours. it is a big difference...
she plays it wonderfull i am very impressed but i am also worry how she gets there, how many hours she have spend at the piano instead of playing with friends...
She has a great talent but even Chopin at her age played compositions that expression was not nessesary for example his two first Polonaises She has a talent but I would suggest that she plays compositions from the Classical period as they do not demand a lot of expression as the compositions from the romantic period. As an expierienced and profesional pianist who has many years of expierience I would say do not play Chopin at such young age.
profslump20078 You're a fucking asshole, and you are sooo envious of her. Assume that when she will be you're age, she will be playing anything she wants, and you... well, writing buulshit in the youtube
im sorry but this is played without emotions...this child is just a machine without heart and feelings. no matter how old she is, this has nothing to do with the playing. if you play such a piece you have to be prepared to be criticized and compared to other pianist who play the same piece. she wants to be a Wunderkind, but there is no musical talent in this girl. she practises a lot, many hours a day. a true wunderkind like kissin played that at the same age, and even better....so fuck the age
To w ogóle nie brzmi jak Szopenowska ballada...gdzie tu jakiekolwiek emocje? Jakieś pytanie, cokolwiek...choćby drobne uczucie, które można okazać dzięki muzyce... (?) Tak właśnie wygląda granie jak z nut...
why missing her childhood?? I don't get why learning classical piano pieces is always an equivalence of "missing one's childhood". She's not missing her childhood as long as she likes what she does. And when you see her play it's obviously the case
you got a point there, but I would somewhat get bored from "little pieces", if I were capable of playing such hard pieces like her. I can only presume of course, but if it is to her liking I would fully agree to her choice, but still, considering how mature this piece is... I think you need some experience some age that comes within. Therefore other "lighter" pieces could suit her.
@MrVladimirHorowitz Not really. If you don't ever play these you won't be ever able to play these. It's very important to play easier and harder pieces, because you will learn different things from both.
This girl is amazing. To be able to memorize and play this difficult piece at such a young age is mind-blowing to me. She only really makes mistakes on the most difficult parts. You people who complain about every little missed note need to go suck it.
BITCH..... Shes so fkn GOOD she plays for ages wit out notes. Must be a true panist; but at a very young age?... She so lucky to have talent at that age.
she is a very talented piano player,-but this piece is played bad-i cant understand teacher who allowed such a performance-perhaps in several years. she will play this piece very good.why not have a little respect for great music like this?
After a certain lever of proficiency, criticism is the primary means for improving one's musicianship. I am certain that she can take criticism. I am also certain that she can give You Tube criticism its due weight.
rurupinpin: sorry to sound ignorant, you said she may not understand the meaning of this Ballad. But where did Chopin describe what this piece mean? Any music historian here?
Perhaps what rurupinpin meant is that she sounds like she is doing exactly what the teacher told her to do. And that's it. No sparkles of inspiration, no musicality other than suggested by teacher.
wow...thats unbelievable....i would say that is too much for a child of that age...i mean good for her, i just hope that she isnt pressured to perform pieces like that
Bunch of idiots she is not even 10 years old, she plays nice for her age, so enjoy her level, encourage her, and stop dissing on her, thats not necessary
the more difficult and demanding works she plays, the more there'd be people here trashing her endeavors.
so i guess there's a huge problem with her which is that she CAN play this. I would suggest she make a video swearing that she'll lock herself in a room and not do anything for the rest of her life and THAT would REALLY satisfy those sophisticated people on youtube...because that CAT is the TRUE piano player on planet earth and no one should steal its thunder! How Dare You!!!
Well, I bare translate this comment, since it has already got three ponts down. "She'd too young... incredibly talented, but she has certainly not understood this ballad." And I do agree. A ballad, and this one in particular, is what came out of Chopin's life, which was a life spent away from his country, with little love, with deep contemplation. She does not convey these feeling because she hasn't experienced none of them yet, and I bet few people has.
If we are to name someone how really has given the wolrd the best rendering of this peice, that's arguably Vladimir Horowitz. The concetrs at Carnaby Hall were given when he was quite old. She's not to blame because she's too young though. Perhaps it is to blame who have made her study this enormouly difficult peice. I wonder if she ever listened it be played and decided she liked it.
Hailkayy is right, everyone should encourage her to keep playing because we all hope that such a technician would eventually produce something wanderful of her own. But those who say she's a great pianist are wrong, she's not a pianist yet, she's a technician. Please, listent to Horowitz rendering of this ballade and compare it to Rachel's.
yes yes i agree with you she isn't a pianist yet..of course she is very good but people should try to listen horowitz's execution or rubistein's two of the biggest pianist ever lived (my english isn't very good :) )
There is a Rachel's new rendition of this ballade, posted in January this year, that shows an improvement. As a lot of other people, I think she is a rmere genious, and like her interpretations even better than the best ones till now because of her passion, that makes music magnetic, and allows us to expect the best sound from her in the future.
i wish i had the skills and passion, but right now i dont deserve to play such a wonderful song. this little girls is playing keys in an specific order by comandment.
listen, i understand she has a great gift. this is incredible to play a piece like this at 10 years of age. the problem with a chopin ballade, is that theres so much more beyond the technique which people spend years studying. the notes are there but there's so much lacking, thats my problem with young talented pianists playing pieces like this. there's a time and a place for chopin ballades, even with her amazing technical ability. i couldnt enjoy the music but i enjoyed her talent
LOL Whould you say the same thing of Chopin playing technicaly demanding works at age 10? Because im shure he did. How do you know she has finished working on this ballade? Has she kept on practicing this ballade? Her dad probably just uploaded the vid so he could get some vews and comments. Your right. there is a level on works but mabe she is up to the challenge now.
Just if you can, enjoy the music and later on if you can play this ballad, then you have the right to judge her.
She's not ready right now. She'll play it but she won't understand it. I've played this in numerous recitals in south florida when I played classical back in the day
For all those who think she is not using much emotions..so what ?? Maybe she is just practicing...or she is not so emotional.. or she is 10 years old ??? C'mon.. you all jealous people,... She will eat Ballade No.1 for breakfast in 5-6 years...
I agree with you completely! But wouldn't this piece might ruin her life? I meat, she playing piece like this which is messing her emotions? OH nvm.....
What she exhibits here is great potential. As time goes on and her brilliance comes to full fruition, you will notice the full extent of her powers. Add this to having such a large repertoire at her age and you will agree with me that she is awsome indeed!!!
Thanks for seeing my point in giving advice and not actually trying to insult a fellow pianist. Yes, she's playing through it well in terms of correct notes and rhythm, but there are various factors that would enhance its performance.
when she gets older and perfects the song, and listens to many other people play it, i'm sure she'll get her own feel for the expression of it. i can only play the first page lol.
Bravo! You are a very outstanding young musician - with the drive and passion. I look forward to more! I am sure that you will be a supremely wonderful pianist someday! All the best to your musical endeavors!!
Thanks to youtube I no longer believe in child prodigies, only kids who started really young. There are two thousand 7 year olds on this site that can place Chopin's entire catalog fod god's sake.
But I think it's to early to play Chopin Ballades. Hands are small yet, so it's hard for her to play all passages correctly. And no emotions. She's simply playing notes :)
Nevertheless - she's genuis with the great future. don't stop playing :)
If you don't havr anything nice to say.... just don't say anything...at...all...
I played this piece, and let me tell you...it's difficult. She handled it very nicely for her age. She's not out there robbing convenience stores, or smoking pot. She is studying a very difficult instrument, and doing mighty well with it!!!
Have you noticed how Rachel plays pieces, presumably because she enjoys them, and then later on, when she improves, she replays them for us, as if to say, "Here's what I've learned."
I think she will show us how much she learns from this piece many times in the future.
So I'm not too bothered by her playing this piece as a 10 year old, as long as she enjoys playing it, because I'm sure she will eventually give us a truly excellent performance.
I totally agree with your opinion. I'm impressed by her ability to play this...as far as I'm concerned, she's playing it very well for someone her age. Technic-wise, she plays it better than I do after working on it (on and off) for 2 years! The rest will come for her in due time, I'm sure.
good speed ,but at end its poco ritardando and than accelerando -you did like all accelerando without poco ritardando.ANd more accents in the first 7 double octaves;)
your are talented girl more talented than me for sure, but you should realy think of playing a bit easyer pieces than chopin's ballades which consider the highest lvl of chopin.
but if you insist you have alot of work to do on the coda (lol cant imagine how you play it with your size of hands)
Unfortunately she does have the emotional depth of a twig... but thats because she's only 10. What she must realise to become a true musician is that notes is one thing... beauty is another.
This piece is beyond her by a couple of years and I mean that nicely... no ones doubting that she's talented... but to try and pull of Chopins Ballade No. 1 at 10 years of age is just painful... to the student trying to master it, and the teacher realising that she's got a long way to go.
i absolutely agree with you, she's definitely no0 horowitz and this is so beyond her that her teacher shouldn't have taught her that.....it's just too shallow...shame really
So what is she supposed to do just quit playing?? that is the most stupid response I have ever heard. Give her credit for even being able to play this at this age so cut her some slack. If you can't say anything nice just keep quiet.
No doubt that she is an absolutely amazing musician, but actually this piece is one of her fall outs... But still I think she is incredible! Simply love her playing.

rurupinpin: sorry to sound ignorant, you said she may not understand the meaning of this Ballad. But where did Chopin describe what this piece mean? Any music historian here?
junkmail75034 2 years ago
Perhaps what rurupinpin meant is that she sounds like she is doing exactly what the teacher told her to do. And that's it. No sparkles of inspiration, no musicality other than suggested by teacher.
lilpep4ever 2 years ago
That stool is too high for her. If it was a little lower she would play with ease and make this piece even more fantastic, hard though that would be.
MrSportyleman 2 years ago
wow...thats unbelievable....i would say that is too much for a child of that age...i mean good for her, i just hope that she isnt pressured to perform pieces like that
tenniskid004 2 years ago
This is too much!

Bunch of idiots she is not even 10 years old, she plays nice for her age, so enjoy her level, encourage her, and stop dissing on her, thats not necessary
hailkayy 2 years ago 28
the more difficult and demanding works she plays, the more there'd be people here trashing her endeavors.
so i guess there's a huge problem with her which is that she CAN play this. I would suggest she make a video swearing that she'll lock herself in a room and not do anything for the rest of her life and THAT would REALLY satisfy those sophisticated people on youtube...because that CAT is the TRUE piano player on planet earth and no one should steal its thunder! How Dare You!!!

@loveanncoulter Sad, people should enjoy her efforts and appreciate the fact that she is attempting things they could probably never do.

è troppo giovane...con un grande talento certo ma non ha capito questa ballata...
dottbd91 2 years ago
Well, I bare translate this comment, since it has already got three ponts down. "She'd too young... incredibly talented, but she has certainly not understood this ballad." And I do agree. A ballad, and this one in particular, is what came out of Chopin's life, which was a life spent away from his country, with little love, with deep contemplation. She does not convey these feeling because she hasn't experienced none of them yet, and I bet few people has.
koobixel 2 years ago 3
If we are to name someone how really has given the wolrd the best rendering of this peice, that's arguably Vladimir Horowitz. The concetrs at Carnaby Hall were given when he was quite old. She's not to blame because she's too young though. Perhaps it is to blame who have made her study this enormouly difficult peice. I wonder if she ever listened it be played and decided she liked it.
koobixel 2 years ago 4
Hailkayy is right, everyone should encourage her to keep playing because we all hope that such a technician would eventually produce something wanderful of her own. But those who say she's a great pianist are wrong, she's not a pianist yet, she's a technician. Please, listent to Horowitz rendering of this ballade and compare it to Rachel's.
koobixel 2 years ago
yes yes i agree with you she isn't a pianist yet..of course she is very good but people should try to listen horowitz's execution or rubistein's two of the biggest pianist ever lived (my english isn't very good :) )
dottbd91 2 years ago
There is a Rachel's new rendition of this ballade, posted in January this year, that shows an improvement. As a lot of other people, I think she is a rmere genious, and like her interpretations even better than the best ones till now because of her passion, that makes music magnetic, and allows us to expect the best sound from her in the future.

i wish i had the skills and passion, but right now i dont deserve to play such a wonderful song. this little girls is playing keys in an specific order by comandment.
SELG88 2 years ago
listen, i understand she has a great gift. this is incredible to play a piece like this at 10 years of age. the problem with a chopin ballade, is that theres so much more beyond the technique which people spend years studying. the notes are there but there's so much lacking, thats my problem with young talented pianists playing pieces like this. there's a time and a place for chopin ballades, even with her amazing technical ability. i couldnt enjoy the music but i enjoyed her talent
returnthisserve7 2 years ago
a girlsl at that age should not play that song simply because she sdoes not understand the feelings behind chopin's ballade 23
SELG88 2 years ago
yeah thanks for paraphrasing
returnthisserve7 2 years ago
LOL Whould you say the same thing of Chopin playing technicaly demanding works at age 10? Because im shure he did. How do you know she has finished working on this ballade? Has she kept on practicing this ballade? Her dad probably just uploaded the vid so he could get some vews and comments. Your right. there is a level on works but mabe she is up to the challenge now.
Just if you can, enjoy the music and later on if you can play this ballad, then you have the right to judge her.

Excellent performance Rachel!! How long do you practice everyday? Also how long does it take you to learn a big piece like this?
ChopinIsCool 3 years ago 2
What she exhibits here is great potential. As time goes on and her brilliance comes to full fruition, you will notice the full extent of her powers. Add this to having such a large repertoire at her age and you will agree with me that she is awsome indeed!!!

Thanks for seeing my point in giving advice and not actually trying to insult a fellow pianist. Yes, she's playing through it well in terms of correct notes and rhythm, but there are various factors that would enhance its performance.

Oh my God. I'm struggling with half this piece and she breezes through it like nothing. Sigh.

Not quite ready for this song yet. You've got most of the basic technicalities down, but your song lacks drive, passion, and a soul.
EndlessScion 3 years ago
when she gets older and perfects the song, and listens to many other people play it, i'm sure she'll get her own feel for the expression of it. i can only play the first page lol.

I don't expect that Rachel could play this :)
Nice.
But I think it's to early to play Chopin Ballades. Hands are small yet, so it's hard for her to play all passages correctly. And no emotions. She's simply playing notes :)
Nevertheless - she's genuis with the great future. don't stop playing :)
Good luck.

I played this piece, and let me tell you...it's difficult. She handled it very nicely for her age. She's not out there robbing convenience stores, or smoking pot. She is studying a very difficult instrument, and doing mighty well with it!!!
Let's be positive and uplifting, pleeeease!!!

SilentViolins 3 years ago 3
I totally agree with your opinion. I'm impressed by her ability to play this...as far as I'm concerned, she's playing it very well for someone her age. Technic-wise, she plays it better than I do after working on it (on and off) for 2 years! The rest will come for her in due time, I'm sure.

your are talented girl more talented than me for sure, but you should realy think of playing a bit easyer pieces than chopin's ballades which consider the highest lvl of chopin.
but if you insist you have alot of work to do on the coda (lol cant imagine how you play it with your size of hands)
zetumel 3 years ago 6
Unfortunately she does have the emotional depth of a twig... but thats because she's only 10. What she must realise to become a true musician is that notes is one thing... beauty is another.
This piece is beyond her by a couple of years and I mean that nicely... no ones doubting that she's talented... but to try and pull of Chopins Ballade No. 1 at 10 years of age is just painful... to the student trying to master it, and the teacher realising that she's got a long way to go.
reaperman2004 3 years ago 7
i absolutely agree with you, she's definitely no0 horowitz and this is so beyond her that her teacher shouldn't have taught her that.....it's just too shallow...shame really
pandaz1993himick 3 years ago
So what is she supposed to do just quit playing?? that is the most stupid response I have ever heard. Give her credit for even being able to play this at this age so cut her some slack. If you can't say anything nice just keep quiet.
