he asked her how many languages are spoken in India and she said there are plenty then he asked her how many languages you speak referring to "Indian Languages". When she is doing so great in all the fields why do we pick and criticize small points.
What Letterman meant was that, even though she could speak many languages , the fact that she didn't mention English, left Letterman astonished (he was joking here) since they were having a conversation in none of the languages she mentioned. Obviously, she thought that it was understood that she knew English, since she is speaking it, but Letterman took advantage of what it seemed unawareness to make this joke. Not big deal.
