like i said 4 months ago a very versatile amp, but it doesn't have enough gain for playing metal. i can tell you, if you try to play some pantera or avenged sevenfold it seriously misses a lot, and the latter doesn't even use that much of gain
I just picked up one of these amps. It's definetely an improvement over my Fender Mustang I amp ($100). Clean sounds are tremendously improved with the Roland cube over the Mustang. Also has an easier user interface and better sounding effects. I got it for $40 on craigslist, but they retail for about $200 new and $100-$150 used. I have only used it with my american telecaster and used mostly clean tones
I was going to try and make this amp into a multi effects pedal by running the headphone jack to a bigger amp, do you guys think this would be possible to do? I'm haven't been able to test this since I only have this amp right now
just bought this amp used... turns out, pluging a pod in the aux input gave me the best sound my pod ever had.... it doesnt color the sound of the pod at all.... plus, the jazz chorus sim of this amp is just perfect, amazing clean sound.... not to mention this is the loudest solid state 30w amp I've ever played in my life...amazing amp
I feel the best he sounded was when he was playing an old Gibson ES 175 and I think he was using a pair of Acoustic amps in stereo. I could be wrong but that's what it looked like from the seats at the Roxy in Hollywood.
@mpaz48mo buy a fender 600 or gretsch 5222 and crank it.if you know a little electronics you can mod it to champ tweed specs, replace the speaker and you will have a 95% clapton bedroom sound!
hi guys ... can u help me bout' something? i'm stuck between two amps.. The Fender Mustang II and Roland Cube 30? I play usually Iron Maiden and more crunchy stuff. but no new metal.. the old 80's... what do you recommend?
@NintendoSinceBirth1 I dont care 'bout that.. i already have a mic.. Shure Sm57 and I have Cubase 5 so I dont have a problem with that.. i just need help deciding which has better tone for more crunchy stuff. :) Thx anyway :)
my cube 30 roland its been my friend since 2003 ive never had any trouble with it .it is great for practice i remember back then i paid about 300 bucks for it ,this was the first amp i ve ever purchased by my own hands with hours of effort ,im going to get a half stack amp still debating between marshall or randall, but this amp the cube 30 its going to stay forever there.it is a eternal amp and you and yr friends pretty much have a great time
you're right about the amp, man. i have one of these and it's a very versatile one for beginning guitar players, the only thing i don't like about it is that it sometimes makes sounds like some parts are exploding mixed with a lot of fuzz or something
John, great overview of the amp. I know you hit on the Blues sound a bit, but can you, with your experience, help me out with the settings that would bring me close to Claptons sound? I realize there so much more involved, pickups, pedals..... but I've been tinkering and just can't seem to dial in to something close to his sound. Michael
@johnhguitar i play alot of metal, but still am interested in blues and play them quite alot, just not as much as metal, question is do you think i should get this amp, and how much is it ?
@mpaz48mo You should think about getting a fender champ 600... they are 5 watts tube and they have great tone. Clapton used fender champs to record some of his famous songs like layla. they are around 150 bucks but you wont regret it
I have this amp and am happy with it. Plenty of power for inside the house. I keep mine on about 3 out of 10. I made my own footswitch with a bit of wire, stereo plug (since there are 2 switches) and 2 doorbell buttons (cheap) screwed to a piece of wood. It looks ghetto but works fine and is way cheaper than the Roland switch. Rock on.
Hey there, I dont usually comment on videos but, man, I just have to tell you this. I already have bought that amp as my first amp and ran across your video today and I have to give it to you. Rolands are the perfect practice amps. They have good effects and junk built in so you dont have to spend time settin up a pedal board or wasting the precious tube life on ur tube amps.
motley0crue12 on the cube 30x their is a power squezer what it does is if u have the volume on high as it can go push the squezer it wont be that loud
hey guys, could anyone help... i recently bought the cube 80x... and sent it back straight away because it was stupidly loud.. im only playing in my house, not gigs, so would 30 still be too loud? i dont really want any lower than that, but im just worried that i will always have to keep it on volume 1 so i wont get the most out of the amp
@motley0crue12 if your just playing in ur house, I would recommend a 20x. A 30x is still pretty loud, but a 20x is good for playing in rooms and such.
I Just had a look at the Roland UK web site - the 30 has been superseded by the 30X and the 30 is showing as discontinued - so look out for the 30 as an end of line bargain - could be cheap.
I have one with the Dyna Amp setting built in. Dyna Amp provides you with a terrific tube amp sound. It's basically all the dirty tone you're ever going to need. I hardly use any of the other settings. The clean channel doesn't really take effects well, and sounds very sterile and shallow with OD/distortion pedals. Other than that, it's not a bad amplifier.
@vietcongfistalpha1 i tried a jackson kvx10 with this and a cube 30 and spider 15 there both the same but i would buy the cube 30 cuz it's lighter i can carry it to school
Can't decide between Cube 30 OR the Peavey Vypyr 30 ? I love the clean dreamy STRAT sound, would like a decent overdrive (crunch) also. I know not to ask for too much from these small amps. I love the CUBE, but i think the Peavey has a little bigger or open sound. Don't know whether to trust those digital knobs on the Vypyr ! I always thought peavey was excellent quality, but talk of it freezing scares me ! Any advice would 'GREATLY' appreciated.....cheers from Australia !
@petrochemicals4u Roland Cube all the way. I always go in a jam bar and they hand you a Roland cube 30 to jam, im always impress buy it it sounds very good and playing with the band you dont get bury at all. I own 3 different amp Vox Ac15 cc1x, line6 spyder15, marshall valvestate 100w, im going to sell the lineshit and marshall to get a Roland cube for everyday / practice amp (Vox ac15 is such a magnificent amp wont sell it ever). Roland have a very nice distortion ...
@UndeadProjekt actually very easy i have now micro cube (3w) and that is loud enough to hear over drums..... we have that amp on our school (30w) it play roo much behind the drums..
@UndeadProjekt well it is a small amp, so definitely it was made for one person in a room to jam... u wanna play over drums, get a head amp...it will CRACK windows! EPICNESS
@UndeadProjekt Probably dude i had a crate 30 watt solid state and it went over a little drum set at around halfway on the volume control!! although i doubt your still wondering
Hi thx for this review very useful and I'm gonna buy that amp (have also a ES335), but what kind of chord do you play at 4:27 ? --> rockabilly end chord sounds nice ..
I'm just a beginner, but I like your website and reviews. I bought the Cube 30X and I use the guitar from my son (a Dean hardtail), but I would like to buy a Ibanez Artcore AS73 (or AS93, AS103) About this vid. In the end let us hear a blues sound. On the Lead channel you choose the black panel add some reverb and adjust the volume, but you turn the volumeknob of the clean channnel. But hasn't the lead channel his own volumeknob? And you play everything with the Gain knob on 10?
Good question. It's a good idea to use an angled or L jack to avoid damaging the guitar because the input jack is on the face of these 335s. If you bump into something it can crack the wood. Thanks
Hello, you know the vox vt 30? What are the differences between them? I realized at the roland has a nicer clean sound, but wanted an opinion from someone who had already played in both cubes. roland cube 30 or 30 vox vt? Thank you.
I have a micro cube, and on that amp there is a gain for the JC clean channel as well as a volume and as you turn the gain up it has a mild warm distortion right at the highest gain. I was just wondering- with no gain for the clean channel on this amp, does the same thing happen if you put all the tone controls up?
Great Review! The cube 30 is fantastic and was my first amplifier back in 2001 and I still use it every day for practicing. Its very reliable and sounds far better than the vox or line 6 equivalent. If you play metal you need to be delicate with the bass on the e.q else you get the bwooomb hum sound from the speaker but apart from that its amazing!
I've got a cube 30 and its a good practice amp and had a 60. No way are they a giging amp so don't buy into that.
Demo's always sound better than real life situations. This demo was done in a very live room with natural echo or was mic'd.Hear the echo in his speech? The EQ controls are not that good either so it won't sound good in every room. The clean channel lacks compression that a good tube amp has. Play the amp before you buy. if it sounds like a blanket is over it, don't buy it
Man, I love my little Roland Cube. Just picked one up today on Craigslist for $25!! No more annoying the neighbors late at night with the big amps. Best 25 I've ever spent on musical toys..
@comedybenj hell yes, but if you have extra to spend go for the higher numbers you have more stuff to mess around with the sound effects sounds better and better depending on how high the number is; for example the cube 80 is the highest ,i think
I'll probably buy this amp after this great review! I have a spider III 15w whish sounds quite bad and I want this amp! Also you know on the guitar there are different tone and volume knobs, mine has 1 tone, 1 volume and 1 stick.... anyway what should I set my knobs at to get a good metallica sound? Thanks!
I've been looking to try one of these Cubes for a while now. I've had a JC-120 for 20 years now and am very happy with it. Its hard to beat the clean sounds from Roland amps.
John, your tone is awesome and your u-t videos are wonderful, keep up the video's and continuing the reviews....very inspiring......I want to buy your sg so let me know when that can happen.....mom bought me the sg special in 69 and i'm still missing my standard....i'll keep watching>>>>> birthday brother from Pa....hogr2

@Muzikman127 I'm not sure.......

EXCELLENT video,man!!!!10/10* see you my "Roland"video!!! *_*

a little update, The clean channel with pedals, comp, ts ,delay and boss verb works pretty good.
its od channel isn't that great, very muffed sounding. mic'd and in a bright sounding room, you might get what you hear above.
but hey! for a buck99.00, it ain't bad and makes a good practice amp for low volume /2am jaming.

hey can you tell me the exact gain and tone i should have on the classic stack to sound as 70s as possible, like kiss, acdc...etc

nickfromdtown1992 1 year ago
Great Review! The cube 30 is fantastic and was my first amplifier back in 2001 and I still use it every day for practicing. Its very reliable and sounds far better than the vox or line 6 equivalent. If you play metal you need to be delicate with the bass on the e.q else you get the bwooomb hum sound from the speaker but apart from that its amazing!
elmo997 1 year ago 2
I've got a cube 30 and its a good practice amp and had a 60. No way are they a giging amp so don't buy into that.
Demo's always sound better than real life situations. This demo was done in a very live room with natural echo or was mic'd.Hear the echo in his speech? The EQ controls are not that good either so it won't sound good in every room. The clean channel lacks compression that a good tube amp has. Play the amp before you buy. if it sounds like a blanket is over it, don't buy it

Was that pun intended?
Krukkie 1 year ago
@bluesmann8 The Cube is a good live amp, if you use the "Line Out" on the back of the it.

Man, I love my little Roland Cube. Just picked one up today on Craigslist for $25!! No more annoying the neighbors late at night with the big amps. Best 25 I've ever spent on musical toys..

@rovibe lucky bastard. The cheapest I found was $75 and it was gone an hour after it went up

@rovibe is it good for metal
comedybenj 1 year ago
@comedybenj hell yes, but if you have extra to spend go for the higher numbers you have more stuff to mess around with the sound effects sounds better and better depending on how high the number is; for example the cube 80 is the highest ,i think

I've been using this for 5 years now, great little amp, perfect for bedroom practicing!
Compact enough but you still get a LOT of different sounds out of it without any hassle. Great amp for beginners and even average-good players.
One thing I don't like is the steep volume transition on the lead channel: not much space between "silent" and "just a bit too loud".
Good review John

Also you know on the guitar there are different tone and volume knobs, mine has 1 tone, 1 volume and 1 stick.... anyway what should I set my knobs at to get a good metallica sound? Thanks!

I've been looking to try one of these Cubes for a while now. I've had a JC-120 for 20 years now and am very happy with it. Its hard to beat the clean sounds from Roland amps.
