here's 40k on the cheque for those who'll volunteers to go, to'list and fight the foe today, over the gulf and far away, over the gulf and over the sand, through Iraq, Pakistan, and Chad, James C. commands and we obey, over the gulf and far away..
Why are all these Sharpe videos plastered with comments about nationalism, racism and whatever? Just bored lonely losers with nothing to do but post remarks that'll get them some attention I imagine.
@MpsAREthieves I don't think the series got any accolades as a whole, although it did bring Sean Bean into the public eye.
Sean Bean is a brilliant actor, utterly convincing in every episode. Did he receive any accolades for playing Sharpe does anybody know? like an award or somthing?
Just as a point of interest; O'er the Hills was the march of the 95th of Foot, The Derbyshire Regiment. Guess which county John Tams has the privilege of calling home. (Clue: It begins with D and has recently been mentioned.)
The 95th was in 1881 merged with the 45th of Foot, the Nottinghamshire Regiment, to form The Sherwood Foresters. In 1970, the Foresters were merged with the Worcestershire Regiment to form the Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters Regiment, known as the "Woofers".
If you're looking for any of the music from Sharpe then look up John Tams. He released an album when Sharpe was on tv the first time round with this song and more. Amazing voice.
While there is very little of beauty to be found in the bloody conflict we call war, the one beautiful thing might be the songs composed and sung round campfires at night by men of valor heart sick for home and knowing too well that they may never see it again. Thanks for posting this beautiful version of this beautiful song.
@fabfaruk Yes I do agree but unfortunately this little song was never a song sung during the peninsular war. This is a song from a play by George Farquhar which was written during the 17th century. The song is slightly different may I add
Excellent this should be released as a track the complete over the hills song and marketed for action for heros the words mean as much then as today for our servicemen and women
@kipperdo1 Sorry kipperdo1......but your American version of this old English song just isn't the same, doesn't have nearly the same ring to it mate, ruins it infact :( lol
@kipperdo1 Sorry Kipperdo1, but your americanised rendition of this song just isn't quite the same. Doesn't sound nearly as good as the English original :(
@kipperdo1 I'm afraid the right to recite that song was sacrificed at your countries decision to rebel and with it 1500 years History and an Empire that spanned the world.
@kipperdo1 Oh dear no, we cant have that, Benghazi was saved by the French :O Whats more, our boys probably whistled this tune when they were busy kicking Americas arse and burning down the whitehouse back in 1812, so please no silly yankee nonsense on here.
@kipperdo1 You know, I am glad Bin Laden is dead, but you REALLY messed up this song. I do not know why so many people gave you thumbs up. I kindly ask you to remove your comment, as MANY people dislike it. You have surely ruined this song, and made it almost pointless. There is no room for Non-Respectful Americans, or, "Yanks" on this video. Thank you.
My GGG-Grandfather served in a regiment of foot in Portugal and Spain, and France too. He fought at Badajoz, Vitoria, the Pyrenees, the Nive, Nivelle, Orthez and Toulouse. Then he was sent to Canada before being rushed back to France where he just missed Waterloo. I never knew him. The family was very proud of him and he was buried in the best of places. Never forgotten, "for those who volunteer to come, over the hills and far away". He earned £7 12 shillings for volunteering, not 40 shillings
@Ksgamer103 He's worse than racist. Read his profile. He supports murders and terrorists. He has a big long speech on their morning the deaths of a bunch of thugs who got what was coming to them.
@stupidintellect90 technically George the 3rd was the king of England, but his son (George the 4th) reigned as Regient due to the 3rd's insanity. @flamehands21 That's because Sean Bean played Richard Sharpe in this series and then went on to play Boromir in the first part of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy (The Fellowship Of The Ring). But then that said, Sean has had a rather varied career in which he's played many rough and raw fighting men on both the big and the small screens - and solely because he is so hard that he's rumoured (on 4chan) to be the bastard son of Chuck Norris and the Grim Reaper! :-E Lolz
@ajb7876 u eva heard that chuck's always on top when shafting bitches purely 'cushe's so bad-ass that he never fucks up?! it'd be the same for sharpe, except he was the origional british model for the kumasara!
@yorkie412 lol @napster :) but unfortunately there isn't that version anywhere in the net, as much as i know. As you can see, i had to patch it together from the end scenes of all the movies, the shorter version is on Sharpe's soundtrack.
@yorkie412 you wont find it, i brought the cassette off the bbc when shap first on our tv sets then my car cassette player eat it, iv been looking ever since , iv looked on amazon ect , i brought it as i was in the light infantry for a spell, all the best

@yorkie412 google Youtube Mp3 Converter and there are some sites that allow you to copy and past the share link and proceed downloading the video into pure audio format only for your enjoyment.
Over the hills and far away was written in the 18th Centry. The words are as true now as they were then. Soldiers are always sent off to war and basically forgttenabout. Not now however, as we are all behind our guys especially in that Hellhole Afganhistan. We support you all wherever you are and thank you for what you do for all of us. May God look after you all.

@Badboyalexx What Unit? I would like to hoist a pint to them. I was in Baghdad 2003-2004/2009-2010, for 2 1/2 years Baghdad I retired with 24 years (too blown up to stay) U.S.ARMY
fair one but did u no why the bricks at the bottom of the white house is black???? because it was the rifles that raided and burnt it down
also the rifles from dukes of cornwall (32/46th rifles slaughtered 300 americans and lost 3 blokes that why the light infantry had the red in the cap badge to show the americains it was us
have you noticed while the music is playing at the end of every episode sean bean stops and looks back in a kinda reflective manner...he does it nearly every time lol
If I recall watching a program on the Sharpe series it was a tribute to the men that lost their lifes in that episode, Sharpe looks back in respect, others say he looks in the direction of Great Britain with the lyrics "King George and we obey over the hills and far away", both are nice suggestions, but I think the first one is the true one.
@kiely456 I heard thar in a rare interview Sean Bean admitted he ejaculated at he end of every episode. If you carefully at his face you can see when it happens!
@kiely456 lol, true.. Maybe it's part of a deeper meaning. He looks back and that symbolises him leaving the past behind and moving forward? I don't know, haven't seen these episodes before :) I like the song!
not surprising, Dan Abbnett aludes to this song in one of his Gaunt's Ghosts stories "Necropolis" although the song "Over the Hills" is refered to as "Over the Stars". Probablely uses the same melody with suitablely altered lyrics to reflect the Warhammer 40K universe.
If you turn the audio way up when the Voltaire quote shows up on the screen you'll hear Sean Bean recite some lines of the song. On the official Sharpe TV Soundtrack you'll hear him also say it in the song.
Uh, ViejoCabo, you may want to do some fact-checking. Bernard Cornwell is alive and well and still writing, although I think he's stopped writing the Sharpe series (he kind of ran out of wars and battles in which to insert Sharpe).
The character Tongue disappears from the lineup after "Sharpe's Eagle" with no explanation. Perkins was bayonetted in the back by an Irish deserter who was killed by Patrick Harper. Harris and Hagman were both killed at Waterloo after a suicidal breakout from a fort ordered by The Prince of Orange. He was then shot by sharpe on the battlefield.
The young rifleman was hanged for stealing a chicken by Provosts (Military Police).
Cooper (Michael Mears) was in the story from the very start in the books and the films. He was in the army rather than go to jail for being a thief and pickpocket. He mysteriously drops off the cast list after Sharpes Gold.
Another one of Sharpes boys who appeared in several episodes was Rifleman Richard Moore played by.... Richard Moore. He is in episodes prior to Waterloo. Has a great pair of lambchop sideburns. He was also part of the production team. He is a weapons and pyrotechnics expert. To see a photo of him search under "Sharpe's Peril" on the internet.
I met the bloke who plays Harris at the festival of history last year down in Kelmarsh hall and I asked about Tongue. Apparently the actor got an offer he thought was better and left the show, bet he's kicking himself now!
here's 40k on the cheque for those who'll volunteers to go, to'list and fight the foe today, over the gulf and far away, over the gulf and over the sand, through Iraq, Pakistan, and Chad, James C. commands and we obey, over the gulf and far away..

I don't know, haven't seen these episodes before :) I like the song!

why do I think of Gaunts Ghosts when I hear this song?
Cypherfall 2 years ago 8
Author of Gaunt's Ghosts based the stories on the Sharpe's Rifles book series.
Lepper36 2 years ago
not surprising, Dan Abbnett aludes to this song in one of his Gaunt's Ghosts stories "Necropolis" although the song "Over the Hills" is refered to as "Over the Stars". Probablely uses the same melody with suitablely altered lyrics to reflect the Warhammer 40K universe.

also in the Ciaphas Cain novels Cain makes a reference to an old guard song "the Emperor points and we obey, through the warp and far away"

If you turn the audio way up when the Voltaire quote shows up on the screen you'll hear Sean Bean recite some lines of the song. On the official Sharpe TV Soundtrack you'll hear him also say it in the song.

strangrly i can actually imagine sharpe cleaving a nazi in twain
filthmonger171 2 years ago
Mousme, you´re right, Cornwell is still alive, so we must compulse him to write "Sharpe against the nazis" or "Sharpe and the crazy taliban"
ViejoCabo 2 years ago
Actually... they have a Sharpe and the Crazy Iraqi's, Bravo Two Zero.
Still waiting on the Nazi one though.

Cornwell aint dead he was on the history channel you fool..they would have said anyway! a living legend that man.
StueyLestrange 2 years ago
Indeed, very strange if it were true how all the Uhtred books keep on getting written.
Necromancy maybe?
Unwardil 2 years ago
Thanks for posting this!
Uh, ViejoCabo, you may want to do some fact-checking. Bernard Cornwell is alive and well and still writing, although I think he's stopped writing the Sharpe series (he kind of ran out of wars and battles in which to insert Sharpe).
Mousme79 2 years ago
He's not dead!

The young rifleman was hanged for stealing a chicken by Provosts (Military Police).

thanks but what bout Cooper?
lbaynes88 2 years ago
Cooper (Michael Mears) was in the story from the very start in the books and the films. He was in the army rather than go to jail for being a thief and pickpocket. He mysteriously drops off the cast list after Sharpes Gold.

How could anyone "thumb down" a quote from the episode? Whoever did it isn't a fan of Sharpe!

haha I remember laughing at that line. great series.

FYI, Rifleman Isaiah Tongue bites the big one in Sharpe's Gold (the book).

I met the bloke who plays Harris at the festival of history last year down in Kelmarsh hall and I asked about Tongue. Apparently the actor got an offer he thought was better and left the show, bet he's kicking himself now!
