  • here's 40k on the cheque for those who'll volunteers to go, to'list and fight the foe today, over the gulf and far away, over the gulf and over the sand, through Iraq, Pakistan, and Chad, James C. commands and we obey, over the gulf and far away..

  • I wanted to go over the hills but I took a bullet to the knee...

  • The 12 who disliked this video never got over the hills!

  • Why are all these Sharpe videos plastered with comments about nationalism, racism and whatever? Just bored lonely losers with nothing to do but post remarks that'll get them some attention I imagine.

@MpsAREthieves I don't think the series got any accolades as a whole, although it did bring Sean Bean into the public eye.

  • the 12 haters must be french lol

  • Sean Bean is a brilliant actor, utterly convincing in every episode. Did he receive any accolades for playing Sharpe does anybody know? like an award or somthing?

  • I just ordered Sharpes Revenge on dvd!!! i cant wait to get this series!!

  • For the record, I'm Irish. And Sharpe's STILL an excellent series.

  • Just as a point of interest; O'er the Hills was the march of the 95th of Foot, The Derbyshire Regiment. Guess which county John Tams has the privilege of calling home. (Clue: It begins with D and has recently been mentioned.)

The 95th was in 1881 merged with the 45th of Foot, the Nottinghamshire Regiment, to form The Sherwood Foresters. In 1970, the Foresters were merged with the Worcestershire Regiment to form the Worcestershire & Sherwood Foresters Regiment, known as the "Woofers".

  • @ambulanceamateur Ah but this was 95th RIFLES, Which was born in 1801 as experimentory core of Riflemen, and went to be the Rifle brigade in 1816!

  • Woohoo I met Harris today!!!! Good fella signed picture and everything

  • I heartily recommend the CD soundtrack.

  • SWIFT AND BOLD

  • Oh and Daniel Hagman is John Tams (Jon?) Harris is the reader

  • If you're looking for any of the music from Sharpe then look up John Tams. He released an album when Sharpe was on tv the first time round with this song and more. Amazing voice.

  • My mum and I squealed like schoolgirls when Sean Bean as Boromir (Lord of the Rings) said "still SHARP."

    We're like "HE'S STILL SHARPE!!"

  • I am no fan of songs praising idiot monarchies.....but this song is amazing....folk music at its finest....created by suffering

  • While there is very little of beauty to be found in the bloody conflict we call war, the one beautiful thing might be the songs composed and sung round campfires at night by men of valor heart sick for home and knowing too well that they may never see it again. Thanks for posting this beautiful version of this beautiful song.

  • @fabfaruk Yes I do agree but unfortunately this little song was never a song sung during the peninsular war. This is a song from a play by George Farquhar which was written during the 17th century. The song is slightly different may I add

  • Should replay these on ITV for the younger generation to watch and for others who may not of seen Sharpe.

  • @MpsAREthieves they do play them on the telly once in a while & on ITV sometimes, so some of us have seen them.

  • Excellent this should be released as a track the complete over the hills song and marketed for action for heros the words mean as much then as today for our servicemen and women

  • where youve put ? its not hagman its Dan, hagman is the guy who likes books

  • General Petraus scratched his bum,

He said Bin Laden you,ve had your fun,

The Navy seals have won the day ,

Over the hills and far away.

Oe'r the hills and Oe'r the main,

    through Bengazi, Baghdad and Tehran,

Our president commands and we'll obey,

Over the hills and far away.

  • @kipperdo1 TWAT

  • @kipperdo1 there is no room for yanks on this >:P

  • @kipperdo1 yeh for the same zionist banking interests as sharpe was fighting, how times change, NOT

  • @evilmeerkat007 times certainly do change, then morons made anti semitic remarks and few heared now many can read them on YouTube!!

  • @AbuAvital ah excellent, the old anti semite card.

  • @kipperdo1 so normal American thing to do, take a British thing and fuck it right up lol

  • @TheMagicalwill And how typically English... no sense of humor, no sense of shared sacrifice, just what's in it fir me

  • @fishnuget Scottish actually retard, but yes I do well for myself

  • @kipperdo1 super lame!

  • @kipperdo1 Bengazi? wtf that was the rebels not the US

  • @kipperdo1 Sorry kipperdo1......but your American version of this old English song just isn't the same, doesn't have nearly the same ring to it mate, ruins it infact :( lol

  • @kipperdo1 Sorry Kipperdo1, but your americanised rendition of this song just isn't quite the same. Doesn't sound nearly as good as the English original :(

  • @kipperdo1 I'm afraid the right to recite that song was sacrificed at your countries decision to rebel and with it 1500 years History and an Empire that spanned the world.

  • @kipperdo1 You know, I am glad Bin Laden is dead, but you REALLY messed up this song. I do not know why so many people gave you thumbs up. I kindly ask you to remove your comment, as MANY people dislike it. You have surely ruined this song, and made it almost pointless. There is no room for Non-Respectful Americans, or, "Yanks" on this video. Thank you.

  • 11 people are retarded.

  • Can I buy this on iTunes

  • a great tv show and song and finding the 1796 heavy saber is the hardest thing to find i would has a better time finding a honest politician

  • My GGG-Grandfather served in a regiment of foot in Portugal and Spain, and France too. He fought at Badajoz, Vitoria, the Pyrenees, the Nive, Nivelle, Orthez and Toulouse. Then he was sent to Canada before being rushed back to France where he just missed Waterloo. I never knew him. The family was very proud of him and he was buried in the best of places. Never forgotten, "for those who volunteer to come, over the hills and far away". He earned £7 12 shillings for volunteering, not 40 shillings

  • @OttosHere he did earn 40 shilings to volunteer, but then the army deducted most of it away to pay for his food, kit, equipment, etc.

  • @OttosHere I have relatives who similarly served in the Grand Armee'. From what I gather, they were paid even less.

  • Commendable efheoort biorne of verit-a-bhiell luhph.

  • is this series shown in usa??

  • I remember when i was ten years old and not being able to wait to get to my nans to watch her sharpe boxset 7 years later and i still love it ! :)

  • @kiely456 I was just thinking that while watching it, then I flicked down and read your comment which made me laugh so hard.

  • good man to patch it together. like to hear it as if it were from the show

  • he does the lookback in every episode. its what its all about :P

  • South, ur racist

  • @Ksgamer103 He's worse than racist. Read his profile. He supports murders and terrorists. He has a big long speech on their morning the deaths of a bunch of thugs who got what was coming to them.

  • everyone is into rock/ modern music or rap. I hate that stuff, this is great!

  • 11 people have no taste for music!

  • kings and tyrents come and go

i'll stand adjudged by what i know.

    a sodiers life i'll ne'er gainsay

over the hills and far away.

    thats my favorite one.

  • love this have the soundtract at home

  • sharpe english bastard

  • @SouthDownIPLO

    Fuck you,

I`m English and proud to be so. You dont like us?

Like i give a shit what you think.

  • @ajb7876 Who cares what some Fenian toerag thinks. Just ignore him.

  • @SouthDownIPLO Wrong.

    Sharpe-Arse kicking British bastard.

  • @OfficialFearClan but never defeated....

  • hij is zo lekkerrrrrrr

  • @haarbal72 ik weeet het :)

  • which king george reigned through that era?

  • @stupidintellect90 technically George the 3rd was the king of England, but his son (George the 4th) reigned as Regient due to the 3rd's insanity. All royal decrees were made by G the 3rd "In the name of His Royal Majesty, George", and thus that particular period of British history is known as the Regiency period (as we had a Royal Prince Regient reigning in the stead of the King)!

  • @Tarantio1983 sorry, typo made it into that post! where it says "All royal decrees were made by G the 3rd "In the name of His Royal Majesty, George" ..." - it should say "All royal decrees were made by G the 4th "In the name of His Royal Majesty, George" ..." - if that makes any sense?! sorry, i gotta perfect my proof-readin skills!

  • looks like boromir from lord of the rings

  • @flamehands21 That's because Sean Bean played Richard Sharpe in this series and then went on to play Boromir in the first part of the Lord Of The Rings trilogy (The Fellowship Of The Ring). But then that said, Sean has had a rather varied career in which he's played many rough and raw fighting men on both the big and the small screens - and solely because he is so hard that he's rumoured (on 4chan) to be the bastard son of Chuck Norris and the Grim Reaper! :-E Lolz

  • @Tarantio1983 You know that when Chuck Norris does push-ups he`s actually pushing the Earth down.

  • @ajb7876 u eva heard that chuck's always on top when shafting bitches purely 'cushe's so bad-ass that he never fucks up?! it'd be the same for sharpe, except he was the origional british model for the kumasara!

  • @flamehands21 yeah it's the same actor Sean Bean.

  • Try looking on Limewire and searching Joh nTams. I found it on there. Full version of the song.

  • im trying to find this song to download, cant find it thru the regular sources, (am I allowed to mention napster?) help please?

  • @yorkie412 lol @napster :) but unfortunately there isn't that version anywhere in the net, as much as i know. As you can see, i had to patch it together from the end scenes of all the movies, the shorter version is on Sharpe's soundtrack.

  • @kollonkuri I have a copy somewhere. It's on one of John's Singles:

Over The Hills And Far Away - John Tams & Chums - Virgin BTCE 81

  • I soooooo wish they would make more sharpes. I am sure that Sean Bean and Dargh 'O' Malley would be happy to do so.

  • this is such a beautiful song

  • so beauiful.. all men of arms.. of all nations must pay tribute.. ah USMC does so now.. i love it.. thank ye

  • this is well deep....but I like it.

  • I have to say, hearing Hagmans voice again at the end of 'Sharpe's Challange' after he had already died at Waterloo gave me chills, lol;

    There's something both inspiring and sad about this song;

    It really is a beauty!

  • @MidnighWolf

his death was a bit of a cop out though. They could have made it a bit more cinematic. He just sort of... died...

  • Sharpe: every woman wants him, every man wants to be him.

  • Does anyone know the name of the longhaired rifleman who sings often in the series?

  • @TofoeBob

    john tams

  • @welshbean3 and @Nerd1138

    thanx!

  • @TofoeBob Its Daniel Hagman, played by John Tams.

  • Nothing beats Sharpe, have grown up singing this song! Sharpe, Sharpe, Sharpe, Sharpe, Sharpe!

  • Over the hills and far away was written in the 18th Centry. The words are as true now as they were then. Soldiers are always sent off to war and basically forgttenabout. Not now however, as we are all behind our guys especially in that Hellhole Afganhistan. We support you all wherever you are and thank you for what you do for all of us. May God look after you all.

  • Over the hills man.

  • love it John, excellent!

  • We play this track out in Afghan, gets the boys ready to fight and also feel like if you die, you die like a true hero

  • @Badboyalexx If you are putting your life on the line for this country you are already a true hero, Badboy. My children and grandchildren will sleep safe tonight because of you and your brothers and sisters in arms. You have my deepest respect.

    Vietnam vet. 70-71

    Semper Fi

  • @Badboyalexx A year since I wrote this, we lost 13 boys out there 27 injured within 365 days......To our fallen brothers, you will not be forgotten you just simply wont..........

  • @Badboyalexx What Unit? I would like to hoist a pint to them. I was in Baghdad 2003-2004/2009-2010, for 2 1/2 years Baghdad I retired with 24 years (too blown up to stay) U.S.ARMY

You are right they will not be forgotten.

  • @Badboyalexx

fair one but did u no why the bricks at the bottom of the white house is black???? because it was the rifles that raided and burnt it down

also the rifles from dukes of cornwall (32/46th rifles slaughtered 300 americans and lost 3 blokes that why the light infantry had the red in the cap badge to show the americains it was us

(ps feel the same bud same in the rifles today

  • are u sure the title of this song rely is "over the hills and far away" because i cnat find it anywere please help

  • @vegitibles

On the CD John Tams - Definitive Collection it is listed "Spanish Bride"

  • My Dad has the full set o.o;;

  • @WillEnergy01 My father too O.o

and I watch it with him and annotate it in a sarcastic way...XDD

because sometimes the story is simple... but I have to admit that Sean Bean really looks good and not everytime the story is such simple....

Also sharpe the classic cool good guy catches them all (or kill them).

  • Does anyone know if I can get this song on iTunes?

  • @IceisLife use zamzar

  • Reminds me of my old dog best friend i have ever knew in animal matters

  • this series was shot in the early 90s to late 90s

  • @chieftains94

"Sharpe's Challenge" and "Sharpe's Peril" were made in 2006 @ 2008 respectively, and I believe plans are afoot for more.

  • @neohip

    @ meens at not and

  • Comment removed

  • Damn, he looks young in some of these. How old is the series?

  • This is one of the best series ever made, thank you so much for posting it!

  • have you noticed while the music is playing at the end of every episode sean bean stops and looks back in a kinda reflective manner...he does it nearly every time lol

  • Yeah I was wondering about htat myself actually. Seems to be a habit of his.

  • If I recall watching a program on the Sharpe series it was a tribute to the men that lost their lifes in that episode, Sharpe looks back in respect, others say he looks in the direction of Great Britain with the lyrics "King George and we obey over the hills and far away", both are nice suggestions, but I think the first one is the true one.

  • @kiely456 i guess its like at kinda sharpe's trademark lol

  • @kiely456

    Isn't it awesome!!?

  • @kiely456 not in Sharpe's Mission he doesn't

  • @Trek001 i said nearly every time lol

  • @kiely456 is that because he does it for a rest half way up the hill without the others noticing

  • @kiely456 I heard thar in a rare interview Sean Bean admitted he ejaculated at he end of every episode. If you carefully at his face you can see when it happens!

  • @kiely456 i know it's almost as if he wonders "why hell did i sighn up for this?".

  • @kiely456 .Remembering and mourning the men he lost.

  • Comment removed

  • @kiely456 Well he has usually killed a lot of people, he at least gives them a second or two's thought :)

  • @kiely456 he's probably wondering how Hagman is singing behind him and yet has already gone ahead lol

  • @kiely456 hes looking back at the steadly growing mound of dead frenchmen!

  • @kiely456 lol, true.. Maybe it's part of a deeper meaning. He looks back and that symbolises him leaving the past behind and moving forward? I don't know, haven't seen these episodes before :) I like the song!

  • gr8 song

  • sharpe kicks arse

  • @filthmonger171 The original Horatio Caine!!! CSI just copied Sharpe

  • why do I think of Gaunts Ghosts when I hear this song?

  • Author of Gaunt's Ghosts based the stories on the Sharpe's Rifles book series.

  • not surprising, Dan Abbnett aludes to this song in one of his Gaunt's Ghosts stories "Necropolis" although the song "Over the Hills" is refered to as "Over the Stars". Probablely uses the same melody with suitablely altered lyrics to reflect the Warhammer 40K universe.

  • also in the Ciaphas Cain novels Cain makes a reference to an old guard song "the Emperor points and we obey, through the warp and far away"

  • Read my lips = New World Order better carry a well built firearm.

  • If you turn the audio way up when the Voltaire quote shows up on the screen you'll hear Sean Bean recite some lines of the song. On the official Sharpe TV Soundtrack you'll hear him also say it in the song.

  • o My God Sean in this film is too great, and his voice in the end...wonderful!!!...it's a pity that these films didn't arrive in italy... =(

  • strangrly i can actually imagine sharpe cleaving a nazi in twain

  • Mousme, you´re right, Cornwell is still alive, so we must compulse him to write "Sharpe against the nazis" or "Sharpe and the crazy taliban"

  • Actually... they have a Sharpe and the Crazy Iraqi's, Bravo Two Zero.

Still waiting on the Nazi one though.

  • Cornwell aint dead he was on the history channel you fool..they would have said anyway! a living legend that man.

  • Indeed, very strange if it were true how all the Uhtred books keep on getting written.

    Necromancy maybe?

  • Thanks for posting this!

Uh, ViejoCabo, you may want to do some fact-checking. Bernard Cornwell is alive and well and still writing, although I think he's stopped writing the Sharpe series (he kind of ran out of wars and battles in which to insert Sharpe).

  • He's not dead!

  • eltonforlife I´m affraid that Cornwell, the author of Sharpe´s books, is dead

  • ummmmmm no hes not.

  • are they going to make more sharpe episodes?

  • A cracking tune. Absolutely fantastic. From an Ulsterman who has experieced the Royal Ulster Rifles Band, united we stand....

  • Thanks for adding the words. What's better than watching Sean stare off into the distance. Oh, yeah, watching him walk away.

  • I should have said "limp away."

  • I didn't realize there were so many more books then movies. I think 21 books or somrthing?

  • he gets women all the time

he doesnt like to drink french wine

    ok maybe sometimes

over the hills and far away

  • The character Tongue disappears from the lineup after "Sharpe's Eagle" with no explanation. Perkins was bayonetted in the back by an Irish deserter who was killed by Patrick Harper. Harris and Hagman were both killed at Waterloo after a suicidal breakout from a fort ordered by The Prince of Orange. He was then shot by sharpe on the battlefield.

The young rifleman was hanged for stealing a chicken by Provosts (Military Police).

  • thanks but what bout Cooper?

  • Cooper (Michael Mears) was in the story from the very start in the books and the films. He was in the army rather than go to jail for being a thief and pickpocket. He mysteriously drops off the cast list after Sharpes Gold.

  • Hard to trust a man who wants to borrow your picklock...

  • How could anyone "thumb down" a quote from the episode? Whoever did it isn't a fan of Sharpe!

  • haha I remember laughing at that line. great series.

  • Another one of Sharpes boys who appeared in several episodes was Rifleman Richard Moore played by.... Richard Moore. He is in episodes prior to Waterloo. Has a great pair of lambchop sideburns. He was also part of the production team. He is a weapons and pyrotechnics expert. To see a photo of him search under "Sharpe's Peril" on the internet.

  • cooper doesn't rejoin the army for waterloo

  • FYI, Rifleman Isaiah Tongue bites the big one in Sharpe's Gold (the book).

  • Thanks for that Sir T. Long time since I read the book, getting a bit rusty!

  • I met the bloke who plays Harris at the festival of history last year down in Kelmarsh hall and I asked about Tongue. Apparently the actor got an offer he thought was better and left the show, bet he's kicking himself now!

  • wot happened to all the chosen men, coz we only have sharpe and Harper by the end of it

  • i think they were all killed off by the final episode in the box set or i think they were discharged i cant remember
