mate, its all well and good for you to call him an idiot, but be sure to get your facts right first. in v8 supercars, you dont "test" the brakes. you dont go around a 300 kmh track with blind corners without knowin if the fucking brakes work. and, he wasnt testing the brakes. he was warming his tyres and strayed onto the racing line, and poor old taz douglas didnt have time to slow down or decide which way to go to try and avoid him. nobodys fault, just a racing incident.
To the poster of the video - Yes, completely right. Complete brain fade from Winterbottom. He was apportioned the blame and accepted it. ( along with a $15,000 fine ) Other drivers complained about his conduct in practise too. Yet, the wooden headed clowns still chime in with all sorts of nonsense. They don't even know enough about racing to see what's going on right in front of their eyes.
C: The guy who crashed hesitated and went to the wrong side of the track a bit b4 so he was off the racing line.If he had stayed on the line it wouldn't have happened prob
A: Regardless if it's a practice session, you still need to have a warmup lap. Obviously the no 5 was warming his tires up.
B: It's a good thing he didnt run into the back of him.
C: The guy who crashed had no idea where he was going to go. He then turned onto the inside, and the no 5 moved to the other side, so did th guy who crashed.
More like the dickhead coming up behind him wasn't paying atttention...and you, falconsR, I notice you don't let people leve comments on ur site, maybe cos you know how wrong u are...your little rave about XA design starts to talk about torino's, but fails to mention that that idea was never used.. so what do YOU drive, some shitty little 4 cyl VC commodore?
yeh thanks for the vote of confidence there sport - hope the weather's fine up there on your lofty tower... I wasnt at the drivers briefing as you clearly were, I'm just responding to a youtube clip.
mate, the ONLY difference between a coupe and a 4 door, or a mustang or torino is the body shape...that is what the design argument YOU raised refers to, not the architecture. The reason they keep the architecture the same is because it works.
Yep, true, its a fairly basic design, doesn't make it bad...the fact that Ford have churned out millions and that many are still on the road 40 years later shows it works, and car heads can fix them themselves...if you don't like it, don't buy one - what DO you drive, by the way??
i,ve never claimed it bad just its history isnt fully true or told in full.i prefer older cars as they are much easier to work on,parts are short in demand and years make searching more difficult.
See now we come back to basics - why do you reckon I drive a 37 y o car that I've put all the running gear into (including a 351), done bodywork etc myself? And never claimed its bad? WTF is your username all about then? I don't slag off on opels, do I? I've owned over 120 cars , many of which have been older chev's AND fords AND Chryslers - they all have problems and quirks so why be so negative about one brand? Its SO frustrating how so many GM guys feel they have to diss on fords - its lame.
modern cars are basically shit.and my username is nothing dont see the big deal with it?,here overseas i dont rate ford above me bullocks much, thats me.
If I'm `proving' that they didn't base the coupe on the Torino - um, how about you go onto Google images and actually have a look at any year Torino you care to look at, and see if it looks anything like a falcon coupe? Duh. The coupe was designed locally by an exec on a napkin - famous story reported in several books.
About what? About `Case closed google.you need to work overseas to get the real truth', thats what.. what does THAT mean? Oh, and similarities? You mean they both have a two door fastback body? Not ONE panel is the same - there is NO interchangeability...
google search case closed.and this is what they claim againts commodores of the opel days, yet i can tell you 100% what parts and pieces match and dont match on that car,and what sections were used from many of the body pieces floor planing of which generations.just because they tell you one thing doesn't mean its totally true.short one front bumper same see easy.
for your info I was a tradesman at GM/H from 1975 to early 80's, I know VERY well the origins of (Opel ) Commodores..I remember them taking a VB out the plant at Elizabeth to tow a caravan around Aust - it came back 10 minutes later with the back doors flapping cos the shell had deformed...THAT was when they realised that the Opel shell needed more strengthening. Even then they are flimsy as all hell - do a youtube search for the VB crash test - I'm sure you won't feel too safe after that..
strengthen over the opel c but very weak still.its more the later models, the vn as you know it was made up of opel c opel a and senator b,with floor plan an carry over from days gone by.
@Mitch737800 Absolutely no idea... what would be the point of adding weight and removing the driveshaft knowing you are about to do a crash test? It would skew the results and make the test pointless...lets say, hypothetically, that they WERE to do this though - the driveshaft adds no strength to the vehicle structurally in real terms (Imean, its not added for strength in accidents, eh?) and as for extra weight, 4 passengers would weigh more so really wouldn't affect outcome anyway...
@xbfalcon351coupe ah but what if you had just designed a really cool new crash test center and needed something to show it off with, what better an opening display then a car being folded like a concertina against a wall?
@Mitch737800 Oh come on, whats the likelihood of that? You've just designed a new crash centre at huge cost, so the 1st thing you do is a dodgy test so that nobody trusts your results? Deus ex machina and Occams razor, mate... in other words, the most likely explanation is the most obvious - the car was simply weak and fell apart. While what you suggest is possible it is also extremely improbable and unlikely...
@xbfalcon351coupe notice i said DEMONSTRATION? while seeing if the equipment works you also demonstrate just how much force the drivetrain absorbs in a crash. the only way we'll ever know is if we test another commodore
@xbfalcon351coupe You show such ignorance. V8 Supercars are neither Holden's or Falcon's apart from an approximate copy of the blue print of the stock engine block and the use of the actual body of each, otherwise they are just a bunch of panels stuck to a frame on a race platform. They are each designed to come apart on impact for safety reasons. To judge the real thing by the racing car shows your ignorance and lack of knowledge on this subject. Ford are crap, lol.
@swagonwheels WHERE do I show this ignorance - if you read the above posts we're arguing about the origins of Falcon coupes. I agree that V8 supercars are clones of each other with different badges - except you end your little rave bagging Fords - after saying they're the same under the skin.... who's showing their ignorance, eh?
@xbfalcon351coupe No ignorance just first hand experience. Ford have been dumping the same old rubbish on their customers from day one,
For decades, Ford were never reliable, yet I've driven every model of Holden in all kinds of conditions for millions of kilometers and never had a failure yet. I know which brand I'd bet my nuts on and it would never be a Ford, not ever. Ford are still crap, lol.
@swagonwheels whatever, buddy. I worked at GMH as an apprentice then tradesman when Commodores first came out. Don't tell me you know how great they are, EVERYONE at Holdens from the bosses on down couldn't believe how weak they were when we first got the Opel shells. I've seen them stretch towing vans till the back doors flopped open; I've seen the stillborn `Stateswood' get rejected because it was such a dog, and a million other failures. I've seen little fanboys like you over the years - sad.
@swagonwheels You, sir, are a fool of the highest order. First, I never said the rejected Opels - i said they rejected Stateswoods. Do you even know what a Stateswood is? Second, Commodores ARE based on Opels and they ARE still structurally weak - fact. Thirdly, I've owned at least 30 Holdens and a half dozen Chevs. Unlike you, I am not a one eyed brand name loser. Finally, the bosses consulted with tradesmen all the time - I know what they thought because we talked to each other.
@xbfalcon351coupe They were patronising you, it was widely known you were a very negative person, a whinger really, so they just told you what you wanted to hear.
You're one of the ignorant who think cars should be built like tanks, it's just that you don't understand shock absorption and crumple zones, not to mention power to weight and fuel savings. Every vehicle these days is designed entirely differently to the cars you want returned, you're a way out of touch.
@swagonwheels By the way, the `ignorance' comment related to V8 supercars , not road cars. I asked you to show where I was ignorant and you conveniently change the subject. Mate, Holdens and Fords are slapped together by the same bored production workers and disinterested tradesmen - I know, I was one of them. Believe me, if you ever worked there you'd see they're nothing special, and you'd also know how stupid it sounds saying one is better than the other - they're all just chucked together.
@swagonwheels Again, you are a fool who cannot comprehend what is put in front of you. For your info, EVERYONE in Holden's from Chuck Chapman down had the same attitude toward the dross we were producing - it was embarrasing. And as for fixing everything before it went out, are you serious? Do you know how often we issued recalls back then? Mate, you're a fool. Here I am telling you what it was actually like and fanboys like you can't take it. Go whack off to your Brock and Skaife posters.
@xbfalcon351coupe Wow!, you really are losing it, lol. Have you ever heard of anger management? I'm sitting here playing with your tiny mind and you're coming in like a real spinner, lol.
Ford are still crap, lol.
Oh and I'm having Peters baby, lol. and Mark is our child's godfather.
The Gods, drivers of the chariots of the Gods, the mountain lions, the kings of the Mountain, look what happened to Lowndes when he drove a Falcon, now he's back in the winners circle, lol.
Frosty (Car 5) had charges put on him for that and either Sam Walter or Taz Douglas had to go to hospital

Tim Shenkin clearly stated that weekend in the drivers briefing that there would be none of that unless you had a decent gap to the car behind you.
