I don't like Glenn Beck, but there is no better way to ruin an older engine than feeding it Ethanol. I'm now putting 89 Octane in a car that, nominally, only needs 87 just to avoid the 10% ethanol. Immediately, you notice a difference: fuel economy improves, engine knocking is reduced or eliminated and performance is way better.
@jacketman22 Tons of marine engines also damaged. ethonal been bad from the start. 10% less energy is close to the cost differences going in refiners pockets! Some places are considering insane policy and want amounts rasied in gas. This is a scam based on tax credits and world food bank says pricing pressures from bio fuels have caused huge food price increases resulting in the world now seeing food riots and children starving to death as a direct result of this policy
@BigTeamNightmare Governments all around the world sold the public on the idea of burning food in their cars based on these stupid greens. We are seeing food riots and children starve to death because of bio fuels. World food bank reports most of basic food stuff cost increases are due to stupid bio fuel programs sold to public under the idea of being green and political correct. Why is Beck bad person to point out a policy that is starving children to death?
What do you mean this does not make sense? We see food riots appearing around the world and we not had this type of problem for many years. The World Food Bank attributes MOST of this starvation due to increased food prices due to burning billions of tons of food in cars and thus the result is children starving around the world. As Beck said a drunken rodeo clown can figure out how spectacular stupid it is to burn such huge amounts of food in cars when people are starving.
Comparing production of spirits with government mandated subsides for billions of tons of food burned in cars is insane. In Germany the cost of beer has risen mainly due to huge amounts of foodstuffs being used for ethanol and same for durum wheat in Italy (causing price of pasta to rise). One tank of ethanol can feed a family of 4 for one year. You stupid greens and socialists support polices that create food riots and starving children and everything you touch turns into one giant crap hole.
@Albertkallal you retards really will blame just about everything for inflation. your puny tiny little brain just cant comprehend things beyond what you were told to believe.
Commodity markets are far more sensitive to supply changes than the input energy costs. Paying $100 to transport 10 tons of food with market prices $20 per bushel means even 50% increase in fuel to $150 = 10 tons = 400 bushels of wheat and extra $50 spread over 400 = 50/400 = .12 cents increase. World food bank is correct that MOST recent food price increases are not energy but stupid green socialist bio fuel programs that caused huge increase in basic food prices and resulting starving children
its funny that 90% of the food u eat every day has well idk corn starch, corn syrup. not to menthion that gas contains some ethonal but whait e85 is using so much corn up lol comon people realy so the e85 plants in north dekota r only using corn funny cuz they use sugar beats lol how about the 50,000 farmers that were told not grow any crop at all instead get paid to do nothing
Glen Beck is very undereducated on this subject. Higher food costs have to do with higher energy cost, most specifically, crude. Energy has twice as much impact on food costs than corn. Less than 20 cents of your food price dollar goes toward on-farm costs like grain; more than 80% of the real cost of food comes from off-farm costs, energy-intensive costs like processing, packaging, labor, and transportation.
What trailer park you been living in? Please explain how burning millions and millions tons of food in cars is not going to cause food prices to increase? What economics class did you miss? The World bank pointed out that from 2002 to 2008, the 140% increase is food stuffs, only 15% was due to increased energy costs (makes sense, since not all of the food cost is energy). They went on to state that 75% of the increase in food costs was due to bio fuels. Using more food = increase food cost!
@Albertkallal : Do you even know how corn ethanol is made? Here I'll give you an education. The corn is coarse ground to crack open the heart, which is the starchy part of the corn that cattle can't digest. It is then cooked to turn the starch into sugars, then yeast is added to turn the sugars into alcohol. Which is then distilled. What happens to the rest of the grain? It is dried, sacked, and sold to cattle farmers as a high protein FEED!!! It's actually BETTER then reg. feed!!!
The starch part is the food value we could use to reduce food riots and starving children we see around the world. What part about pumping billions of dollars of tax subsides into air able land that COULD be used feed people are you ignoring here? What part about wasting huge amounts of water, fuel and human labor can you not grasp? USA has tons of oil and current corn ethanol is not a cellulose system. This is a tax scam and waste of land resources that could be used to feed starving children.
@Albertkallal : So what your saying is that we should feed the "starving people" of OPEC. The ones that just this past year put up a symbolic tree at Christmas time. One that cost $200,000,000. The ones who live in houses the size of resorts that only the extremely rich can afford to go to. The fact of the matter is that we do not need to strictly use corn for ethanol. There are other crops. Besides, the corn that is most used for fuel is FEED corn, not food corn.
No I saying we should have a brain and adopt policies that make sense. Turning wheat in Italy into ethanol has caused the price of pasta to go up. Same thing in Germany where even the price of beer has increased due to burning good foodstuffs in cars. Those large increases translate directly into children starving around the world. And worse all of this bio fuel crap was sold to the public under the green banner. Simply put burning this food and using land for cars is just plain stupid.
As for the corn being used for feed? No that land and resources could be better used. It is a waste of huge water, huge labor, and waste of fuel and machines like tractors and human labor that could be used to feed starving people. Once again, it a question of using land in an intelligent fashion, not be part of the greens galatically stupid idea of burning food in cars.
@Albertkallal : Better used? We're already using it for feed corn for cattle. And the prices you claim are going up because of using crops for fuel are going up mostly because of transportation costs. Everything you touch is, at some point, transported by truck, train, boat, or plane. All of those use fossil fuel. The cost of fuel goes up, the cost of transportation goes up, the price goes up. Keep the cost of the fuel down and the price stays down. It's proved itself time and time again.
World food bank notes MOST foodstuff price increases are NOT due to energy. Truck can carry 10 tons of food for about 30 liters of fuel at $1 dollar per liter ($30). If price of gas goes up 50% that transportation cost is now $45. At $375 dollars per ton of wheat, you now going to pay $1.50 more at $376.50 ($15 more over 10 tons). The VAST majority of food stuff increases are due to increased commodity prices due to using excess food as bio fuels in place of keeping world food prices low.
@Albertkallal : Besides how can you wast water? Water is one of those amazing things that recycles itself. From the water you cook with, to the water you drink. It all eventually goes back into the environment. You can pollute water. BP proved that. But any water that is used in distilling ethanol is boiled off as clean steam and goes back into the earth. And don't even try to say that ethanol pollutes water. Ethanol is water soluble. Everyone known crude oil is not.
And the massive amounts of water and fertilizer and human labor used to grow the crops and we are to ignore that water use is just insane when that land +water + crop growing can be used to create food for people. I will support this when the recent new round of food riots and huge food price rises due to bio fuels (and not energy costs) is non existent and until that occurs you are just pushing a policy of starvation that is causing children to go hungry around the world and that is just sad.
@Albertkallal : You know what? I can agree with you on the use of too much fertilizer. But if we were smart we wouldn't need chemical fertilizer. I've already stated my thoughts on the water issue. But your telling me that your against putting people to work? More labor needed to grow crops = more jobs for people who need them = a stronger economy. If we can help others we should, but not at the expense of our own people. BTW, where are all these food riots your talking about?
You NEVER put people to work based on being stupid or making your economy less efficient. This is the whole problem with government stimulus jobs. Those jobs do not natural exist and when you stop the funding then the jobs goes away (and you are left with huge more debt and all they did was buy more stuff from china). You ONLY increase wealth in an economy by increasing the output and value of labor used or by not wasting the resources you have. Wasting land and fuel and labor makes us poor.
@Albertkallal : Your kidding right? So what your saying is that the fuel industry is just suddenly going to disappear? Or that the demand for fuel is going to disappear? What they're talking about here is creating a new supply for an ever increasing demand. Look at Brazil, who is mostly fuel independent. They are ahead of the game here. You don't see their ethanol industry failing. If it's doing anything it's growing. And their country is growing along with it. We need this.
In what statement am I suggesting or hinting the fuel industry is to go away? I do not understand your point in this regards. And to compare the ethanol industry in Brazil and tropical weather use of sugar cane to that of the air able land we are using with corn is ridiculous on your part. Fact is Europe and USA bio fuel programs are wasting huge amounts of good food and as the world food bank points out these bio fuel programs are responsible for most of the increases in basic foodstuffs.
@Albertkallal : Because I said that you can create jobs by putting to work creating more crops and the production of the ethanol itself, and you went and compared them to stimulus jobs saying that they would go away. Ethanol doesn't have to be made strictly from corn. As a matter of fact one of the best crops to yield for ethanol is cattails, but they need marshy areas to grow in. Sugar beats is another good crop. Corn is used because it is radially grown and available, and easy to grow.
Right and my point is that if the jobs are wasting resources, then you not building a better economy but are making it worse. The issue is when you create a job based on borrowing money or false economies due to tax subsides (such as corn ethanol), then you are doing something really stupid and the artificial job makes us poor. As for the point that ethanol does not have to be made from corn is fine, but the problem is we ARE using corn and that is the whole point and topic of discussion here.
@Albertkallal : Wasting resources? Did you really just say that? Like pulling crude oil up out of the ground isn't wasting resources. Crude oil is not replenishable, corn and other plants are. Not to mention that we can find natural ways to grow corn and other crops that won't harm the environment. We can't do that with crude. And I will tell you again. The corn used for ethanol is livestock FEED corn, NOT the corn used for human FOOD. It's already there. Set aside for the feeding of livestock.
We use steel to make pots to cook food and the idea because steel can rust and is not renewable means we should not use it is beyond stupid on your part. Bio fuel policies are causing children around the world to go hungry and that land resource used for bio fuel in regards to wheat in Europe or corn in the USA is a waste of precious resources. That land is wasted ONLY due to huge tax subsidies. Only feed here is those at the government trough for handouts. These policies are causing starvation.
@Albertkallal : LMAO.... The sad part is that I've seen pots and pans made from iron that date back to the 1800's. And besides, rust is a natural substance called iron oxide. It happens in nature all the time. Destroying our environment, and waging wars over oil is causing more starvation then growing a natural fuel ever will. Why? Because we would have the power to shift the need at any time. You can't feed starving people crude oil.
And no that land is NOT set aside for feed it ONLY set aside due to subsidies. I open to a cellulose type of system, but the current system and the current policies are beyond stupid and are insane and are a waste of good land for food. As the world food bank points out these policies are causing starvation of people around the world. What part are you not getting about people starving and wasting good land for food? Exactly why do you love starving people to death?
@Albertkallal : I'm talking about the land they are using now. Only about 8% of corn crops is used for food corn, and we have a surplus of that. The subsidies are being used because they are paying farmers NOT to grow anymore food corn because we can't get rid of it fast enough. We are darn near giving it away to other nations, and this is driving the price of the corn down making it un-economical for the farmers to grow. If anyone is starving it's because of their own government not our corn.
Ethanol is moonshine, it can be made from all kinds of scraps.
Why was a working electric car killed off in Cali. despite the vehicles being a success?
It sure wasn't because someone uber-green didn't want any more roads being built. At least electric cars are QUIET and don't pollute nearly as much as combustion engine vehicles.
I say to hell with Ethanol, we dont need jobs in the US, we dont need farmers, we dont need our own fuel production that hires thousands of workers, we dont need to stop giving 700 billion to Oil companies just in profits during a 4 month period. We need to send all of our dependance overseas and we need to be reliant on everyone else but us. He must have already forgot that gas was as high as 5.00 a gallon in TN after Hurricane Ike. but wait, he doesnt pay for his own gas, its given to him.
This ethanol issue is not about jobs and trade, it is about a brain dead policy. You dont waste good ariable land and use up enough food to feed a family for one year (one tank of ethanol uses enough food to feed a family for 1 year). Tax subsidies alone make this a scam. We are taking about waste and something that makes the nation poorer. Worse is using this corn means that milk, poultry and all kinds of food stuffs will rise in cost. So this ethanol will just cause children to starve.
I think this is more about the hate of corn alone. Some were saying we could switch up by growing switch grass to make ethanol instead of corn to feed our cars. Screw John Lithgow. We just replaced a corn field that feeds people with a switch grass field to feed the cars. Luckily this issue is forgotton and corn is being grown as before
It is patently dishonest to say there is a food versus fuel problem. By taking out the carbohydrates from corn to make ethanol, the leftovers could actually be used at least ten different ways to feed fish, livestock, even mushrooms.
Cattle health will benefit by eating DDGS which is closer to what they are supposed to eat.
Feeder corn cannot be eaten raw by humans. For one thing, it's the wrong variety, two, it's GMO corn.
Ethanol, then food (DDGS) is a win - win situation for America
You must either (1) Live in the Midwest, (2) be a farmer, or (3) work for the farm lobby.
Farming is one of the dirtiest industries in the U.S. Why make it any dirtier? Corn ethanol with double green house gases and cause much more air, soil, and water pollution.
The point is, the anti ethanol Big Oil whores like Pimentel are using a double standard for accounting how energy is produced. It does take 15% or more of oil to get it to market, yet they ignore the deficit for Big Oil and cry like little girls about Ethanol having energy expenses, as everything in the real world has.
Hey, pay attention man. It isn't just the Big Oil folks who are anti-ethanol. Most of us treehuggers hate it too-at least corn ethanol. And, Big Oil loves ethanol. What corporations do you think have interest in ethanol???? Read up on BP and the like.
It use to take more energy to make gas than you could get out of it,so what?
The trouble with you people is you don't seem to unerstand that more and better fuel crops can be grown.
It's not a choice between corn to eat or corn for fuel.
This is a choice between sitting on your asses or letting people like me who can make the car you have right now run on 105 octane E85 get us out of this mess.
>take more energy to make gas than you could get out of it,so what?
Are you nuts? We talking about good corn to make ethanol. How can you sleep at night and say "so what?" You don't care if you using more energy and using good ariable land that could feed the poor? Wasting energy and resources makes everyone more poor and results in less food for starving people. So, lets just adopt a stupid taxation scheme by corn farmers and congress and look the other way? Can you really be this stupid?
>more and better fuel crops can be grown. Well "can" is the operative word here. You have to explain to me how using all the fuel, labor, land, and the waste of good growing land that could feed people is a great idea? There is some cellulose type of ethanol can make sense, but WE ARE NOT TAKING ABOUT that type of ethanol at all here! We're talking about a big huge waste of tax dollars and waste of food that's causing food prices around the world to raise. Corn ethanol is just plain stupid.
No, you not been saying that the whole time, you finally made this clear now! Great someone has a better way to make ethanol. That is fine and dandy. However, in case your having comprehension difficulties the topic and posts here are about corn ethanol. The current system is a waste from top to bottom and is really mostly about a about bunch of people raking government money through subsidies. The whole corn thing is just plain stupid and it needs to stop right now. Got it?
The simple matter here is we just trying to be CLEAR on what we are talking about. For what reason are you bringing up Brazil? What the hell does Brazil have anything to do with CORN based ethanol? Why are you now ragging about Beck not knowing about Brazil when the subject is CLEARY talking about corn based ethanol? It simply is an rotten move and disinformation on your part to cloud this issue. We are taking about corn based system and how stupid it is to waste food and resources. got it?
>It's not a choice between corn to eat or corn for fuel. Oh yes it is! Because it's the land you're wasting that can grow other crops to feed people! Tell me then why can't the land be used to grow good food? Even worse in this case it is GOOD corn! That corn can be used for everything from Poultry to feed for cows that gives us milk. Seen the Large increases in these products of late, it's exactly because of this corn issue. It not really the corn, it is waste of good land + resources anyway.
No, it is not wrong because we ARE talking about CORN here. If there is other crops, then fine, but corn is not one of them you fool! We are talking about corn right now and this corn ethanol is the most complete and brain dead wrong way to make fuel. If you lack such intellectual ability to understand the topic here I suggest you stay away from your computer for a while. The discussion here is about corn ethanol and it is the most stupid dumb policy we ever put in place. Got it?
>people like me who can make the car you have right now run on 105 octane E85. This is about wasting resources and causing children around the world to starve. So in your great idealism you're adopting a policy that makes us poor, waste resources, wastes food, will cause children to starve. I have absolutely no idea how people like you can even sleep at night. You have to be absolutely nuts to stand here and tell me that the current system of corn ethanol funded by taxation is a good idea.
>Really? people in this country are this dumb now?
How sad. Go back and find where I say we should use corn
You never said anything about NOT using corn either! The topic and video is about corn ethanol and that's what ANY reader here would assume. To start talking about ethanol in a post and video that is about corn is nothing short of complete and utter dishonesty and spin on your part. Please don't do that in the future. corn ethonal is plain stupid. Got it?
You cannot both call yourself an environmentalist and support crop-based ethanol. Anyone who does is simply uninformed or greedy.
As an environmentalist myself, I think most of us realized from ethanol's first uses in the marketplace that it is most definitely nowhere near what we need to replace gasoline.
In the UK, all agriculture would have to be for fuel ethanol, and the country would have to even IMPORT ethanol to meet its domestic energy needs.
growing cattails on marginal land using primary treated sewage can yield 50 billion gallons of ethanol and 100 billion gallons of methane net off of 20 million acres, which is NOT prime farmland, and only comprises 3/4 of one percent of all land in the U.S.
Ethanol can be the answer, it depends on how wisely one designs the process.
Read "Alcohol can be a Gas" and You will understand how the American people have been screwed.
you seem to know alot. will using ethanol completely replace oil even with the price of feed for chickens, beef, pigs, etc. going sky high, in turn making food of all sorts go up for us? if you think about it, thats like everything thats in the grocery store-milk, eggs, bread, chips, cereal, etc. etc. etc. ......im seeing more bad than good here. not worth it.
This subject and this video is about how stupid the policy is of burning corn or wheat in cars in place of using that for feeding people or farm animals. The current policy of wasting large amounts of good quality food in the usa is still THE MOST STUPID POLICY in the world. If we talking about the cellulose and sugar cane process used in Brazil then it can make sense. Right now the whole corn ethanol thing is a tax grab and waste of good food. Corn is 100% different issue then the Brazil case.
Of course it takes more energy to produce ethanol than it provides. Everything takes more energy to produce than it provides, It's called the Law of Conservation of Energy. Stupid argument. It costs Brazil $0.83 USD to produce ethanol. Shit is way cheaper than gas and it doesn't pollute like gas does. Since we have vehicles that run off both ethanol and gas it's an easy transition.
Do you actually think people here stupid? Conservation energy does not apply in this case. When you use coal, oil etc then you taking energy that been captured. If you go and scoop up a shovel of coal and dump it in your furnace you get thousands of times of the energy output as what you put in. In the case of corn ethanol(which is the subject here), you're energy inputs are way too high, and it a waste of resources and ariable land that could be used to feed starving children around the world.
What the heck, left over's? So, let's just ignore the huge waste of land, and ignore the huge tax grab by these people? Man, what gives with people like you? It is a stupid idea. If you want people to improve their diets then let's grow some better food and not waste that land on something stupid like corn ethanol. This insane policy is causing basic food costs to rise. We not talking about a cellulose process here, we talking about the CURRENT use of good land to grow corn that can better used.
Inflation's due to the War on some Terrorists, same as Vietnam. Speculators are jumping on anything but Dollar. Nothing to do with Ethanol! Farmers planted 19 million more acres than last yr. only used 11 million for Ethanol.
If it weren't for WAR inflation, corn should have dropped in price.
Any hot dog cart pusher has a greater grasp on economics than the people who believe this article You quote from.
IMF article is unpublished, authors couldn't stand scrutiny of having to provide sources.
It would be quite amazing that all the countries around the world burning foodstuffs in cars it not having an effect on food prices. The world bank report (not imf) will be released soon, and it's conclusions makes a lot of sense. It don't take much of a brain to see why this is a problem and is causing strain on the food system. We can wait until the report is officially released, but I have little doubts the conclusions of the report will remain on solid grounds.
July 05, 2008 Biofuels behind food price hikes: Biofuels have caused world food prices to increase by 75 percent according to an unpublished World Bank report published in The Guardian newspaper on Friday. Senior World Bank economist assessed that increased demand from India and China has not been the cause of rising food prices. "Rapid income growth in developing countries has not led to large increases in global grain consumption and was not a major factor for the large price increases,"
"Without the increase in biofuels, global wheat and maize stocks would not have declined appreciably and price increases due to other factors would have been moderate," the report said. It added that the drive for biofuels has distorted food markets by diverting grain away from food for fuel, encouraging farmers to set aside land for its production, and sparked financial speculation on grains. Higher energy and fertilizer prices accounted for an increase of only 15 percent
The basket of food prices examined in the study rose by 140 percent between 2002 and this February," The Guardian said. "The report estimates that higher energy and fertilizer prices accounted for an increase of only 15 percent, while biofuels have been responsible for a 75 percent jump over that period."
Our contribution regarding greenhouse gases as carbon dioxide amounts to 0.43 of 9-27 % of the total greenhouse effect. If globally introduced, it will mean a 3% there off.
Hundreds of millions of tons of food crops are burned while prices are rising.
And the poor will suffer the first.
A recipe for disaster.
And they got already a long list concerning this kind of ludicrous ideas.
Yes, if this is a stupid subsidy for oil then lets get rid of it.. This is not a bipolar argument here that any support is bad. Bad subsidies are bad and good subsidies are good. So if the oil subsidy is bad then yes I agree with you lets get rid of it. It is not an all or nothing for every case it is a case by case in which we use our brains.
Beck and his Neocon friends love National Socialism. A.K.A. Corporatism.
They absolutely support only one choice in liquid fuels and Heaven help them if they ever turned their backs on Big Oil or they would be out of a job in a New York Minute.
A Public-Private partnership is what National Socialism is all about. Keep the little guys out and make it sweet for the insiders.
Can we agree to eliminate all subsidies to all energy providers regardless of source?
You can't have this argument both ways. Telling me that oil gets huge subsides for oil, and beck is against ethanol. Being against ethanol CLEARY means one is against the subsides that allow this stupid system to function (hypocrisy of you to spin this as support of oil). As for removing subsidies, yes, you darn right I agree with you on removing subsides for ethanol. Socialism is socialism, and the idea that somehow national socialism is any different is another silly argument on your part
Yes, bet your boots we will let the readers decide. Thank goodness we don't have to just listen to the liberal mainstream press that effects people with weak minds. The fact is we need to stand up to this bull crap from these do good socialists pushing a green agenda that is a stupid waste of land. Basic food prices are being effected by these terrible policies. When I see people like you trying to defend this type of policy, it clear how the National Socialists came to power in Europe in WWII
Just as Beck's Wall St. Guest is about to expand on opening the 40 million acre farm land reserve that pays Farmers not to farm Beck shuts him up, lest we realize there is plenty of land to grow things on.
Sure there's plenty of land to grow things on, but is not unlimited resources and fuel to make that land useable. Furthermore your logic does not justify stupid use of land. Stupid use of land is called stupid use of land, why you standing here and promoting and telling everybody that we should be stupid and do stupid things with our land? Just because we have additional land line around doesn't mean that we also have to throw are brains out and become stupid all of sudden.
If Mr. Beck were honest, He would point out Big Oil pockets the 61 cent Ethanol Subsidy when they blend Ethanol with their gasoline.
Since most Ethanol is blended with gasoline to boost octane and clean auto emissions, Oil Companies are reluctant to admit this fact.
Big oil also gets some 10x to 11x more subsidy than the ethanol subsidy is. Beck won't say because Big Oil and Banking owns the Media in the USA, and Beck is their best Liar of the Day via omission.
People the world over can buy DDGS worth perhaps 7 cents a pound, and ship it anywhere and grow mushrooms or raise fish at their end.
Since DDGS is 18 lbs rather than 56 lbs of the original corn bushel, thus concentrated is less $ to ship, savings helps people feed even more people all over earth.
People need protein and fat, which DDGS is.
People don't need carbs, that is already in too much supply. Those carbs make ethanol so we don't need Neocons, Beck, or middle east Oil, or War.
In case you hadn't noticed, corn feed is used for just about everything in the food chain and can even effect the price of milk. Worse yet, is why are you making the insane assumption we have to grow corn on that land? I can't believe you're making an argument as to the fact that we're growing something stupid on this land, therefore we should use that land in a stupid fashion, what kind of insane logic is that?
Then use it for feed, and not cars. You still make ZERO arguments as to why we should be wasting these resources for cars in place of food. it makes no sense...none, zero...nada...
Removing the Carbs from corn just makes what is left over better for cows to eat. True, there is not as much gain per acre, but farmers also net the income from ethanol as well, getting back to a more sound footing finance wise.
It not the corn you fool, it is the fact that the land COULD BE BETTER used to produce food. It is just pure insane on your part to stand here and tell me because the crop is not that great for humans, then that is a excuse to waste the land and resources on something stupid such as corn ethanol? It not the corn you idiot, it the fact that your wasting all the fuel, water, fertilizer and labor on land that can be use to feed starving children by using that land for BETTER use. Got it you fool!
You aren't a farmer who has FEW choices to grow something that can be marketed.
In many places in the US, the only thing in a small town is a grain elevator to buy corn, or soy, barley etc.
Until Ethanol, there weren't options to add value to a farmers product. Options like feeding the leftovers to make mushrooms, etc. Add huge value to a farmer's income, or a small town operator who has the moxie to take some shipping containers and grow mushrooms for food and profit. No one need starve.
Right, but with without all those subsides this would not be a viable product or choice for these farmers. The fact of the matter is we are using tractors, fuel, labor and good ariable land that can be used to use grow good food instead of burning it our cars. What exactly a part of the English language don't you understand about the stupidity of this?
There is a limit to the stupidity you pushing here. You've completely ignored the issues, you completely intellectually failed to point out why we should not be using that land for better uses to feed the starving children around the world. It just amazes me that you can stand here and accept policies that will starve people around the world, and adopt policies that is just so unbelievably wasteful of the land and resources that need to be used for growing food.
In 2007, 11 million acres of corn that went into Ethanol generated enough distillation leftovers, DDGS to feed mushrooms or fish to make enough protein, 10 to 12 million tons worth. That is enough protein to keep 307 million people in 1.5 lbs a week of fish or mushrooms for a year. Far better than 1 million lbs of beef, only enough for 1/10 as many people. DDGS weighs 1/3 of raw corn. Easier to ship more places on earth.
We talking about corn ethanol, and it was stated as such. Just because you not listened is no reason for you to try and sugar coat this craziness. As stated, burning this corn food in cars is a STUPID. I can't imagine anyone trying to debate, or sweetie coat this stupid idea of using corn in a car. One tank of ethanol in a SUV equal to the food that can feed a person FOR ONE WHOLE year. Children will starve because of this idea. There is stupid, and then there is insane...this is insane!!
Ten bushels of yellow corn will not feed a person for a year. It is a lie.
No one eats Cattle feeder corn.
10 Bushels will make 28 gallons of ethanol we need and 180 lbs of protein/fat from DDGS via mushrooms that third world people need. Now, does a poor person have $15 to $20 to buy two sacks of DDGS to make $300 worth of Mushrooms or Tilapia?
Maybe We shouldn't have sent out the Economic Hit men to impoverish the world, for it looks like we need others in order to trade and prosper.
Diversification of the fuel supply is crucial. Ethanol offers a alternative to oil which reduces oil demand which will eventually with enough diversification reduce ability of oil producers to control our economy, etc. Imagine going to the grocery store and only being able to buy one kind of food and it was produced in the Middle East?
Diversification of energy supplies is a great goal and everybody wants that. The brain dead idea of ethanol is simply the worst possible thing we could ever invented. So you mean let's have children around the world starve? Ethanol is not a energy efficient process, and the only reason why we continue to do it is because of all the money grubbing pigs at the trough of tax subsidies. It is simply a money scam right now. Alternate fuels is great but not this one. Shame on you for supporting this.
We are stuck with Genetically engineered food. The european union doesnt buy it from us anymore because of mandatory labeling.
This was a big client. We are turning that food into Ethanol instead of stopping using stupid GMOs. That my friend, started the hole ethanol " hype ." Who is behind GMOs Monsanto. Monsanto and their lobby, are responsible for the ethanol shit, and the the food crisis right now.You are right man, Ethanol IS fucking shit, 1.4 petrol barrel= 1 ethanol barrel !!!???!??!??!?
The truth is that Ethanol from corn is 1.3 to 1.7 times more energy positive.
The corn is negative argument is a 30 year old lie from a Cornell Graduate with MOBIL money in his back pocket.
GMO is another problem. It must be fixed, if it can be. Farmers were lied to about GMO. It is dangerous, since it has been proved those inserted genes can jump to the bugs in Your gut. Someday Monsanto will be broke from lawsuits IMO, but the problem will be with us perhaps forever.
So you are saying children around the world starting starving since the introduction of ethanol as a fuel? Starvation in third world countries has nothing to do with ethanol and more to do with repressive governments, hapless charity organizations and economic ignorance. Ethanol is no more the cause of starving children than any other fuel supply. Farmers have shifted their production to meet demand. If you want to prevent starvation around the world then encourage economic development.
Or being forced to only buy 3.2 beer during daylight hours when You know stronger beer or wine is across a State Line and your Legislature Imagines to Know what is best for You.
You know how silly that would look!
Oh, wait a minute, that does happen in the land of the ,,,,,
Yellow corn isn't human food. You can take the left overs from 11 million acres of corn ethanol and make mushrooms on a pound for pound basis and that 7 cent pound of DDGS will make a pound of mushroom worth $2 to $7
Or Tilapia or Catfish for 70 to 80% feed conversion rate.
No One starves since MORE protein can be made from leftovers, it just won't all be bacon or beef.
"Alcohol can be a gas" a great way to learn how to get into positive change Beck won't tell U about. tinyurl com/56rrda
That land could be used for growing food. To state that the land is being used for crap that humans don't eat is stupid. Water, fertilizer, and fuel in the tractors could be used for growing food to feed starving children around the word. Really, a drunken rodeo clown knows that using food (corn) in cars is downright stupid. That land could be use for growing wheat to feed people. There is absolute ZERO case for corn ethanol, and it simply a huge waste of resources that could be better used.
Beck NEVER EVER made a statement as to who gets the subsidies. I don't give one hoot if it is oil, or who ever. It is the peoples tax dollars (end of argument). It still a stupid policy, and one that driven by politicians trying to justify the policy of being green. If Beck is saying this insane and should be stopped, then logic dictates that the oil companies would loose their subsides. So, you silly attempt to paint Beck as pandering to the oil companies is a laughable hollow argument.
That land must be paid for and there are only so many choices a farmer has to grow things!
Feeder Corn in USA is dryland. not irrigated.
Fertilizer runoff is a problem, but raising fish can result in much nutrients being returned to the land if raised close by, lowering the fertilizer bill of farmers.
Using Permaculture (dot com) to employ healthier ways to grow corn and other crops is a better long term way to live. Just as is using Ethanol that pollutes 98% less than gasoline
You are only burning the starch in corn which people and cattle don't need. There is enough leftovers to feed fish and make protein for about 2 billion people off of 80 million acres of corn.
This is using quality land that could be used to feed starving children. The World Bank organization just stated that current HUGE food increases are due to the stupid ethanol. We are not just using the starch in that corn. That is good useable food we burning, not cellulose. They are simply distilling good corn that could be better used. And that land could BETTER used for food to feed people. Don't give me crap about only using the starch, that not what we doing nor what we are talking about.
The World Bank in their You Tube release of an unpublished article points out corn only went up a it over 30% last year while wheat and other things went up 70 to 110 %
******************************************
There are enough leftovers in 80 million acres of corn to feed 2 billion people their daily protein needs. 3 Billion people if we also planted the 40 million acre land conservation bank that pays farmers not to farm.
I don't like Glenn Beck, but there is no better way to ruin an older engine than feeding it Ethanol. I'm now putting 89 Octane in a car that, nominally, only needs 87 just to avoid the 10% ethanol. Immediately, you notice a difference: fuel economy improves, engine knocking is reduced or eliminated and performance is way better.
jacketman22 6 hours ago
@jacketman22 Tons of marine engines also damaged. ethonal been bad from the start. 10% less energy is close to the cost differences going in refiners pockets! Some places are considering insane policy and want amounts rasied in gas. This is a scam based on tax credits and world food bank says pricing pressures from bio fuels have caused huge food price increases resulting in the world now seeing food riots and children starving to death as a direct result of this policy
Albertkallal 6 hours ago
Glenn Beck you are a douche bag
BigTeamNightmare 1 week ago
@BigTeamNightmare Governments all around the world sold the public on the idea of burning food in their cars based on these stupid greens. We are seeing food riots and children starve to death because of bio fuels. World food bank reports most of basic food stuff cost increases are due to stupid bio fuel programs sold to public under the idea of being green and political correct. Why is Beck bad person to point out a policy that is starving children to death?
Albertkallal 1 week ago
this guys arguement doesnt even make sense. we shouldnt feed our cattle corn anyways. they need fresh grass
sleeve318 4 months ago
What do you mean this does not make sense? We see food riots appearing around the world and we not had this type of problem for many years. The World Food Bank attributes MOST of this starvation due to increased food prices due to burning billions of tons of food in cars and thus the result is children starving around the world. As Beck said a drunken rodeo clown can figure out how spectacular stupid it is to burn such huge amounts of food in cars when people are starving.
Albertkallal 4 months ago
@Albertkallal alcohol has been around for thousands of years. its not like whiskey is this brand new thing thats now causing starvation.
sleeve318 4 months ago
Comparing production of spirits with government mandated subsides for billions of tons of food burned in cars is insane. In Germany the cost of beer has risen mainly due to huge amounts of foodstuffs being used for ethanol and same for durum wheat in Italy (causing price of pasta to rise). One tank of ethanol can feed a family of 4 for one year. You stupid greens and socialists support polices that create food riots and starving children and everything you touch turns into one giant crap hole.

@Albertkallal you retards really will blame just about everything for inflation. your puny tiny little brain just cant comprehend things beyond what you were told to believe.
sleeve318 4 months ago
Commodity markets are far more sensitive to supply changes than the input energy costs. Paying $100 to transport 10 tons of food with market prices $20 per bushel means even 50% increase in fuel to $150 = 10 tons = 400 bushels of wheat and extra $50 spread over 400 = 50/400 = .12 cents increase. World food bank is correct that MOST recent food price increases are not energy but stupid green socialist bio fuel programs that caused huge increase in basic food prices and resulting starving children

1. we've had massive surpluses of corn, about 2 billion bushels.
2. we only use the corn starch. the leftovers can be used as animal feed.
3. 90% of our corn is used for cattle, 80% goes through undigested.
4. we can instead grow sugar beets, sweet sourgum, and get about 1000gal/acre
5. we can grow kelp out in the ocean to make all the fuel we need.
6. there are more flex fuel cars than hybrids.
7. ethanol burns cooler, cleaner, therefore extends engine life.
8. create 26 million jobs.

Forget Corn Ethanol! Drop it, and work on using cellulosic ethanol.
lorddreams469 1 year ago
Glen Beck is very undereducated on this subject. Higher food costs have to do with higher energy cost, most specifically, crude. Energy has twice as much impact on food costs than corn. Less than 20 cents of your food price dollar goes toward on-farm costs like grain; more than 80% of the real cost of food comes from off-farm costs, energy-intensive costs like processing, packaging, labor, and transportation.
sdcorn 2 years ago
What trailer park you been living in? Please explain how burning millions and millions tons of food in cars is not going to cause food prices to increase? What economics class did you miss? The World bank pointed out that from 2002 to 2008, the 140% increase is food stuffs, only 15% was due to increased energy costs (makes sense, since not all of the food cost is energy). They went on to state that 75% of the increase in food costs was due to bio fuels. Using more food = increase food cost!
Albertkallal 2 years ago
@Albertkallal : Do you even know how corn ethanol is made? Here I'll give you an education. The corn is coarse ground to crack open the heart, which is the starchy part of the corn that cattle can't digest. It is then cooked to turn the starch into sugars, then yeast is added to turn the sugars into alcohol. Which is then distilled. What happens to the rest of the grain? It is dried, sacked, and sold to cattle farmers as a high protein FEED!!! It's actually BETTER then reg. feed!!!
screamineagle88 11 months ago
The starch part is the food value we could use to reduce food riots and starving children we see around the world. What part about pumping billions of dollars of tax subsides into air able land that COULD be used feed people are you ignoring here? What part about wasting huge amounts of water, fuel and human labor can you not grasp? USA has tons of oil and current corn ethanol is not a cellulose system. This is a tax scam and waste of land resources that could be used to feed starving children.
Albertkallal 11 months ago
@Albertkallal : So what your saying is that we should feed the "starving people" of OPEC. The ones that just this past year put up a symbolic tree at Christmas time. One that cost $200,000,000. The ones who live in houses the size of resorts that only the extremely rich can afford to go to. The fact of the matter is that we do not need to strictly use corn for ethanol. There are other crops. Besides, the corn that is most used for fuel is FEED corn, not food corn.
screamineagle88 11 months ago
No I saying we should have a brain and adopt policies that make sense. Turning wheat in Italy into ethanol has caused the price of pasta to go up. Same thing in Germany where even the price of beer has increased due to burning good foodstuffs in cars. Those large increases translate directly into children starving around the world. And worse all of this bio fuel crap was sold to the public under the green banner. Simply put burning this food and using land for cars is just plain stupid.
Albertkallal 11 months ago
As for the corn being used for feed? No that land and resources could be better used. It is a waste of huge water, huge labor, and waste of fuel and machines like tractors and human labor that could be used to feed starving people. Once again, it a question of using land in an intelligent fashion, not be part of the greens galatically stupid idea of burning food in cars.
Albertkallal 11 months ago
@Albertkallal : Better used? We're already using it for feed corn for cattle. And the prices you claim are going up because of using crops for fuel are going up mostly because of transportation costs. Everything you touch is, at some point, transported by truck, train, boat, or plane. All of those use fossil fuel. The cost of fuel goes up, the cost of transportation goes up, the price goes up. Keep the cost of the fuel down and the price stays down. It's proved itself time and time again.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
World food bank notes MOST foodstuff price increases are NOT due to energy. Truck can carry 10 tons of food for about 30 liters of fuel at $1 dollar per liter ($30). If price of gas goes up 50% that transportation cost is now $45. At $375 dollars per ton of wheat, you now going to pay $1.50 more at $376.50 ($15 more over 10 tons). The VAST majority of food stuff increases are due to increased commodity prices due to using excess food as bio fuels in place of keeping world food prices low.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : Besides how can you wast water? Water is one of those amazing things that recycles itself. From the water you cook with, to the water you drink. It all eventually goes back into the environment. You can pollute water. BP proved that. But any water that is used in distilling ethanol is boiled off as clean steam and goes back into the earth. And don't even try to say that ethanol pollutes water. Ethanol is water soluble. Everyone known crude oil is not.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
And the massive amounts of water and fertilizer and human labor used to grow the crops and we are to ignore that water use is just insane when that land +water + crop growing can be used to create food for people. I will support this when the recent new round of food riots and huge food price rises due to bio fuels (and not energy costs) is non existent and until that occurs you are just pushing a policy of starvation that is causing children to go hungry around the world and that is just sad.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : You know what? I can agree with you on the use of too much fertilizer. But if we were smart we wouldn't need chemical fertilizer. I've already stated my thoughts on the water issue. But your telling me that your against putting people to work? More labor needed to grow crops = more jobs for people who need them = a stronger economy. If we can help others we should, but not at the expense of our own people. BTW, where are all these food riots your talking about?
screamineagle88 10 months ago
You NEVER put people to work based on being stupid or making your economy less efficient. This is the whole problem with government stimulus jobs. Those jobs do not natural exist and when you stop the funding then the jobs goes away (and you are left with huge more debt and all they did was buy more stuff from china). You ONLY increase wealth in an economy by increasing the output and value of labor used or by not wasting the resources you have. Wasting land and fuel and labor makes us poor.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : Your kidding right? So what your saying is that the fuel industry is just suddenly going to disappear? Or that the demand for fuel is going to disappear? What they're talking about here is creating a new supply for an ever increasing demand. Look at Brazil, who is mostly fuel independent. They are ahead of the game here. You don't see their ethanol industry failing. If it's doing anything it's growing. And their country is growing along with it. We need this.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
In what statement am I suggesting or hinting the fuel industry is to go away? I do not understand your point in this regards. And to compare the ethanol industry in Brazil and tropical weather use of sugar cane to that of the air able land we are using with corn is ridiculous on your part. Fact is Europe and USA bio fuel programs are wasting huge amounts of good food and as the world food bank points out these bio fuel programs are responsible for most of the increases in basic foodstuffs.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : Because I said that you can create jobs by putting to work creating more crops and the production of the ethanol itself, and you went and compared them to stimulus jobs saying that they would go away. Ethanol doesn't have to be made strictly from corn. As a matter of fact one of the best crops to yield for ethanol is cattails, but they need marshy areas to grow in. Sugar beats is another good crop. Corn is used because it is radially grown and available, and easy to grow.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
Right and my point is that if the jobs are wasting resources, then you not building a better economy but are making it worse. The issue is when you create a job based on borrowing money or false economies due to tax subsides (such as corn ethanol), then you are doing something really stupid and the artificial job makes us poor. As for the point that ethanol does not have to be made from corn is fine, but the problem is we ARE using corn and that is the whole point and topic of discussion here.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : Wasting resources? Did you really just say that? Like pulling crude oil up out of the ground isn't wasting resources. Crude oil is not replenishable, corn and other plants are. Not to mention that we can find natural ways to grow corn and other crops that won't harm the environment. We can't do that with crude. And I will tell you again. The corn used for ethanol is livestock FEED corn, NOT the corn used for human FOOD. It's already there. Set aside for the feeding of livestock.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
We use steel to make pots to cook food and the idea because steel can rust and is not renewable means we should not use it is beyond stupid on your part. Bio fuel policies are causing children around the world to go hungry and that land resource used for bio fuel in regards to wheat in Europe or corn in the USA is a waste of precious resources. That land is wasted ONLY due to huge tax subsidies. Only feed here is those at the government trough for handouts. These policies are causing starvation.
Albertkallal 10 months ago
@Albertkallal : LMAO.... The sad part is that I've seen pots and pans made from iron that date back to the 1800's. And besides, rust is a natural substance called iron oxide. It happens in nature all the time. Destroying our environment, and waging wars over oil is causing more starvation then growing a natural fuel ever will. Why? Because we would have the power to shift the need at any time. You can't feed starving people crude oil.
screamineagle88 10 months ago
And no that land is NOT set aside for feed it ONLY set aside due to subsidies. I open to a cellulose type of system, but the current system and the current policies are beyond stupid and are insane and are a waste of good land for food. As the world food bank points out these policies are causing starvation of people around the world. What part are you not getting about people starving and wasting good land for food? Exactly why do you love starving people to death?
Albertkallal 10 months ago

At least electric cars are QUIET and don't pollute nearly as much as combustion engine vehicles.
randomlaughingman 2 years ago
I say to hell with Ethanol, we dont need jobs in the US, we dont need farmers, we dont need our own fuel production that hires thousands of workers, we dont need to stop giving 700 billion to Oil companies just in profits during a 4 month period. We need to send all of our dependance overseas and we need to be reliant on everyone else but us. He must have already forgot that gas was as high as 5.00 a gallon in TN after Hurricane Ike. but wait, he doesnt pay for his own gas, its given to him.
PaganEgyptian 3 years ago
This ethanol issue is not about jobs and trade, it is about a brain dead policy. You dont waste good ariable land and use up enough food to feed a family for one year (one tank of ethanol uses enough food to feed a family for 1 year). Tax subsidies alone make this a scam. We are taking about waste and something that makes the nation poorer. Worse is using this corn means that milk, poultry and all kinds of food stuffs will rise in cost. So this ethanol will just cause children to starve.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
I think this is more about the hate of corn alone. Some were saying we could switch up by growing switch grass to make ethanol instead of corn to feed our cars. Screw John Lithgow. We just replaced a corn field that feeds people with a switch grass field to feed the cars. Luckily this issue is forgotton and corn is being grown as before
braneden 2 years ago
It is 15% to get oil to market, but for ethanol it is somewhere between 63% and 115%.
blurglide 3 years ago
It is patently dishonest to say there is a food versus fuel problem. By taking out the carbohydrates from corn to make ethanol, the leftovers could actually be used at least ten different ways to feed fish, livestock, even mushrooms.
Cattle health will benefit by eating DDGS which is closer to what they are supposed to eat.
Feeder corn cannot be eaten raw by humans. For one thing, it's the wrong variety, two, it's GMO corn.
Ethanol, then food (DDGS) is a win - win situation for America
Juliusno1776 3 years ago

Farming is one of the dirtiest industries in the U.S. Why make it any dirtier? Corn ethanol with double green house gases and cause much more air, soil, and water pollution.

@sirhcskoorb: If it took more energy to pump oil than the oil provided, then it would not be a fuel.
I'm all for doing something, but you can't just go on blind emotion and do ANYTHING that feels good. You need to do something that'll help- not hurt.
blurglide 3 years ago
LOL! some of you people need to learn to read a lttle better.
What I say is"It USED TO take more energy to make gas than you could get out of it,so what?"
Look up what Mr. Ford had to say about gas at the time.
Over time we found ways to make gas from crude that made it worth our time.
Ethanol is the same way.
When people find out you don't need to use corn to make ethanol.....well maybe people arn't that smart yet.
sirhcskoorb 3 years ago
The point is, the anti ethanol Big Oil whores like Pimentel are using a double standard for accounting how energy is produced. It does take 15% or more of oil to get it to market, yet they ignore the deficit for Big Oil and cry like little girls about Ethanol having energy expenses, as everything in the real world has.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Hey, pay attention man. It isn't just the Big Oil folks who are anti-ethanol. Most of us treehuggers hate it too-at least corn ethanol. And, Big Oil loves ethanol. What corporations do you think have interest in ethanol???? Read up on BP and the like.
blur880 3 years ago
It use to take more energy to make gas than you could get out of it,so what?
The trouble with you people is you don't seem to unerstand that more and better fuel crops can be grown.
It's not a choice between corn to eat or corn for fuel.
This is a choice between sitting on your asses or letting people like me who can make the car you have right now run on 105 octane E85 get us out of this mess.
sirhcskoorb 3 years ago
>take more energy to make gas than you could get out of it,so what?
Are you nuts? We talking about good corn to make ethanol. How can you sleep at night and say "so what?" You don't care if you using more energy and using good ariable land that could feed the poor? Wasting energy and resources makes everyone more poor and results in less food for starving people. So, lets just adopt a stupid taxation scheme by corn farmers and congress and look the other way? Can you really be this stupid?
Albertkallal 3 years ago
>more and better fuel crops can be grown.

That being said, anybody totally against ethanol has a lot to learn.

Why are you now ragging about Beck not knowing about Brazil when the subject is CLEARY talking about corn based ethanol? It simply is an rotten move and disinformation on your part to cloud this issue. We are taking about corn based system and how stupid it is to waste food and resources. got it?

Ok,I'll tell you but you should already know.
Brazil is as we speek running their cars on E85 or ethanol.
It's made from suger cane and cane is much, much better that corn,I have tryed it myself.
To ferment sugers in to alcohol it's best use something a lot of suger in it.
Suger cane can't in places where cron is grown.
How corn and ethanol came together in the first place is very odd to me.
Maybe it's an old moonshiner's recipe, thats fine but I want to put it my car not drink it.
sirhcskoorb 3 years ago
>It's not a choice between corn to eat or corn for fuel. Oh yes it is! Because it's the land you're wasting that can grow other crops to feed people! Tell me then why can't the land be used to grow good food? Even worse in this case it is GOOD corn! That corn can be used for everything from Poultry to feed for cows that gives us milk. Seen the Large increases in these products of late, it's exactly because of this corn issue. It not really the corn, it is waste of good land + resources anyway.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Wrong!
The crops that make the best fuel crops don;t grow in the same place as corn and is not being used for anything are now.

No, it is not wrong because we ARE talking about CORN here. If there is other crops, then fine, but corn is not one of them you fool! We are talking about corn right now and this corn ethanol is the most complete and brain dead wrong way to make fuel. Please don't do that in the future. corn ethonal is plain stupid. Got it?
Albertkallal 3 years ago
You cannot both call yourself an environmentalist and support crop-based ethanol. Anyone who does is simply uninformed or greedy.
As an environmentalist myself, I think most of us realized from ethanol's first uses in the marketplace that it is most definitely nowhere near what we need to replace gasoline.
In the UK, all agriculture would have to be for fuel ethanol, and the country would have to even IMPORT ethanol to meet its domestic energy needs.
Ethanol = not the answer.
jroy375 3 years ago
growing cattails on marginal land using primary treated sewage can yield 50 billion gallons of ethanol and 100 billion gallons of methane net off of 20 million acres, which is NOT prime farmland, and only comprises 3/4 of one percent of all land in the U.S.
Ethanol can be the answer, it depends on how wisely one designs the process.
Read "Alcohol can be a Gas" and You will understand how the American people have been screwed.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago 2
you seem to know alot. will using ethanol completely replace oil even with the price of feed for chickens, beef, pigs, etc. going sky high, in turn making food of all sorts go up for us? if you think about it, thats like everything thats in the grocery store-milk, eggs, bread, chips, cereal, etc. etc. etc. ......im seeing more bad than good here. not worth it.

Albertkallal 3 years ago
so... if you are so concern, about this subject... you must have "the solution"
joseito989 3 years ago
Of course it takes more energy to produce ethanol than it provides. Everything takes more energy to produce than it provides, It's called the Law of Conservation of Energy. Stupid argument. It costs Brazil $0.83 USD to produce ethanol. Shit is way cheaper than gas and it doesn't pollute like gas does. Since we have vehicles that run off both ethanol and gas it's an easy transition.
KylerKen 3 years ago
Do you actually think people here stupid? Conservation energy does not apply in this case. When you use coal, oil etc then you taking energy that been captured. If you go and scoop up a shovel of coal and dump it in your furnace you get thousands of times of the energy output as what you put in. In the case of corn ethanol(which is the subject here), you're energy inputs are way too high, and it a waste of resources and ariable land that could be used to feed starving children around the world.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Of course it takes more energy to produce ethanol than it produces.
KylerKen 3 years ago
We can't even find a place to plant all the corn needed for ethanol. It would take 97% of the United States JUST for our cars.
Bad idea.
Nuclear energy, tapping into the natural gas pocket beneath us, or maybe all that coal we're sittting on (coal to oil plants) would work.
Not freaking corn.
cheerupemokid943 3 years ago
Simply not true. We could raise 1/3 of our fuel needs on 10% of AG land via Corn and Fodder beets.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
WTF? What the hell does that mean? I don't speak liberal.
cheerupemokid943 3 years ago
The poor will improve their lot by eating better, getting more protein in their diet.
Making Ethanol from fermentation gives lots of leftovers for feed or fertilizer for the next crop. Exporting DDGS can allow people to eat
pounds of protein for pennies if they would make mushrooms out of it first.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
What the heck, left over's? So, let's just ignore the huge waste of land, and ignore the huge tax grab by these people? Man, what gives with people like you? It is a stupid idea. If you want people to improve their diets then let's grow some better food and not waste that land on something stupid like corn ethanol. This insane policy is causing basic food costs to rise. We not talking about a cellulose process here, we talking about the CURRENT use of good land to grow corn that can better used.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Inflation's due to the War on some Terrorists, same as Vietnam. Speculators are jumping on anything but Dollar. Nothing to do with Ethanol! Farmers planted 19 million more acres than last yr. only used 11 million for Ethanol.
If it weren't for WAR inflation, corn should have dropped in price.
Any hot dog cart pusher has a greater grasp on economics than the people who believe this article You quote from.
IMF article is unpublished, authors couldn't stand scrutiny of having to provide sources.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
It would be quite amazing that all the countries around the world burning foodstuffs in cars it not having an effect on food prices. The world bank report (not imf) will be released soon, and it's conclusions makes a lot of sense. It don't take much of a brain to see why this is a problem and is causing strain on the food system. We can wait until the report is officially released, but I have little doubts the conclusions of the report will remain on solid grounds.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
July 05, 2008 Biofuels behind food price hikes: Biofuels have caused world food prices to increase by 75 percent according to an unpublished World Bank report published in The Guardian newspaper on Friday. Senior World Bank economist assessed that increased demand from India and China has not been the cause of rising food prices. "Rapid income growth in developing countries has not led to large increases in global grain consumption and was not a major factor for the large price increases,"
Albertkallal 3 years ago
"Without the increase in biofuels, global wheat and maize stocks would not have declined appreciably and price increases due to other factors would have been moderate," the report said. It added that the drive for biofuels has distorted food markets by diverting grain away from food for fuel, encouraging farmers to set aside land for its production, and sparked financial speculation on grains. Higher energy and fertilizer prices accounted for an increase of only 15 percent
Albertkallal 3 years ago
The basket of food prices examined in the study rose by 140 percent between 2002 and this February," The Guardian said. "The report estimates that higher energy and fertilizer prices accounted for an increase of only 15 percent, while biofuels have been responsible for a 75 percent jump over that period."
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Our contribution regarding greenhouse gases as carbon dioxide amounts to 0.43 of 9-27 % of the total greenhouse effect. If globally introduced, it will mean a 3% there off.
Hundreds of millions of tons of food crops are burned while prices are rising.
And the poor will suffer the first.
A recipe for disaster.
And they got already a long list concerning this kind of ludicrous ideas.

Do You agree if Subsidy is wrong for Ethanol, then it should also not be allowed for Big Oil?
IOW, kill the 61 cent subsidy to Ethanol AND the $5.65 Subsidy Big Oil gets? Dump them both.
All I need is a "Yes" or a "No"
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Yes, if this is a stupid subsidy for oil then lets get rid of it.. This is not a bipolar argument here that any support is bad. Bad subsidies are bad and good subsidies are good. So if the oil subsidy is bad then yes I agree with you lets get rid of it. It is not an all or nothing for every case it is a case by case in which we use our brains.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Oh Albert!
Agreed?
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
You can't have this argument both ways. Telling me that oil gets huge subsides for oil, and beck is against ethanol. Being against ethanol CLEARY means one is against the subsides that allow this stupid system to function (hypocrisy of you to spin this as support of oil). As for removing subsidies, yes, you darn right I agree with you on removing subsides for ethanol. Socialism is socialism, and the idea that somehow national socialism is any different is another silly argument on your part

Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Yes, bet your boots we will let the readers decide. Thank goodness we don't have to just listen to the liberal mainstream press that effects people with weak minds. The fact is we need to stand up to this bull crap from these do good socialists pushing a green agenda that is a stupid waste of land. Basic food prices are being effected by these terrible policies. When I see people like you trying to defend this type of policy, it clear how the National Socialists came to power in Europe in WWII
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Just as Beck's Wall St. Guest is about to expand on opening the 40 million acre farm land reserve that pays Farmers not to farm Beck shuts him up, lest we realize there is plenty of land to grow things on.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Sure there's plenty of land to grow things on, but is not unlimited resources and fuel to make that land useable. Furthermore your logic does not justify stupid use of land. Stupid use of land is called stupid use of land, why you standing here and promoting and telling everybody that we should be stupid and do stupid things with our land? Just because we have additional land line around doesn't mean that we also have to throw are brains out and become stupid all of sudden.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
People the world over can buy DDGS worth perhaps 7 cents a pound, and ship it anywhere and grow mushrooms or raise fish at their end.
Since DDGS is 18 lbs rather than 56 lbs of the original corn bushel, thus concentrated is less $ to ship, savings helps people feed even more people all over earth.
People need protein and fat, which DDGS is.
People don't need carbs, that is already in too much supply. Those carbs make ethanol so we don't need Neocons, Beck, or middle east Oil, or War.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
In case you hadn't noticed, corn feed is used for just about everything in the food chain and can even effect the price of milk. Worse yet, is why are you making the insane assumption we have to grow corn on that land? I can't believe you're making an argument as to the fact that we're growing something stupid on this land, therefore we should use that land in a stupid fashion, what kind of insane logic is that?
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Many places in the USA can only grow a few grains like corn. You are not going to grow Broccoli unless You can sell it. That's the problem.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Then use it for feed, and not cars. You still make ZERO arguments as to why we should be wasting these resources for cars in place of food. it makes no sense...none, zero...nada...
Albertkallal 3 years ago
You just don't understand, do You?
Removing the Carbs from corn just makes what is left over better for cows to eat. True, there is not as much gain per acre, but farmers also net the income from ethanol as well, getting back to a more sound footing finance wise.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Feeder corn is only good for: Livestock, fish, fowl, or Ethanol.
Human corn is one percent of the US corn crop.
Farmers planted 18+ million extra acres last year to corn but ethanol used 11 million acres.
The increase in prices are due to the inflation as a result of the War on Terror.
We defend/occupy Iraq so oil won't ship out in quantity.
Got it?
Beck/Big Oil are Lying as to why corn is going up and his Bush buddies are laughing all the way to the bank.
Big Oil is afraid of Ethanol.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
It not the corn you fool, it is the fact that the land COULD BE BETTER used to produce food. It is just pure insane on your part to stand here and tell me because the crop is not that great for humans, then that is a excuse to waste the land and resources on something stupid such as corn ethanol? It not the corn you idiot, it the fact that your wasting all the fuel, water, fertilizer and labor on land that can be use to feed starving children by using that land for BETTER use. Got it you fool!
Albertkallal 3 years ago
You aren't a farmer who has FEW choices to grow something that can be marketed.
In many places in the US, the only thing in a small town is a grain elevator to buy corn, or soy, barley etc.
Until Ethanol, there weren't options to add value to a farmers product. Options like feeding the leftovers to make mushrooms, etc. Add huge value to a farmer's income, or a small town operator who has the moxie to take some shipping containers and grow mushrooms for food and profit. No one need starve.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Right, but with without all those subsides this would not be a viable product or choice for these farmers. The fact of the matter is we are using tractors, fuel, labor and good ariable land that can be used to use grow good food instead of burning it our cars. What exactly a part of the English language don't you understand about the stupidity of this?
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Keep name calling and avoiding good news. It makes You look SO smart.
I bet You listen to Glen Beck every day?
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
There is a limit to the stupidity you pushing here. You've completely ignored the issues, you completely intellectually failed to point out why we should not be using that land for better uses to feed the starving children around the world. It just amazes me that you can stand here and accept policies that will starve people around the world, and adopt policies that is just so unbelievably wasteful of the land and resources that need to be used for growing food.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
In 2007, 11 million acres of corn that went into Ethanol generated enough distillation leftovers, DDGS to feed mushrooms or fish to make enough protein, 10 to 12 million tons worth. That is enough protein to keep 307 million people in 1.5 lbs a week of fish or mushrooms for a year. Far better than 1 million lbs of beef, only enough for 1/10 as many people. DDGS weighs 1/3 of raw corn. Easier to ship more places on earth.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Who is this idiot? Ethanol from corn isnt good but Ethanol from sugar cane is. Check your facts again mister. Only the US use corn ethanol...
WinkelHoof 3 years ago
We talking about corn ethanol, and it was stated as such. Just because you not listened is no reason for you to try and sugar coat this craziness. As stated, burning this corn food in cars is a STUPID. I can't imagine anyone trying to debate, or sweetie coat this stupid idea of using corn in a car. One tank of ethanol in a SUV equal to the food that can feed a person FOR ONE WHOLE year. Children will starve because of this idea. There is stupid, and then there is insane...this is insane!!
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Ten bushels of yellow corn will not feed a person for a year. It is a lie.
No one eats Cattle feeder corn.
10 Bushels will make 28 gallons of ethanol we need and 180 lbs of protein/fat from DDGS via mushrooms that third world people need. Now, does a poor person have $15 to $20 to buy two sacks of DDGS to make $300 worth of Mushrooms or Tilapia?
Maybe We shouldn't have sent out the Economic Hit men to impoverish the world, for it looks like we need others in order to trade and prosper.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
It takes more energy to make ethanol than it produces? Kinda like 2.8 gallons of ethanol for every bushel of corn. I don't think so.
spudbubba 3 years ago 3
Diversification of the fuel supply is crucial. Ethanol offers a alternative to oil which reduces oil demand which will eventually with enough diversification reduce ability of oil producers to control our economy, etc. Imagine going to the grocery store and only being able to buy one kind of food and it was produced in the Middle East?
vmp777777 3 years ago
Diversification of energy supplies is a great goal and everybody wants that. The brain dead idea of ethanol is simply the worst possible thing we could ever invented. So you mean let's have children around the world starve? Ethanol is not a energy efficient process, and the only reason why we continue to do it is because of all the money grubbing pigs at the trough of tax subsidies. It is simply a money scam right now. Alternate fuels is great but not this one. Shame on you for supporting this.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
We are stuck with Genetically engineered food. The european union doesnt buy it from us anymore because of mandatory labeling.
This was a big client. We are turning that food into Ethanol instead of stopping using stupid GMOs. That my friend, started the hole ethanol " hype ." Who is behind GMOs Monsanto. Monsanto and their lobby, are responsible for the ethanol shit, and the the food crisis right now.You are right man, Ethanol IS fucking shit, 1.4 petrol barrel= 1 ethanol barrel !!!???!??!??!?
xzistpo 3 years ago
The truth is that Ethanol from corn is 1.3 to 1.7 times more energy positive.
The corn is negative argument is a 30 year old lie from a Cornell Graduate with MOBIL money in his back pocket.
GMO is another problem. It must be fixed, if it can be. Farmers were lied to about GMO. It is dangerous, since it has been proved those inserted genes can jump to the bugs in Your gut. Someday Monsanto will be broke from lawsuits IMO, but the problem will be with us perhaps forever.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Please keep on telling people, you are changing things, slowly but surely.
Even if there are assholes telling you to shut up, don't.
xzistpo 3 years ago
So you are saying children around the world starting starving since the introduction of ethanol as a fuel? Starvation in third world countries has nothing to do with ethanol and more to do with repressive governments, hapless charity organizations and economic ignorance. Ethanol is no more the cause of starving children than any other fuel supply. Farmers have shifted their production to meet demand. If you want to prevent starvation around the world then encourage economic development.
vmp777777 3 years ago
I agree.
Or being forced to only buy 3.2 beer during daylight hours when You know stronger beer or wine is across a State Line and your Legislature Imagines to Know what is best for You.
You know how silly that would look!
Oh, wait a minute, that does happen in the land of the ,,,,,
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Never burn your food!! This is crazy!
MinuteMan9911 4 years ago
Yellow corn isn't human food. You can take the left overs from 11 million acres of corn ethanol and make mushrooms on a pound for pound basis and that 7 cent pound of DDGS will make a pound of mushroom worth $2 to $7
Or Tilapia or Catfish for 70 to 80% feed conversion rate.
No One starves since MORE protein can be made from leftovers, it just won't all be bacon or beef.
"Alcohol can be a gas" a great way to learn how to get into positive change Beck won't tell U about. tinyurl com/56rrda
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
That land could be used for growing food. To state that the land is being used for crap that humans don't eat is stupid. Water, fertilizer, and fuel in the tractors could be used for growing food to feed starving children around the word. Really, a drunken rodeo clown knows that using food (corn) in cars is downright stupid. That land could be use for growing wheat to feed people. There is absolute ZERO case for corn ethanol, and it simply a huge waste of resources that could be better used.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Simple facts:
1. Not Your land.
2. A bushel, 56 lbs, of which only the carbs make ethanol 2.5 gallons x $2.50 = $6.25 x 125 B = $781 acre
3. 18 lbs of protein and fat are left over to feed fish or mushrooms that has a commercial value of between $36.00 and $126 a bushel.
4. A bushel of feed makes much more money on mushrooms or fish. Up to 100x the feed value.
5. Low end, $36 x 125 B = $4,500 retail mushrooms or fish.
+ $781 Ethanol = $5,281 an acre retail.
6. That's Food
7. Beck Lies
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
>1. Not your land.
no, but it is the people's tax dollars at work, and it simply corruption and bad environmentalism that makes this work
Albertkallal 3 years ago
Then address the fact that Big Oil gets eleven times more subsidy than Ethanol gets. Beck won't because he is dishonest.
Lets do away with all subsidies!
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
Beck NEVER EVER made a statement as to who gets the subsidies. I don't give one hoot if it is oil, or who ever. It is the peoples tax dollars (end of argument). It still a stupid policy, and one that driven by politicians trying to justify the policy of being green. If Beck is saying this insane and should be stopped, then logic dictates that the oil companies would loose their subsides. So, you silly attempt to paint Beck as pandering to the oil companies is a laughable hollow argument.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
That land must be paid for and there are only so many choices a farmer has to grow things!
Feeder Corn in USA is dryland. not irrigated.
Fertilizer runoff is a problem, but raising fish can result in much nutrients being returned to the land if raised close by, lowering the fertilizer bill of farmers.
Using Permaculture (dot com) to employ healthier ways to grow corn and other crops is a better long term way to live. Just as is using Ethanol that pollutes 98% less than gasoline
Juliusno1776 3 years ago
You are only burning the starch in corn which people and cattle don't need. There is enough leftovers to feed fish and make protein for about 2 billion people off of 80 million acres of corn.
Juliusno1776 3 years ago 6
This is using quality land that could be used to feed starving children. The World Bank organization just stated that current HUGE food increases are due to the stupid ethanol. We are not just using the starch in that corn. That is good useable food we burning, not cellulose. They are simply distilling good corn that could be better used. And that land could BETTER used for food to feed people. Don't give me crap about only using the starch, that not what we doing nor what we are talking about.
Albertkallal 3 years ago
The World Bank in their You Tube release of an unpublished article points out corn only went up a it over 30% last year while wheat and other things went up 70 to 110 %
******************************************
There are enough leftovers in 80 million acres of corn to feed 2 billion people their daily protein needs. 3 Billion people if we also planted the 40 million acre land conservation bank that pays farmers not to farm.
