  • that's sort of what I would have thought, but I lived with a breeder this summer and it really helps the pups to have us involved a little bit. For example, mom occasionally can cut the cord too small and the puppy can start bleeding (happened this summer) so it helps to have us step in as soon as the puppy drops to make sure the pups are okay, tie off the cord, etc. Mom gets to lick them and nurse them within a couple mins though and she gets to eat the placenta as nature intended.

  • You are right in the fact in nature there would be no intervention, it would purely be down to Mum. The downside is that leaving it to nature, Mum would abandon the weaker pups and save her milk for the 3 or 4 strongest pups.
