Does anyone have any idea what the time signature for this dance was, I'm studying it for an exam and I can't work it out? Much appreciated if anyone could answer.
They didn't rehearse the part where they jumped over each other and landed in the splits coming down the steps. That was done in one take without a rehearsal.
You know they didn't even rehearse? They went straight to filming and got it done. But then one of the brothers came up of the epic-splits-slide-ending, so they filmed it again. :]
To Hamhark98. Point taken, yes no doubt racism ruled the day then. But my point was I go to YouTube mainly as a diversion, an escape from the stress and crap of the day. I guess I just didnt want to hear about racism of the time because its done and over with. And its not my fault. Some people act as if I owe them something because of things past. I am NOT saying you are one of those. But yes I hear where you're coming from. We all know.
there was no editing software back then which means this is all one take. these mother fuckers did the splits 20+ times without batting a god damn eye. seriously the most impressive thing I've ever seen.
There were no special effects for this movie. Lord have mercy...people are too technicals these days. Back then, people worked their ASS OFF. And had the broken hips, blisters and feet to prove it!
I am officially astonished; why were these fantastic ARTISTS never given the credit they deserved???I will never understand this world. I know attitudes were different towards ethnic groups in those days, but why were people so color blinded as to not see the sheer artistry and amazing agility these boys had? The purpose of dance is to surprise, amaze and delight, no matter what colour or creed.
These gentlemen are literally risking their lives in hopes that they could somehow win our approval. That's how hard life was for these guys. Such a performance mastery. Long live the Nicholas Brothers...
WHY ARE YOU IDIOTS TALKING ABOUT RACSISM ON THIS POST? It's a great dance number, okay? Would it be okay if we just enjoy the dancing? Not for one minute while viewing this did race even cross my mind. Not once. Then all of a sudden I see this crap in the comments. Some of you people are just pathetic. It must be a miserable life for you.
@Gepetto48 Why? Because they had to work their asses off and create mind boggling routines like that to even get a moment of screen time when they should have been the stars of their own tv show, theatre production and movies. Thats why.
Its because of racisim at the time that they weren't nearly as successful as they should have been. And thats a crime.
Erinnert mich irgendwie an Eleonore Powells ♥♥ Sensation of 1945. Stormy Weather mit den Nicholas Brothers ♥ wurde aber schon 1943 gedreht. Allen den dieses Video gefällt, werden Eleonore Powells ♥♥ Sensation of 1945 lieben. Kann ich nur empfehlen...
Can't imagine any dance number being better than this! The Nicholas Brothers were gorgeous, elegant, smooth, hyper-athletic--and at the end of this outrageous dance number, not a hair is out of place--oh bring back this glamour!
I mean what did I just see?, how? I can't believe that two humans can do "ALL" of this and back in the day? listen up dancers of today, hang you heads in shame. Oh,they entertained us so well, and they didn't have to put not one bump or grime in the routine OR TAKE OFF ANY CLOTHES and this routine is still entertaining us 75 yrs. later, now that's TALENT!!!!!!!!
@jerri1950 Well you are just full of gross generalizations. I hate people who are like "Dancers/Singers/whatever today are no where near as good as back then!", while the Nicholas Brothers were exceptional and still are, there are plenty of performers today who are just as talented. And how is a routine being sexual a bad thing? It's not, art changes with the times. Now get off your high horse.
@kevkevshields i still stand by my original comment to the FULLEST,I would pay good money to see real talent of this kind today,BUT it just ain't around and I mean "NOWHERE"
As if the rest of the movie were not sufficiently crammed with talent, in the last reel or two Cab Calloway comes in and completely steals the show. And then the Nicholas Brothers come in and completely steal the show from him! It just breaks your heart to think how many great movies could have been built completely around all of these unbelievably gifted and hard-working geniuses, if not for the racism of the time. Thank goodness we at least have a handful of movies and scenes like this.
damn straight. we still got some way to go, and the best way to fight racism and such nonsense is to keep on dancing, keep on singing, keep on writing, keep on filming, keep on teaching...you get the idea.
@Fontdalfondo "if not for the racism of the time". You're kidding right? I got news for you racism hasn't gone anywhere. In fact it's more racist today than it ever was and always will be as long as this nation exist. This is America and that's what this nation stands for and nothing else. Nuff siad.
Wow, knee-jerk much? He's saying that these men weren't given the attention they deserve because at the time the industry wouldn't put African Americans in leading roles. Of course there's still racism but not in this one very particular instance. But please strawman up his post and make yourself seem like a bleeding heart, you asshole.
@MrTizzie Why would you call me an asshole LoL. Did I lie?? You comment " Of course there's still racism". Well isn't that what I said. I wasn't accusing the initial post I commented on of racism. My total lack of coordination not withstanding, my heart would have exploded fifteen seconds into even attempting this. More impressive that any special effect or CG set piece. Absolutely breathtaking.
My little girl just watched this five times in a row, I think she's putting the moves to memory. I have told her that we don't dance on the tables in the house, but otherwise she can go for it.
este video yo lo vi ase mucho (cuando era niña) en la tele y grasias a el me isa una fasionada a el tap adtualmente inicie clases de tap ase un mes y el encontrar este video me a inspirado mucho
I've been looking for this for years - since I saw a clip on a TV special. I've raved about it, from memory, and here it is just as jaw-dropping as ever. I'm pretty sure the TV show said this was ONE TAKE - at least the sequence leapfrogging down the six steps. Astaire said it was the best ever on film and I have to agree. Stunning. Thanks so much for posting this!
Fayard: "Goddammit Harold you missed a step. Thats it, we're doing it all over AGAIN, right from the TOP, put your goddamn shoes back on and get on that table"
Just amazing! Another the fun thing about this clip is to watch the way Cab Calloway walks off behind the Nicholas Brothers doing his "jive finger walk". So cool!
The only other dancer I can think of with that much grace, smooth movement and sheer fluid translation of dance into style that hums rhythm is Fred Astaire. He didn't do the splits as far as I know but he, like them danced even when he was only walking!
I showed this video to my grandchildren and I asked them if they could do that.
In turn they said no maw maw. That's the name they call me. I always try to inspire not only in my children, but my grandchildren aswell the affect the Nicholas Brothers had upon us! They call me corney and old fashioned, yet and still they don't even realise the effect these phenominal men have on our culture!
THE BEST TAP DANCING PERFORMANCE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! THEY WERE SO SMOOTH AND ON THEIR TOES....THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL TRUE TALENT... AND THOSE 18 DISLIKES YOU MUST NOT KNOW WHAT REAL TALENT IS!!!
How many takes did they do in the movie to perfect this scene? These were not men,, but aliens from outer space come to show mere mortals what real dance moves are like... Wow!
Gregory Hines once said that if a film was ever made about the Nicholas Brothers, the dance sequences would have to be computer generated, no one alive could duplicate them.
I have goose bumps everytime I watch this... simply put they are amazing! They exude confidence, agility and originality... superb! You cannot help but look and be amazed.
I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of tap and while I'm 100% certain these are the top tap dancers of their generation (and perhaps other generations) I absolutely did not enjoy watching the repeated splitz action. It was too much. It wasn't entertaining for me just made me cringe. IMO Jess Le Protto is just as good and if he's not there yet - he will be.
Ladies and Gentleman, the immortal Cab Calloway! I didn't realize it was him the first time watching this. 3 Legends of Entertainment onscreen together.
I can't be sure, but I seem to remember reading that the Nicholas Brothers, in old age, ended up pretty severely disabled (ruined tendons in their legs) from doing all those splits. Can anyone confirm this?
Either way, they were utter, absolute geniuses, and we're blessed to have these clips to reminds us of how magnificent they were.
Damage to the knackers whatever their colour must be a consideration. I remember being amazed by the sheer athleticism of this clip when I saw it as a nipper. Even then I worried about the guys' nuts. I think Fred Astaire was right though. Brilliant.

Either way, they were utter, absolute geniuses, and we're blessed to have these clips to reminds us of how magnificent they were.

just the staircase part was enough for Fred Astaire to praise them. I wonder if he tried to do that....

Damage to the knackers whatever their colour must be a consideration. I remember being amazed by the sheer athleticism of this clip when I saw it as a nipper. Even then I worried about the guys' nuts. I think Fred Astaire was right though. Brilliant.

if I did splits down a staircase, I wouldn't be smiling at the bottom. That's skill.
