@ourlucidream Mackaye called it shit, but only the term. He was a roadie for Rites of Spring because he liked the music so much. "If Minor Threat was hardcore, then Rites of Spring, with its altered focus, was emotional hardcore or emocore." It's a simple genre title, nothing more, and it perfectly explained the music. Emo isn't only singing about girls btw. It's much more complex than that. People really hate the term emo nowadays because we have Warped Tour and shit like that.
why wouldn't it be considered emo, its about emotions. particularily emotions about girls who aren't with you anymore. I'm pretty sure thats exactly what emo is.
or are you confusing emo with this new screamo/goth fusion shit that people call emo these days
i know its about emotions, as is a lot of music that doesnt fall into the emo category. i think "emo" just has a bad connotation and i dont want the get up kids associated with that
They dont want themselves associated with it. Its a corporate term for music. Even back in the 80's when it first surfaced Ian Mackaye called it a load of shit.
Also tharun4; Metallica has made songs about girls-are they emo?
yea but everything thats emo has another category like pop punk, indie, alternative, dance, hardcore. so nothing is just Emo, there's always something else
one of my fav get up kids songs....PLEASE GET BACK TOGETHER!!! all of the new punk/emo bands....not even close!!! everything now is crap...GET UP KIDS HELP!!!
Sorry... but you don't have to be a cry baby. Did it ever occur that I was just saying that the album was released so long ago, and that my point was it was such a good album that people are still just discovering it, and that its funny also that it has already been 9 goddamn years since the release, meaning it is crazy how time flies. Don't be so defensive.

well I think all 'emo' music is always associated with depressive kids having their hair dyed black and being desperate and sitting in a corner etc.
at least the modern mainstream-like emo has such an image...self destruction as an important part of growing up and so on^^
and the modern emo also has to do with a certain style, so its more mainstream and all about fashion etc...

Blink makes a totally different type of music. The Get up Kids can't be rivaled by the likes of them.

Ummmm.
So?
I would have been 6 9 years ago.
I'm tired of people acting so "holier than thou" about music.
" Oh yeah? I've liked this song for a longer period of time, I must be awesome"
It's a goddamn song.
I wasn't trying to show off my saying that I liked it three years ago. I was just saying it. Now you're the one acting like a jackass.
