  • My band played this today in our concert. Beautiful. I love laying the flute to it :)

  • i just recently listened to the actual song with the words its just as pretty as the instrumental....my band and i are preforming this for a festival coming up

  • @live2bass haha yeah. Were playing this and i have that part (i play clarinet) i didnt notice it until one day our band director stopped and made us play that part by ourselves, and then everybody started singing it! Haha. Also at the end, the trumpets have a 2 quarter notes and then the clarinets and then the trombones (you have to listen really carefully, its in that long chord) and then the tubas and bass clarinets have something that sounds like theyre saying "aaaaaaamen" its awesome.

  • Williamstown was going to play this but we ended up not playing it but if we would have played it I would have had the sax-flute solo.

  • this is very beautiful, i wish my band could play it, but we suck, so we would create bad memories of this song. :(

    p.s.: im second chair flute

  • We just got this song for band and i absolutely love it

  • @tollulu same here x))

    its such a beautiful song!!

  • Our band has very talented players and makes this song sound amazing. A euphonium plays all of the horn parts. Quite different actually.

  • flutes on this part is beautiful.....including the small solos, im playing this for my wind ensemble class and where not sure if were gonna play it for nationals this year but i realllly want to!

  • lol whats a jackalope doing in the desert? X)

  • awesome sound quality btw :)

  • We are playing this for our jr high band concert Not that pretty yet lol

  • my highschools wind ensemble played this last year...i still continue to play it almost everyday...it was the last song that i played to my grandfather a week before he died...i cry everytime i hear it or play it but it brings back so many great memories

  • Does anyone else notice the "allusion" to the Battle Hymn of the Republic ("glory, glory, hallelujah") at 3:45-3:51 in the harmony part? I love that!

  • Ah This song is so amazingly beautiful <3

We played this in Last Years Heritage Festival along side with Sempe Fidelis and Toccata for Band. But in this song I played the 3rd part in the Echoing part but now since I moved up to first chair, if we ever do play this again I'll play first :D

  • This song is amazing. It makes me cry. When my band played it, it was so fun to play. You have to really get into the song to make it sound right, put feeling into the music. I play the flute btw:) Thumbs up for flutes!!

  • this is breathtakingly beautiful - the song and the pictures that jamesg1985 used in this video.

  • @smokey651

It's not technically advanced--any middle schooler's fingers and mouths could handle it. It just requires musical maturity, and a serious middle school band could certainly do this piece justice.

  • @padfoot1001

I have a hard time believing even a serious middle school band has the maturity for this.

  • My Middle school band played this song with pirates of the caribbean medley and grand march, and we got second place in competition with like a score of 92. anyway, this became my favorite piece right after it was introduced to us. I wanna do this song next year in highschool :) oh and trumpets forever xD

  • i have to do the intro duet to this song : /

  • @Wher3Wuzi wasn't it with saxes and french horn?

  • @Wher3Wuzi I got the baritone part in the begging up to 12 then the other baritones come in ...

  • @Wher3Wuzi I do to I play baritone bc i play up to 12 then the other baritones come in

  • my school's symphony only touched this song, i want to play it again!

  • Our High School is playing this for our concert along with Purgitorio which i got to say both these songs are amazing

  • My highschool's (John A Ferguson) wind essemble played this during the Heritage Festival this year in Anaheim California, I had to play the part 2 in the trio, xD Yea by the way we got the Gold 1st Medal, and Prejudice Trophy and Outstanding band and the invitation to Carnegie Hall :D I was so happy <3

  • Whenever we play this in band, I ALWAYS get the chills during the climax when I hear the tenor saxes behind me play. It's very touching(:

  • @luckyslimester I play the tenor sax part in this song, and I too get the chills when I play this song!

  • the dynamics is hard to play in this song

  • this is such a good song! i <3 it

  • this song is so amazing and yet one of the hardest pieces composed

  • Go ELP, all the way ya'll! <3

  • Nice, this song is best without any of the folk lyrics. It expresses enough without them, with them, it seems to limit itself.

  • i had the lead french horn part last year when we played this at my high school. nearly made me tear up when we performed

  • someone died right before playing this with his high school band is what my band director told me.... its only a better reason why this song is so beautiful...T-T

  • I have the 2nd part in the flute trio! We are playing this in our band now. This helped me to better understand where my part fits in..thanks!

  • @ThatBrunetteChick is this seleste ?

  • played this last year in all district band and my high schools band. absolutly amazing...

  • My favorite part is 2:54-3:16 [: The way it Echo's :D

  • @garciav74 its one of the hardest part to play because you really have to get into it and not over power the other instrument... but its was my favorite part to play and its still my favorite part of the song too

  • @garciav74 thats because its 3 different flute players. its a duet. i played the second part in my high school band.

  • I played 2nd Clarinet back in '05. I recently went through my sheet music from high school, and I think I'm going to use this for my wedding song to walk down the aisle to.

  • I love this song. We played it in band, I got to do the first flute part in the trio.

    It's such a beautiful song!

This is a good version of it.

  • We are preforming this two weeks from today!!

  • :) we def played this.

    i love it.

    :)

  • this is all i heard during the sat last saturday

  • it is truly a great song but I am not a big fan from a trombone player's view because we hardly play.

  • very nice

  • You guys did great! @ 2:55 when the flutes have the three different parts that echo each other is what I am currently struggling with in my band. Now I know that it does sound beautiful but when I play it I feel like because we are not all together the crowd will think a couple of us are lost but thats not it at all. Thank you!

  • Hehe our school band is playing this song right now xD it's really easy, in my opinion, but it sounds nice =)

  • beautiful i love this song

  • nice. We're learning this now for my school band...

  • all time favorite concert band song.

gives me the chills every single time<3

  • Amazing everytime I hear it, the best part to me is when the melody of Battle Hymn is played in the Clarinet section(The part that I played myself when my own band played) truly truly amazing.

  • that alto sax solo in the middle was amazing

  • holy crap! the horns were actually in tune on that low F at the beginning! bravo!

  • love when the horns come in at the end and then the last trumpet solo. gives me goosebumps!

  • ha, our band played this tonight...we've got the best band in VA...not kidding...that's what the director said...

  • ours is the best in wa state. that's what the trophey's said lol sorry...

  • lol we played and it sounds exactly like this and we're only middle skoolers oh yea

    representin south pointe middle school

  • who r u

  • Ahhh!!! I love this song! My band is playing it! I play flute, but you just can't beat the alto part in this. There's a great alto player in our band... Ahh!!! So good!

  • we're playin this at our festival at TN Tech next week. i just about cry everytime i hear it. i just imagine the union soldier comin home from the war, over the top of the mountain and seein the river and his home and his family and being reunited with them.

  • Southern song.... would've been a confederate soldier.... coming home to a home burned to the ground by General Sherman and the union army...

  • why else would the clarinets be playing battle hymn of the republic?

  • Shermans March to the SEA, went through georgia and the carolinas. not virginia. At the time Shenandoah became a part of West Virginia when they pulled away from Virginia in 1863 and it was a Union State, therefore being a union soldier.

  • lol, my band has had this piece since like october and we have never tried it. The trumpets own!!!!

  • heck yea the director at my school hates us cuz we r trumpets, and we mess around

  • We mess around too and it's funny when our director gets pissed. You wind ensemble?

  • VERY beautiful! Fantastic intonation, superb tuning, excellent dynamics, and just a plain pleasure to listen to!!!!

  • lol our trumpets always have trouble with their cues. I don't know why, they're so easy and it's not like our trumpets are bad players either. I wanna poke them in the head and scream FOCUS...:)

  • I LOVE PLAYING THIS IN BAND! I PLAY SAD :P :D I LOVE THE SOLO (i play it when the person who does isnt there :D that makes me feel special XD) this song is like high school lvl and im in grade 8 playing first with grade tens ( another bonus :DD

  • every instrument sounds so good. they're in tune and come together beautifully. the woodwinds sound amazing. Nice.

  • my high school wind ensenble is working on this song for large group contest. we sound pretty good, but the musicality is bringing us down. i think that the trumpets in our band should learn about a big thing called DYNAMICS!

but this group did quite well. i really liked it :)

  • i play clarinet in my wind ensemble. haha i sort of forgot to mention that...

  • this peace of music isgreat. the 1st trumpet in this tune is ok but the rest arent intune with him. i love this song especialy the flute quartett.

  • i used to play the big trombone part for this song

  • This song is so beautiful. I have 2nd clarinet, and every time I have a rest I always close my eyes and just listen to the rest of the band play. I love playing it. We sound really pretty in this song. If only all our trumpets and clarinets would play. None of our third trumpets or clarinets ever even try. It gets on my nerves cause if they did we'd sound even more amazing.

  • We sight-read this tune today! It's such a great piece! I play first alto, and I had the solo. It's not as amazing as Grainger's Irish Tune, Whitacre's Sleep, or Hazo's In Heaven's Air, but it's up there! :)

  • I love this piece. We're playing it at a concert we're playing with the University of Delaware. I'm playing the flute solo and my sister is playing the saxophone solo!! I'm so excited!!

By the way, the flute trio in this video is amazing!!!

  • I have second trumpet in this. I don't think I'd be able to really have control of my tone if I had first. hah...

The piece would probably sound ugly.

  • i'm playing this 2nd trombone. our part's boring but i still love this piece :D

  • that trumpets vibrato is totally out of control, wrong for the song. This is a great piece though.

  • i played this in the 8th grade. first trumpet. i loved the muted part. i loved the whole song

  • i play 1st trumpet in this..it almost makes me cry

  • i have first trumpet as well. this song gets to you, well wen me and a few of my friends do it. cuz the rest of my band sucks. lol

  • our school band is playing this 4 spring concert (pope john 23 reg. nj)

  • i have 3rd clarinet in this song

  • i've had first horn twice... i love it!!!!

  • I play the 3rd trombone part in this song, and I really enjoy just listening to the majesty that this song envokes

  • Now, I mean no offense to any choir people... I love the choir version, it's beautiful, but there's just something about an instrument that warms me <3

  • I love the vibrato of the flutes. Only our first flute can do it and make it sound great, so our three-part solo sounds like crap. I have the bottom of the three. :]

  • i love playing with vibrato, i have the top out of the three. =]

  • SOMEONE should put the air force band playing this on youtube. its amazing.

  • the trumpets sound like they're pinching...

  • wait... where's the part of the woodwind quintet?

  • ok, what difference does it make to this person's video if you band has better flutes?

    Totally unnecessary.

Anyway, I thought it was lovely. I really liked the flute-sax duet. They blended nicely. :)

  • we played this last year

    LOVED IT

i had the bottom part in the 3 part solo towards the end

    btw,

the flutes in our band are so mch better than these, especially the 1st solo

  • what school r u frm cause theres a lot of good bands maybe i could see a field show

  • do u play euphonium in marching band too

  • i go to Calera High, check out my page for our shows and i play piccolo and flute

  • Haha I suppose .... :-(...But i have a preference heh. I begged my teacher to let us play this in highschool, never quite got there. Very disappointed.

  • i so love this song and who it is written by both euphonium and baritone are awesum (:

  • this song has a good part for the baritone yea i play that woot woot go baritone!!

  • ...Euphonium kicks baritone's ass any day lol

  • i play both so it doesnt really matter (:

  • Well in that case. I mainly play Euphonium, so it DOES matter....it kicks ass lol.

  • we're playing this in band and my band teacher told us it was written for a middle school french hornist who died and i play the french horn so this song really touches me (ya i know that it sounds cheesey but....) this is my favorite song we play in band!

  • i so agree with u on this one

  • love this song sounds good

  • just my opinion because i am very picky, but i think the french horns sound a bit to brassy at a few parts. the attacks are a bit harsh for my taste. but i know thats very picky. over all, great job i liked it

  • I'm not sure I like how all of this is played, but I love this arrangement!!!

  • the song is so soft like a lulliby or however u spell it in my school the clarinet have a 6 measure solo^.^but love the sounds on this one

  • i played this song. the saxophone/flute solo had too much saxophone so it was hard to hear the flute, but the flute trio soli was pretty good.

  • I loved playing this song, but from my experience, i personally think there could be more tuba in the beginning... for a deeper and more resonant sound

  • i played the baritone soli at the begining of this song when i was in school, and it was one of my favorite things i ever got to play.

  • crappy flute sound at :55 and :56

  • Wrong.

  • wait...you can have good flute sound?

    bahaha

    jkjk

  • I don't play flute, you bozo.

  • ouch. :D

  • sounds like a wrong note...

  • This song will always have a very special place in my heart.

  • My band played this...I swear it brings tears to my eyes when i hear it played this well.

  • That's a great version Frank and The El Paso

Regional Band. The mood was fantastic from start to finish.

    Best Wishes,

    Roy Cost

  • I think that everyone agrees that Frank Ticheli is an extraordinary composer but I think that one of things about him that is truly amazing is the variety of music he can write. Take this piece, Shenandoah, it is a flowing piece with a steady beat that sounds beautiful. Then you take a piece like Apollo Revisited 2. It is, again a beautiful piece, but it has no steady beat, is incredibly modern, but it still sounds amazing. I think that Frank Ticheli is just downright amazing.

  • Frank Ticheli does a stunningly beautiful orchestral arrangement of a song that is most definitely not "his" in any sense of the word but is in fact a 200 year old traditional American song, one of the best known of our folk songs around the world. Ticheli's taste and skill shine through here - but it's sad for me to think how cut off from their own musical inheritance many young people are today.

  • I agree...and if you listen to Vesuvius, or if you've ever performed it, you would agree that Frank can do both wonderful flowing pieces like Shenandoah then turn around and do a piece as crazy as Vesuvius.

  • This piece is amazing. I have the alto sax part in the duet with the flute. I really wish we had some decent horn and low brass players at my high school. Most of ours (of the few we have) aren't great.

  • Awesome video. Just awesome.

  • Del Rio Middlie School played this song at the Eagle Pass CC Winn High School and I had the second part to the flute trio and our band got sweepstakes for reagion band in 2007!

  • I have the 3rd part and I can play quietest of flutes, it sounds pretty on piccolo

Serenade is a fun song as well

  • This is by far the best song I've ever played on my flute

  • i really liked the video. i wished my bad band was doing this song.

  • not bad for a region band!!! keep up the good work!!

  • it's in Ab...played it a few years ago

    awesome piece!

3:54 it's all about the tubas!

  • thanks for the comments...still trying to figure out if it is Ab or A natural?!

  • what instrument?

  • 0:56 you can hear a flute mess up but still amazing!

  • the flute didn't mess up it's suposed to sound like that

  • This is really good, especially for a region band... it's really hard to get the intonation at this level in such a short amount of time.

    amazing job.

  • amazing song!

  • woww that was ridiculously good!! trumpets and french horn :] thats all you need!

  • Wow! The music was amazing. The video wasnt so amazing...but I guess its about the music and not the video. Thanks for posting it!
