@lovewolf2000 shut up I dont see anything wrong with what they are doing, I should know because my trainer lunges her horses very similar, but my trainer uses the clinton Anderson method, I bet u don't know a thing about horses
My horse is a Welsh pony(you can see her on my channel) and I try to lunge her when I can but she has a tendency to not care if I have a whip or anything, all she does is come sraight to me after doing half a circle. She does mainly do western but has started jumping and I started with a western saddle but she has gotten better and now I do it bareback, but I would love some help with her if you could. But AMAZING horses
no need for shoes, boots or a chain on the halter, all you need is a rope halter and it looks like your horse knows what it's doing and you're not really giving the right signals as stated by one of the commentators above
Well there are things I wouldn't have done and others I would have, but to be honest who cares?Looks like you were having fun, no one was hurt in any way, the cat sat through the show so well done and keep up the fun. Leave the argueing about who knows more about horses to those who must have the last word and do or die over it.
@akanewe thanks for the comment. we all learn different ways of doing stuff, doesn't make someone elses way wrong. and we were having a lot of fun :) haha
2. You are giving out the wrong signals - maybe if you told your horse what to do and directed it, it would move away properly rather then scaring it away with a bolder type thing on the end of the rope?
3. You're on slippery ground when you jump, do you have any idea how risky that is? - Yes we all make mistakes but you should have noticed that and stopped after the 1st time, that's the most common way of a tendon injury.
4. Try a lunging whip, if your horse is scared then try friendly gaming/desensitizing it. (To the girl that didn't)
5. If you are going to use a 'halter' then use a rope one, a pressure one - they're not 'harsh', they are actually more conotlable, safer and encourage the horse. A normal nylon/leather halter has a thick bit which sits on the horse's boniest part of the nose, the thicker it is, the easier it is for the horse to push against it and get free.
The bony part of the nose where the halter is has little feeling for the horse, if you pulled against it, it wouldn't hurt. Just annoy it.
6. I like the way you said you should never hit your horse unless its being incredibly stubborn, I am not one for hitting horses however yours were very un-active and gentle encouragement rather than launching the end of the rope at it should have been done.
@emaieoghanahally 1. we usually do, but it had just rained and our horses knew we weren't actually going to ride them, so they were being lazy. plus the ground was slippery, like we said, and we didn't want to make them work too hard.
@emaieoghanahally 2. i'm not sure what you mean by this... we use the whip to keep our horse out more towards the end of the rope because they like to drift in. if you have a better suggestion, please let us know and we'll see how that works, but this is what we've found is best for our particular horses.
@emaieoghanahally 3. that's not really a jump, it's more like an elevated step for Hannah, so we weren't really concerned with her slipping any more than if she'd just be running around on her own. they slip and slide around so much in the field because it's basically mud and they're on 24/7 turnout, so in consideration of all that, it wasn't really a risk.
@emaieoghanahally 4. (from the girl lunging the bay horse) i don't actually own her, and her owner told me to not use the whip with her. and when i tried it because i got annoyed, she just literally races around everywhere, so i stopped using it.
@emaieoghanahally 5. you use a rope halter while you're lunging? i would think it would be hard to clip on... and considering that rope halters do have a bit more "bite" than nylon, i wouldn't want to use that while i'm lunging as Hannah tends to run in straight lines and turn when she hits the end. it's a rather disjointed circle.
@emaieoghanahally 6. thanks! :) i've seen people just whack away on their horses and what it's done to them, and so i really think that should be a last resort.
@emaieoghanahally 7&8. as i said earlier, both horses knew we weren't really doing anything from our attitudes, so they were both going through the motions and just waiting for us to be done. they're not usually bored/confused when we normally do this.
I know this has nothing to do with lungeing a horse but my horse when you put the saddle on his back he bucks it off and he is well trained I don't know what to do
@bugbug0827 The first thing I would do would be to rule out any physical issues, such as a strained muscle or a problem with his spine. Make an appointment with your vet and have him look at your horse's back and watch his reaction when you put the saddle on. If there's no back problems, make sure the saddle fits well and isn't pinching a nerve or muscle along his back.
@bugbug0827 Barring any physical issues, I would then evaluate yourself and see if perhaps the way you're riding him is making him dislike riding or if perhaps you're bouncing or doing something else to make him associate the saddle with pain. Let me know how it turns out and I hope he gets better!
@CanaidianRider Well when i bought her she was advertised as being leopard appaloosa which she definitely isn't and her birth certificate says dark bay or black. Once I bought her i did some research because I have seen very few horses that look like her. I found out she is closest to what they call Varnish Roan. I think horses with this coloring are more common with a base color of brown. I just think she is just a mix of everything :P
@LittleRedFilly If you don't have a cavesson you run the chain of the lunge line through one of the side rings on the halter over the nose and clip to the other side. Doing this gives you more control for stopping and such. :)
@warmbloodjumper45 thanks :) she's a 17-year-old TB mare, and she's gained a little more weight since this video. we are planning on putting some more videos up, but Hannah actually went back to camp (so I don't have her anymore) and Sky (the other horse) moved to a different barn, so everything was a little chaotic for the past few months. now that everything's settled down we're planning on getting some more up :) thanks!
Hrmm I have not run into this problem myself, but I would probably give a little yank/jerk on the lunge line. It usually gets the point across of who's in charge. If that doesn't work let me know!.
yeah they would probably work also, just be sure they are on tightly, because if they do rub their fetlocks together they could come off if they are not tight. good luck!
hey, nice horse!! love his color. i was lunging my horse today. he is only 4. He is always bucking and rearing and having fun on the lunge! lol.. ill post a vid soon!
wow thats awsome. i just got this western horse and i dont know any games or anything. this rly helped alot :P i found out he knew to do this cuz my friend came over and was showing me some stuff. so i looked this up. thanx again
@FreeRhyme2 I'm so glad this helped you! it was a little wet so i wasn't sure if it would turn out well...i guess it did :) have any questions just ask
hey! great video. its helped me learn how to lunge my horse! just wondering, if your horse comes in towards you. do you move backwards or just stop the horse?
thankyou! I'm glad it helped you. That happens alot to me and my horse (sky). Like she sort of makes a oval. I first make sure that we are on flat(ish) ground sometimes that does it. If i am when she come in I stick the lunge whip at her so if she gets too close it pokes her. I sometimes works sometimes doesn't.
@lovewolf2000 alright some things aren't completely correct I wouldn't have done everything but different people have different methods
