They mention Salinger because he was a recluse. He more or less panicked in the spotlight, and stopped writing. When he says "passed away", he doesn't mean death, he means it metaphorically that he stopped writing. He "commited suicide" by giving up writing, THAT's why he's in the song.

Not trying to pick loopholes or anything here but the song features some of his heroes that commit suicide obviously. Yet he states that Salinger passed away? This confuses me a little bit as he only died in 2010, a little while after this was written. Am I missing something there?
