  • i love the evolutions. i have 2 humbuckers and 1 single coil evolution in my jem, and i love these pickups. they can do everything. blues country jazz surf fusion, no problem

  • very very very very useful demo!

  • @prabowoputra Thanks a lot!

  • Dude, your facial expressions are so creepy!

  • @The1970sInfatuate He's doing an impression of your mom

  • I have a FRED on my PRS. It's an awesome pickup, but personally I want the 3% warmer sound of the Evo xP nice vid, thanks for doing this review.

  • There isnt really much difference betwen these 2 pickups from what I hear in this vid, they both sound good as they are, just a tiny bit different.

  • @GetInThaKitchen I totally agree with U. Not a big difference.

  • finally...a guy who can compare pickups...congratulations man...you are one of the few! i m gonna get the evolution :D

  • This is how to do a demo. Awesome, man!

  • @leonjay1 Glad you enjoyed it!

  • I'm a man who enjoys a parker guitar as well, nice choice bud.

  • @BrianMWrong Thanks! :-)

  • Amazind video dude, i have a question for you, I have an ibanez and was thinking of putting the evolution pickups in the bridge, which pickups should i use in the neck and in the middle, im looking for a shred sound

  • @pantallica1997 Thanks for watching! Are you looking for single coils or hum buckers?

Dimarzio's website has a good tool to pick your pups. :-)

  • Dimarzios rule! I had a Tone Zone, but found it a bit boomy and sludgy at times, but now my old Ibanez has a D activator and a PAF Pro at the neck. Not a usual combination, but this is the happiest I've been with this guitar in a while. Was also considering the Evo, since it performs excellently on my strat. All in all, I love how theres a Dimarzio for everything

  • Cool comparison. I threw the Evo in my bridge. I think from the video it sounds warmer. Dig em both though in the vid. Good vid as always.

  • @WaydeMRafnel Thanks man!

  • Evo for me

  • In my Schecter I am runnings a P Rail neck and a EVO 2 Bridge however judging from your demo

i would rather use the fred because of the extra highs. I can always make up bass with the P Rail in the neck thank you for shearing the info

  • Did you ever do the Evolution vs the Crunch Lab?

  • @GuernB2 Not really, I mean not in a video. But I kept the Evo in my Parker.

  • Do you think the paul gilbert injector in the neck, and evolution in the bridge would be good? Also, could you make a video of how to change pickups.lol. so sorry, never done it before.

  • @WuzzMcWaffleStein Should be a great combo! As far as installing pups I always have someone else do it. Not complicated I heard though.

  • @Wallimann Ok, thanks man :)

  • @WuzzMcWaffleStein

Its easy as hell, you get a wiring diagram from DImarzio, then if you have half a brain and a soldering iron your good to go

  • Hi man jeff here.. i have now sd active pick ups and i love the pickup for riffing for for solos it sucks.. do you think that the evolution is the right one for solos? i need a combination between heavy riffs and a pickups for clean solos ( with distorsion of course) regards

  • @guitarralaraja I personally like the Evolution better. But it depends on the guitar. I found out that my Parker is not great at bringing out the character of the pickups..

  • Evo all the way , that´s my favorite Dimarzio pickup then comes the Tone Zone

  • noob question, can i put the Fred in the neck and the Evo in the Bridge?

  • @Pierceher Yeah, for sure!

  • I like the FRED. It would probably sound cool in a Les Paul.

  • Man when you did the legato runs it was amazing both sounded exactly like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani it was hard to tell the difference. It just seemed that the Evo had more sustain and harder hitting the the Fred. Im glad you did this because not only was i trying to decide which pickup to get I also have a Parker Fly so this was a very nice video for me. I think Im going with the EVO. I want to replace my 2 singles also. At the neck I really want that Malmsteen strat sound Not sure what to get

  • @danbenkert Thanks! I'm glad this was useful!

  • Oh and PS with the Evolution your mistakes sound more, its an unforgiving pickup.

  • I have an ibanez rg 560 with a FRED in the bridge. Before i had the evolution but i changed it out cause it was too SHARP. I really like the clean sound from the FRED. I play mostly Santana though and i could see how a heavy metal person might prefer the Evolution.

  • @Wallimann hey im thinking about changing the bridge pickup on my John Petrucci Music Man, and i dont know which is better for boths crunchy rhythms and searing solos, and i think the evolution is the right choice, but the tone of the Crunch Lab rocks too, any ideas??

  • @ordonez187 Both are great choices, although the one you currently have should be awesome too!

  • nice vid! hmm they say the evo is too bright, I have an ibanez rg350m and I was want a versatile pup, nice for shredding, clarity, etc. Would the evo be nice? Awesome stuff dude!!!

  • @rogueshadow12 Thanks for the comment! I like the Evo, I personally don't find it that bright at all...

  • @Wallimann tnx Im gonna try it out will it sound good with basswood?

  • @rogueshadow12 It should sound great, yeah!

  • @Wallimann tnx man gonna try it out!

  • Evolution WIN!

  • It's probably been answered already, I love both vai and satch, but which pickup is a better all rounder, which cleans up better when you roll of the volume, and which pickups the harmonics better. Thanks in advance if you could answer any of these :)

  • @justanotherlespaul I like the Evolution better for versatility...

  • @justanotherlespaul Evolutions are really a love hate pickup. They sound great for some people (including steve vai), but I know people have have bought them only to totally hate them, and people who have bought them and loved them.

  • I want an all- around great Pup for my RG. It's a 1550M, I want something for metal, rock, clean tones (jazz?), and some singing melodic riffs from the neck Pup. Would the Evo's be good here?

  • @RojoYamamoto Yeah, I think the Evo will fit what you want!

  • @Wallimann Sweet. Thanks!!

  • Great video! I just bought the evolution package b/m/n and I was looking for a video like this since I love the Satriani stuff too! now can u show us how to do the lick in 1:18 thanks!

  • @Lossaavedra Hehe! Yeah, I'll try remember to throw it in a next video. Thanks for watching! :-)

  • I think this comparison gives people the wrong impression of both pickups. It sounds like they were played through a modeller which made them sound almost the same. I have both of these pickups installed in identical s540's and record with them. Through a loud tube amp, the Fred has a much wider sound, and because the output is lower, it doesnt compress as much. The evolution is very sharp in comparison. They both have similar harmonics, but again, the evo is tigther, so they arent as big.

  • @cwmahood You are absolutely right. Back then I didn't have an amp and used an Eleven Rack. I love the rack, but thoses pups shine through a real tube amp.

  • true what you say about comparison; i would also add that the Fred has a bit more presence but the highs are rounded and so the Evo cuts more, a bit like a PAF. The Fred too has a bit more grit. (That may be related to the less output).

  • This is great! Thanks for taking the time to do this. I hope theres more to come..

  • @Sensates85 Thanks man!

  • Really nice video, two really good sounding pickups, i can't choose!! :)

  • @thedancenight Thanks!

  • Please i hope to hear the Tone Zone VS Breed

  • A Very usefull demo , Thank you so much .

  • @dimarzioooo Thanks for watching!

  • I prefer the evolution

  • @nomeinvisivel Me too. :-)

  • @Wallimann Hi just wondering if you could shoot a video of the evolution playing some interval type chords, like Root5th Root3rd Root(m)3rd. I tried the Fred in a js guitar and found that it was a little muddy even with slightly scooped mids on the amp (Blackstar Series 1 100). I want to stay away from pickups with scooped mids because I dont want to be lost in the mix and I like some of the grind they produce. Anyway just want to hear the articulation of the evolution riff wise.

  • @heath832 Yeah, I'll try to upload something like that...

  • @Wallimann Sorry I may have been over complicated there or not clear. Thank you for the quick reply. Basically I just want to hear the pickups separation when playing notes together with somewhat hi gain.

  • Have a breed in my RG right now. But I really like the Fred, so I'll be switching those two out :)

  • @ErtThewolf Cool!

  • i have evolutions as bridge. i think its a bit shrill on top end..but excellent presence

  • They sound very similar to me with the evo sounding thicker. That's about it.

  • David, you're an amazing player and I admire you tremendously! I've had an evolution in my neck position for almost a year now and I really love the overall sound of it. I can see why Satch uses the Fred though. I would probably use it as well (if I had a guitar to spare) because the notes don't seem to ring out as long giving more of a staccato sound that would probably sound really good for my personal style of fusion :D The evo is also amazing to play clean in the neck position for me, btw

  • @LydianHarmony Thanks again for the super nice encouraging comments!!!!

  • evo is the way to go. more clarity. i have the evo2 in my strat. i'll never take it out.

  • @wickedwizardofspeed Yeah, I setlled for the EVO too. :-)

  • Both are good. I think Fred is better for riffs, because of more fatty sound than evolution, and Evo of course for solos. For me Evolution is the better one.

  • Fred has more bass. I love this one.

  • Both sound great...

  • you should not tell wich one till after

  • Another vote for Fred! Just has a warmer sound to me.

  • Fred all the way

  • Fred...nice

    Evolution... awesome.

You're right, the fred has more bluesy sounds at its core... I personally think the Fred suits your style of playing.

  • I seem to be going against the popular opinion here but I think the fred sounded way more 'open'...

  • God! My ear must really suck! I can't hear any difference at all! I mean, I'm listening on my laptop, but considering I'm hearing it from YouTube, that shouldn't matter, right? I thought the Fred had a "rounder" tone on a few licks, but for the most part, I didn't hear any difference at all!!!! What is wrong with me?

  • what modes/scales are you using at 1:18 it sounds so good :) please reply.

  • the MoJoe is an updated version of the fred, i reckon you should review the evo and the mojoe together. the mojoe has more output than the fred

  • the fred sounds almost like it's singing!

  • The Evo is definitely hotter sounding as you said. The Fred seemed a little deeper and rounder sounding. Not sure which I prefer actually.

  • Somwhow I liked the Fred better. But to me, the sound is very much the same with both pickups. It's hard to tell the difference. Great video anyway!

  • I just got a JEM :) I like the pups in it. they are sexy

  • @EstevanMusic Congrats on the new Jam!

  • Hey David.Great video! I have a question:

Can you suggest how to choose new pickups for my guitar? What are the basic elements to look at when looking for new pickups? Sorry,if its kinda dumb question :D Thanks a lot :)

  • @gotoka3000 That's a great question but so hard to answer. Pickups are gonna sound different depending on your guitars, amps, and so fourth. That's why I did these videos. But it's a hard thing!

  • evolution all the way!!!

  • @SHREDDER222X That's the one I kept...

  • i got Evolution on neck and bridge and i would never ever change them (again from crappy ones ^^ )

  • I REALLY LIKE THE FRED!!! And I don't even like DiMarzio but those I really like

  • Noticing that you have been doing a lot of DiMarzio reviews lately. Are you endorsed by any chance?

  • @MrMystereli Yeah, I'm endorsed. :-)

  • Great video. I was thinking on changing my pick-ups and I like dimarzio. It would be great to see you test some neck dimarzios.

  • whoo hoo, that one lick sounded like lincoln brewster :D I liked the fred more in your parker. Great review as usual

  • @skleung Thanks Sam!

  • @skleung lol yeah !! it rlly did :) dave you probbably now his music? being a Christian and i believe lincoln is pretty big in the us ? but lincoln does it a bit more simplified. Without legato.

  • @levitheguitarplayer I heard the name, but am not familiar with him. I'll check him out!

  • @Wallimann

Cool yeah you should :) he is pretty good. A great voice too. he isnt a jazzy/fusion dude more like gospel/blues/rock/pop you should check out " the arms of my savior" and "let your glory shine" let your glory shine is where that lick u played last was played in. Anyhow check it out if u have the time !

godbless keep on posting your inspiring allot of guitar players out there !!!

  • Hey David, nice review as ever. All i thought was missing from this one was a demo of the two pickups' reaction to the guitar's volume control. It would've be cool to hear how well they cleaned up.

  • @hermitette Oh yeah, I should have thought about that!

  • The FRED is one of my all time favourite pickups, it just has beautiful not definition

  • I prefer the Fred. There's a lot more clarity and note definition, where as the Evolution sounds a bit compressed. The Evo still sounds good though!

  • Is there a creation pickup? haha

  • yup ,evo's in 1 guitar,my js has the fred ,another has mo joe and another has evh and can't forget the bbq ,love em all .Althought 2 many pickups ,2 many choices

  • great review thanks Dave, were you using the eleven rack?

  • @mjones53 Yeah, Eleven Rack. :-)

  • Evo all the way, I love the Evo and have one in my own guitar. I love it when you do these kinds of videos, they really help us make important tonal decisions.

I have a question, what neck pickup are you using?

  • @XAlphaZEROX I am using a Dimarzio Chopper on the neck.

  • are u going to sell ur spare pickups ?

  • @xom400 Probably not.. :-D

  • @Wallimann damn i want a cruch lab

  • Love the riffs.

  • @vincehalvorson Thanks man!

  • Try the evolution 2, its less on the treble side and more warm. Yet has the harmonic response and output of evolution. I have one and i am really happy with it

  • @coffeeflush Cool!

  • I like Fred the best

  • hah, thats actually pretty funny because I usually scoop alot of the mids out of my sound but I actually like the Fred better! lol it could have been because I played them in their respective signature models (Satch's Ibanez and Vai's Ibanez)

  • Dave I hope DiMarzio will send you a Steves Special one of these days I think for your style it would be a fantastic fit, great pup for legato styles and hi-fi cleans!

  • @Dreamscapevirus Oh cool!

    I should order one!

  • @Wallimann Cool! Good luck with that, hope to maybe see you demonstrate it some day and hear your reactions!

  • I like the Fred just that bit more. It sounds brighter to me - and I like that sound for a bridge position just that bit more (:

  • What gauge strings do you use Wallimann? Also, loved the video hehe :)

  • @avenegedslaterfold Thanks man! I use 9-42s

  • @Wallimann Ah cool :) Thanks.

  • I prefer the Evolution. Fits better for my style of playing :)

  • @Zarnity I kept the Evo in my guitar too. :-)

  • @Wallimann Awesome!! :)

  • Based on your experience, how does the height of the pickups influence the sound?

    Thanks in advance!

  • @SomethinWild higher = hotter, more treble, and more presence.

  • @SomethinWild Yeah, Richogem answered right. :-)
