  • Im a uspta pro, and find you teaching technique very good, teaching the leg bend with the toss as progression in not normally done, but I think you correct to teach it. Great job, Brad

  • Thank you, sent the video to my tennis team.

  • Thanks, you are a great instructor.

  • nice

  • palm or 2 middle fingers? how about the pronation?

  • Great lesson! Thanks for sharing

  • not the greatest but it's ok...

  • thx man. this was nice. hope this brings you lots of students :D

  • bend and kill the girl with ball!!! :DDDD

  • Any body win state using this? I think yes!

  • Hi Joseph!! You are the best tennis instructor in the world =D D D D D your video is getting so many views :) can't wait to play tennis with you soon! :)

  • THANK YOU! I CAN SERVE NOW !!!!

  • Your video has helped me a lot this season. My serv has improved so much I even reached the final in the club tournament this year which shouldn´t be possible. Next year I am going to take it to an even higher level, Thanks for the tips :o)

  • poor kid :( she must have been imported from china

  • Excellent job. Will need to incorporate a few things in my game. Wish you had a segment about racquet - ball impact tips. (wrist pronation etc)

  • GREAT LESSON MY FRIENT THE BEST I'VESEEN SO FAR , REALLY HELPFULL

  • Lol.... I love it!

  • Lol step 2 "Bend and toss" ha ha I'm a pro already

  • Nice video, you're a good instructor. That all made sense to me :)

  • This is the best tennis lesson I have ever seen.

  • 3:43 his hits sound like gunfire, got the cops on the run! lols

  • Thanks for the lesson Joseph!

  • dang so much difference between your left and right arm

  • @akosigloc9

Haha, I saw that. It's not that big of a difference in reality.... the sun does me no justice....

  • There are millions of videos on teaching abt tennis serve...but , THERE IS NONE that CAN COME EVEN CLOSE' to this. You are the best. These two videos are the best. I showed this to couple of my friends kids, and their serve improved a lot. I can see they are very confident on the steps you showed in your videos.

  • Thank you for this great lesson, it really helped me a lot. Keep up that good work, have a nice day.

    Joe

  • Joseph - I really enjoyed this lesson - thanks so much for putting it together .

  • really helpful. i usually play with family and friends and never took a lesson, but seems most of the game isn't hard to figure out (at least at a novice level :P) except the serve. been hangin around some more experienced tennis players and my serve's really been holdin me back, but these tips should help alot :)

  • great and simple :) tnx

  • Thanks for the great lesson. Really makes a lot of sense and I plan on using this to help my serve.

  • @khalsted

Thanks! Good luck! When you practice the hitting part, don't bend so much at first, and concentrate on tossing and smacking. I know I bent my knees a lot when hitting in the video, but the important thing is to toss right, and get the right hitting motion. Remember, shoulder back, then twist, swinging your shoulder around into the ball... I hope it helps.

  • @tenishotshot

Thanks for the lesson. I think this should help me. I didnt actually know how and when to bend the knees. but now i think this would improve my knee action. you didnt mention about the height of the toss and jump during the hitting.

  • @tenishotshot - Maybe the best video on serving progression I have seen on YouTube. And I have seen a lot of videos and am a tennis instructor. I'm going to share this on my Facebook. Well done man!! Your assistant is really cute too...made me laugh.

  • One of the best lessons I've seen yet on the serve(which i am useless at by the way)

must watch this a few more times, thanks.

  • This is really helpful. Thanks a Lot!How would you define a continental grip? Are there any other grips i should know off as a plain beginner?

  • @The20101991

Well, continental is really safe and standard for serves, volleys, and backhands. I use a conservative grip for forehand: semi-western grip. Guys lately use more topspin grips for forehand, like Western grip. Check out this website for grips. I'll edit the video information with this link.

  • @tenishotshot I use continental grip only for volleys and slice.Western for forehand, eastern for backhand in backhand and serve.I'm a slice server, but i often serve the first serve flat and i use bachand grip.as i know you should move your leg just centimetres to the left, or a bit more, but i'ts wrong putting the leg next to the other leg and far from it.I tell you that because when you do that your body is open and opponent knows where are you going to serve

  • @debil222221

Actually, no, the opponent can't predict my serve from my body. The only way prediction can happen is from the position of my toss. There are many pros who have the same step as I do. Does it look like my body is open? I wouldn't be able to generate power if my shoulders were open. I always try to keep my racket shoulder back until I'm hitting the ball.

  • Great video - thanks a lot, it really helps me!

  • @Nathunden

Thanks for watching! Good luck with your game. Also, a tip: When you go from practicing your ball toss, to actually hitting the ball, don't try to bend your knees so much. Concentrate on just the toss, and bend only a tiny bit at first. People usually try to bend a lot, lose their balance, and end up with a horrible toss. Just a tip, in case you might need it! Good luck! :)

  • How do you place your racket? If you had your fist pointing towards the floor, would you have your racket face facing the floor too or would you have it facing to the left?

  • Bend and, uh oh, whats all that white stuff on my screen? :O

  • @jonnymojo555

Thanks for being so excited about my video... I guess...

  • @tenishotshot i realised that was uncalled for so i cancelled but i guess it didnt work :P

nice vid by the way =)

  • Awesome video! Now time to practice and hopefully kick some butt

  • great tips. fixed my horrible ball toss. i was tossing too quickly and bringing my arm down too fast. arm was never straight, toss was continuous with ball all over the place. looking at sky up straight arm is fantastic tip. also bending knees at the same time as arm goes up.

  • Thanks for these tips, I played today and kept smashing all my serves into the net or clipping it. Going to give that ball toss a practice, I think that's where I'm going wrong. You're a great teacher, thanks

  • are you hitting straight down on the ball?

  • nice babolat racket

i have the same one..but i recently but a newer one

  • im sure this video has helped many people get into tennis as it has improve active players, it helps newcomers get to grips with often the most difficult to master strokes, THE SERVE! which is rather unfortunately, the most necessary.

  • Which grip? Continental grip? Great video!

  • Great very detailed instructions on the swing. I'm subscribing and can't wait to see other lessons!!

  • How fast is your serve?

  • @antoniochoi987

Not sure how fast it is right now. In 2003-2003, I clocked around 90-110mph first serves and 70mph second serves on radar.

  • SUPERB VIDEO, nothing about pronation or follow through though, 2 problem areas, for me at least

loved the video though, hitting the courts now to practice those bits, thanks alot buddy

  • dude cool you play sc! same! go silver league! haha sorry reading the comments. but yeah hopefully this will help me a little.. im 14 and my serve is decent outside of matches but last match i choked and lost a few games for my doubles team. ill try this out next time im at the courts!

  • Thanks.

  • Great video, thank you for uploading.

  • hey its great that you really put an effort in teaching them ^_^... i really hope there are ppl like you in our court here...there are many of us kids here who are just playing by experience and really wanted sum1 to put an effort in training us ^_^...guess the old ones here in us are too absorbed with their own,,>.< btw nice tut guess i;ll practice this tomorrow... greetings from davao, philippines ^_^

  • Great vid, thank you =P

  • why do you have knee bend?

  • @TripleJShotzZ stability, and leverage

  • I hope you are giving the video assistant so lessons on the house, she is obviously a coordinated athlete and potentially your ticket to the coachs' box

  • @tenniswithd

Haha. She's a sweet girl. I need to pay for my tuition, but I do give her quite a good rate! I should show you my other student, a 4 year old tennis genius. We can rally from the baseline.

  • Hey, i play tennis at school, i guess you could say im okay, but my serving really sucks booty, it always ends up to be a fault, my coach says it's because i need to hit the ball at an angle, but she never explains what she means, do you think you could make another video and show us how you're hitting it

  • @TheFunYerds

Hey! So, actually, I made a video for you. But I forgot to refer you to it. If you check my page, you'll see my most current video. I'm just practicing my serve over and over again. I included a clip at the beginning in slow motion, to show you the steps to think about (knee bend, toss/racquet up, full extension). Good luck!! And thanks for viewing, as always. Just remember to relax, and get a smooth motion. Act as if you're jumping up to casually high five someone!! :)

  • Question, do you have to toss the ball and bring your racket back at the same time, I try to do that, but it never works for me, but I bet I can get it with practice, my serve is like the first one. I have my racwuet already back, and then when i toss, my racwuet goes more back to get more power when i hit the ball. great video.

  • @Starpower1212

Hi! Yes, ideally you should toss and bring your racket back at the same time. Check youtube for Federer serves. The power shouldn't come from your racket reaching further back. It should come from your legs and your upper body whipping into the ball. Find the video "Roger Federer serves from Back Perspective", and carefully watch (1) his feet, (2) his racket arm.

Don't try to pull your racket back too much. Just first concentrate on the knee bend and racket up. Goodluck!!

  • @tenishotshot Thank you so much, i tried doing that and my serve has gotten a whole lot better. it helped me win my tennis match today greatly too. thanks so much!!!!

  • @Starpower1212

Thank you!! I made another video, just in case. It's just of me practicing my serve. I'm glad your serve got better! Remember, your ball toss is most important. If your motion is really good now, the only thing you have to concentrate on is your ball toss. If you're having a bad serving day, just correct your toss! Good job, again!!

  • thanx, helped lots

  • huuuuuuuummmm boióla

  • Hah nice hairstyle, I have the same kind. Gets in your eyes a lot during tennis XD

  • @CaptainCrunch4Me

Yeahhh.. Always gets into my eyes. I wear my hat when I play tennis. Back when I was serious, I always had my hair cut short. Haha.

  • Looks like you need to take a crap in the first 30 seconds : )

  • @Trixsurfa

Haha, thanks. All my friends made fun of that. I wasn't sure how high the camera was, so I was leaning over to make sure my head wasn't cut off.... I definitely didn't need to take a crap. Darn.

  • Great Video

  • you should discuss the correct grip, it would also be good to mention the position of the feet to the line. I also like to have beginners start in throwing position with the racquet head behind the back pointing to the ground and elbow pointing to the sky. Doing this gets them into the slot position and will develop into a full serve.

  • @debi10s

Thanks. Yes, I failed to mention the grip. I answered the same question to another commenter. The correct grip is continental grip. That was the old way of teaching the serve: the "back scratch" position. I was taught that way, too. However, most kids start getting lazy because it's tiring to hold their elbow up high while practicing. My method has been more successful and resulted in stronger serves. The problem with back-scratch is that it's not the correct form during the ball toss.

  • *Gasp* your Korean. Me too. South Korean rite? (Starcraft)

  • @FMLRarshnarg

Haha, hi. Yeah, I'm South Korean. I don't think it's likely to meet a North Korean. And yes, I love SC!

  • thanks!! this video helped me a lot, i play tennis all the time, and love the sport to death (greatest sport ever) but whenever i play with friends i tend to ask to rally instead of play a match just because of my crappy serve:) this video should help me though, thanks again!

oh and i step when i serve..? should i not step?

  • @cokkiemonstar873

Hi! Thanks for watching the video. Stepping is totally up to you. Usually the step gives you more height and maybe more power. But the non-step (platform serve) is stable and very simple to learn.

Try the step. It's a great serve, and it helps me bend backwards easily when I want to hit topspin kick serves. But be careful to not make it too messy. A simple step while you're tossing the ball. Watch Serena Williams serves, because she has the perfect step serve motion.

  • think you could tell me how you grip the raquet thanks!

  • @DkOfTheEbonBlade

The most standard grip is a continental grip. I don't change my grip from first and second serve, because I want to stay as consistent as possible. I can hit flat, slice, and kick serves with this grip.

It's hard to explain without pictures. If you google image search for "continental grip", you'll find good images.

  • Great video i learned a lot. Thanks :D

  • blah

  • This is the gayest video ever.

  • Thanks!

  • This video helped me a lot. All the videos I saw so far were talking about advanced serves that I couldn't hope to pull off after only playing for a week. However this was the first I came across which methodically covers the most basic techniques. Thank you, and I'll send this to all my friends who are just getting into the game as well!

  • @willpower101

Sorry, I'm replying so late. Thanks for liking my video and promoting it!

  • Very good informational video thanks much my gamertag on xbl is Mahlmannator ifcanyone has an xbox

  • I've been getting some messages asking about the knee bend. Yes, you can practice the serve without bending your knees. However, if you bend your knees before contact, you can explode into the ball and increase the height and power of your serve.

Also, you can choose to use a step or not. I practiced the knee bend without a step, but my actual serve at the end of the video had a step. I use a step serve for extra height. It doesn't matter. I use the same windup as Federer, except I use a step.

  • nice. the little girl's so cute ^^

  • Oo, awesome tips -- thanks, will practice! :D
