  • Beautiful pictures of the Lady, thanks for sharing

  • The immortal Sandy at the top of the tree.

  • @paullavan2011

I'm going through a periodical phase of interest in the Napoleonic Wars at the moment and I first became aware of this song through my dad who listens avidly to Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, Norma Waterson et al, and I was trying to find it on my own ipod but listening to it now, the lyrics paint a cinematic picture of war, 'the cannons they do rattle, the bullets they do fly.' But her voice and the melody are an ominous warning of what it must be like going to war.

  • wonderful sandy denny <3

  • never heard of the band fotheringay fairport convention sound from a far distance familiar .

  • who died so young? i have never heard of them.

  • @MyLalinea gibbereth, below, has "he" I assume that to be a mis-type. She was Sandy Denny and Fotheringay was the band she formed after leaving Fairport Convention.

  • who died so young? i have never hesrd of them.

  • ...astounding ....

  • RIP Sandy Denny. You will never be forgotten. We may have the Rebecca Blacks and Justin Biebers and Puff Diddys of this world, but they will be forgotten. Sandy Denny will remain timeless and the music immortal :)

  • timeless voice of perfection

  • Such superlative playing, and her voice.......best of her songs, no contest. So sad the manner of her passing, way before her time.

  • stunning sound, i'm glad this song knew how to find me at last

  • The Ewan MacColl version suddenly sounds unnaturally fast :)

  • This woman was pure magic.

  • Anne Briggs and Jean Ritchie were, indeed, two of the finest folk singers.

  • Nearly 40 odd years later and it still stops me in my tracks.

Thank you fo the post what a memory

  • Great. Fantastic, thanks. That voice was so beautiful, unique. It's a shame he died so young because of a stupid accident.

  • @gibberth she.

  • @nancyrowina

    Yes sorry "She"

  • @gibberth

I don't think it was an accident.

Her genius was like a meteor

    and they burn out.

  • @harmoniabalanza It was an accident...she fell down the stairs ..rushing to answer the 'phone.....hit her head, went into a coma and never recovered

  • Apart from the equally great Joni Mitchell she was possibly the finest singer of folk music ever

  • @GarnetNW Can't forget about Anne Briggs (UK) and Jean Ritchie (US) either...

  • This song makes me nearly cry every time.

  • @Brosta77

Oh live a little, cry really.

  • @Brosta77 This song really makes me cry. She was marvellous.

  • To sing with such intensity for 8 minutes, with perfect pitch and intonation is extraordinary.
