I've been guilty as an atheist of projecting my own opinions of theism onto christians. However, unlike you, this theist did not address assumptions, he merely pointed out that they were assumptions. So lesson learned for me, he won't get away with it so easily next time.
@theclinger Interesting, isn't it? Neuroscience tells us that there is just as much information traveling TO the visual cortex (from the higher processing regions) as there is from the visual cortex to the higher processing regions (this is why we can consciously flip between observing individual images among dualistic drawings and move the Ferris wheel in my Absurdity video).
...And yet our logical conclusions can still be insufficient to prepare us for a visual effect happening in real time.
Here is the problem I see. It takes a certain amount of intellectual ability to understand what your saying. It takes even more to look at it honestly, without the temptation of self delusion. Most people that are capable of that sort of intellectual honesty with themselves have already reached the conclusions that you so eloquently draw. My job from here out is to dumb them down so I can pass them along to to few and far between that are capable of questioning what they say they belive...
It is people like Infinite Hope that are driving us into a hard right, right into ignorance -- ignorance born of an anxious need to find certainty. How sad that there are minions of lazy-brained imbeciles who spend their life painting themselves into a corner. It would be sublime if they went to the corner with their own kind; but they push and drag others with them. Fight on, TA, we need your vision and your ability to communicate it so magnificently.
Out of curiosity, do you reject the idea of a greater force? I would like to point out that most scientific theories dealing with the beginning of our universe have holes in their logic that require some sort of higher power to fill them.
It isn't so much that I reject the idea of a "greater force" as much as I do not accept any proposed by human conception. Human conception is almost (if not always) flawed ... and as I often note, is too frequently self-serving.
There is also a problem of definitions: when discussing morality, people often speak of serving something "greater than us", but I consider "humanity" to be just that. If a "greater force" can be a natural thing, then I believe in the existence of gravity.
I would recommend some caution also, because we can't even describe the most rudimentary properties of our world. For instance, household magnets work by generating electromagnetic lines of flux (EMLOF), but aside from writing equations and drawing lines on paper, we don't really have a good grasp on what they are. Even words like "force" are not really explanatory, they just describe the effects they produce - but our inability to know something doesn't mean someone/thing else does.
But it is a good question, and it would certainly be interesting if we could ever find evidence of a lifeform that didn't obey any current laws of physics. As you often learn more about a machine when it breaks down than when it works, it would be a great opportunity for science if we could see the laws of the universe broken.
@TrenchantAtheist , Your very welcome !, your approach is brilliant, I particularly enjoyed the comments about Eye/Brain link. I was raised a JW can you believe and started smelling something off, when I asked my minister about Dinosaurs and was told "Its the Devils work" ! amazing how thiests CLAIM to be seeking the truth, when infact the opposite is true.
As a person who has synesthesia I can tell you I friggin' love it hehe. It took a while before I realized that not everyone saw the world quite like I do, though, and I got some pretty weird looks in school when I asked my mates what colour their tuesdays had lol.
Very cool, AtheistSwede. I've always been jealous of the woman who reported seeing numbers all around her all the time. She said math was a breeze, because all she had to do was look for the right (brightest) number, like shopping for peanut butter and saying, "Aha, there it is!" If only the rest of us were so lucky...
Yeah, I've heard about a few of those too. There's one guy who calculates by building geometrical shapes in his head. Sadly I totally suck at maths, though hehe.
Get a room...and while your at it you might wanna pick up some A5-35 for when you're done patting yourself on the back, gets mighty exhausting to carry around an overinflated EGO hte size you swagger around with!
Hmm, somebody has a chip on his shoulder. If you have nothing nice to say, at least make it constructive. Otherwise whatever it is you find so detestable about my praise is being dignified with your rather venomous response
I forgive you though :) we all get a little carried away some time
Hah, you and me both! I really can't wait until I finish the next one, but I keep adding so much that it'll probably turn into a four-part series. In any event, I'll keep you posted.
Fantastic video sir. You have an intelligent manner of speech, with a clear diction. I think that is the most appealing part of your videos. Not only are you intelligent, but you sound intelligent as well, and that is half the battle.
There are steps to certainty! Both in religion and Science! But when we keep taking steps into certainty with assumptions and not validity or logic! Then that truth of that certainty gets divided! Then becomes less ,and less likely, and less, and less logical!
Science > Religion! Operate very differently! When affirming truth!!
