@archides Its actually a water-coolant to prevent the engines from overheating on takeoff, those poor engines get worked very hard on take off. Thats why the use the water to cool 'em.
I'm working about 20 miles north of Barksdale and I get to see them fly over almost everyday. The Courthouse I'm working in now is on the final approach to Barksdale. bigj70634: You won't see them over Shreveport because their landing pattern is from the North and they come in over Benton into Bossier. Nonetheless I see one and I can't stop looking at the monster in the sky!
I live about 35 miles from Barksdale AFB, before the war started I used to watch these fly over my house, but lately all that has flown over my was are A-10s doing practice missions around my hometown or village really.
When I was stationed at Castle (a B-52 training base) we would sit at the pumphouses not far from the runway and watch the noob pilots do touch and goes all day. Some of them really had their hands full, especially in bad weather. You would see a lot of dog walking, wing tips all over the place. You would swear you were seeing crash in progress.
I was told by a 52 pilot it stands for "Big Ugly Fat Fellow", but maybe he was being polite!

@bpoostrander The water cooling (de-ionized water) will also provide more thrust. There's a lot of steam in the exhaust as well.

Love how the wings are designed to droop down at the ends and then during takeoff they lift up. Awesome, really.
