  • thanks this will help next year for my snare drum technique when i march snare...thanks (: go girl snare drummers :)

  • Thanks for all the comments. I hope to be doing more of these kind of videos soon!

  • ive been really struggling with TD and this demo has really helped, great stuff, keep it up

  • Dude, you can tell just by your body language and how you move while you talk that you've got a RIDICULOUS amount of rhythm in you. Nice vid bro.

  • excellent clear explanations - clearly a very good teacher as well as musician. thanks!

  • thanks dude, it was very helpful!

  • thanks, i had a lot of problems with my hand's crotch until now...

  • best explanation on trad grip I´ve ever seen!!!

    great video!!!

    thanks!

  • I'm a brass player but I recently started to get into playing a drumset. I was trying this traditional grip and is it normal for your hand to hurt on the side? I'm sure it's normal just for building muscle but I mean, what can I expect?

  • im tryna learn trad so i can do dci in a few years. my high school uses matched for snares

  • really helpful video man ... didn't know there was soo much techneque for traditional grip !

  • been playing matched grip forever and just now starting to switch over to trad, nice vid dude! :D

  • we got the same sticks :)

  • Great video, it really helped me a lot, excellent teaching a critical concept to drummers.

  • good tutorial thanks

  • Can you please tell me how exactly you do the rebound ?

Because i really dont get how they play single strokes in traditional grip.

I mean like ... catch it with the fingers, use the rebound and play with the fingers, not with the hand

  • it's Good!!! \o/ thanks my brother.

  • Nice tutorial.

  • Great video, thanks pal.

  • dude that helps man i love this

  • Thanks dude good video.

  • Ok I've watch 5 other vids on how to do the traditional grip. This is by far the best and easiest explanation. Thx, homie!!

  • i hate traditional style, theres something about it that just pisses me off. i like the matched grip. i mean couldnt you do anything with traditional that you could do with matched??!?!?!?!! god vid though.

  • @Guitar884 I didn't make this but but feel like answering your question. Technically yea both grips can do the same thing however left hand traditional with offer a different "feel" in the hand. I play both(mostly matched)left hand trad has been a mission and 10 years of trying is finally paying off...a little. This kid explains it very well. If you want to learn it this is a perfect place to start. Derek Pope has a great one too. Peace

  • im left handded and i use my right hand as the tradional hold is that ok/?????

  • @buchanan210 no. there is no "right hand traditional" just traditional, matched, and wrong.... that would be wrong.

  • Hey I'm not sure if you still respond here but I've got a question. Which my left hand after awhile I lose diddle quality and there's no more wrist rotation just arm, and I can't get my diddles to get any higher, so it's like and inch away from buzzing i guess. What should I do to strengthen that.

  • @InfernoZX5 play rolls on a pillow.

  • nice job teaching! First real helpful video!

Question: how do I get my unifinger to stop being dumb? My pinky always goes under my ring finger or it slides ahead of it

  • finally got the grip good

  • really informative video. thanks a lot!!

  • Good video. you look like Justin Trousesnake

  • very informative and helpful thanks a lot

  • When i first started traditional grip my fleshy part of my ring finger hurt as i played but that was only for a day or 2. Yes it might hurt at first but keep playing and it will soon go away... Also do not smudge mister smiley or grip to hard with your index finger. Check out TheMikeFix youtube channel if your interested in drumming :D

  • Great vid bro!

    Keep it up!

  • Good tutorial. Well explained. I didn't expect to much at the beginning due to the age of this guy, but he explain very nice with examples and using different camera angles. Good Job. Thank You for sharing.

  • Nice lesson. I like the close up. Is that a Seagull guitar in the background btw?

  • AT LAST, SOMEONE THAT CAN TEACH IT!!

  • For everyone experiencing pain it is natural and will pass with time. What you are going through is simply growing pains

  • there is a lot of stuff in the back round to comment on...

  • Hey man! Nice tutorial! But whenever I play with it, either the crevace between my thumb and my pointer finger, or the finger after my ring finger (nearest my pinky) feels pain. Can you tell me how to fix this, or do I have to build strength there?

  • i feel the same pain in my pinky as well, its not intense but just weird. then again this is my first day trying traditional grip after years of matched

  • Thanks for the tips Jamey Jasta.

  • I like this tutorial. Relaxed dude, funny, trowing the sticks around, spinning them and such. I like that. Good explanation to. To bad i cant learn this i have tried and tried but i just cant. And i want to, so bad. But i learned where that fulcrum thingy were atleast. And that helped out.

  • @lothfors Traditional grip isn't impossible. Just think about flipping the bird and keeping the stick resting on the valley where your nail meets your skin.

  • Pinch the nipple, flick the bird.

That's what my instructor used to say.

  • do u form blisters on the ring finger in traditional style cuz it gets really itchy and painful

  • @ztixfigure yes

  • Comment removed

  • @ztixfigure as u practice for a long time soon u'll gt rid of it

  • JAZZ HANDS!

  • I learned how to hold the stick on the left, almost the EXACT same way. However, for the left hand instead of curving the pointer finger in, i learned to keep it straight like the middle finger. From doing this, it allows me to place my thumb directly on top of the stick, so it can manipulate the stick, just how he explains with the fingers on the right hand. that way, you can use your thumb AND wrist to move the stick, cutting the overall work in half.

  • hey im a real beginner drummer and im trying to learn how to play traditional. My traditional grip is somewhat very similar but not exactly the same. Is there a wrong way to holding the stick because i get no rebound grabbing it this way but my way i get rebound and it feels way more comfortable. anyone who has some knowledge about traditional grip please respond back thanks

  • Jesus Christ this is the first sensible tutorial on here about TG. Thanks mate.

  • Thank you so much dude!

That was by far the best tutorial I've ever seen.

You were understandable, went into plenty of detail, zoomed in, added some humor, and are fun to listen to.

    Great job!

  • lol 3:17 xD

  • very nice tutorial man!

  • very helpful, thanks!

Stewart Copeland uses this technique and I wouldn't say that he plays mostly jazz.. ;)

  • Hey it was really helpful. Keep up the good work buddy. Thanks

  • SO HARD >:|

  • Great video.

You seem to have ADD or something, with all those stick flips. :P Very good teacher/explaination.

  • fulcrum,center of balance...

  • great vid dude

  • COOL!! Nice explanation. I want to know one thing though... Why did BUDDY RICH slow down on one of his videos. Was it to get a better technique & to gain speed? B sure to check some of my vids. I've learned a whole new way of playing. It's taken me 20yrs, I'm not fast but I can lead with what ever limb @ my leisure. Too see a better example check out MARCEL DRUM REZ in 10 min. Thanx.

  • lolz i rekon buddyy jut did that to build suspense and show off XD

  • oh, i for got to say, when you have "the fleshy" part of your thumb out, i usually put that part on the drumstick, seems to give me more control over it and not grip so hard.

  • @PipeBand90210. yeah that's exactly what i do too... and i play in a pipe band as well haha.

  • hey, nice explanation of the traditional grip. i knew all that before, i just wanted to see some one accurately explain it. good job!

  • nice. i dont anymore sadly. dont have enough time for it.

  • nice, thanks :D

  • Great one, helpful, thanx!

  • practice aye aye. thanks for the vid.

  • I could watch you all day, those stick twirls haha.

  • This is a brilliant vid, it's helped me alot, i've be trying to learn traditional grip for ages, this has really helped.

    5 stars!!!

  • Delicious

  • Best video on youtube for learning traditional! You're an amazing teacher! Thanks a bunch!

  • thx alot that really helped!!!!

  • this is what people need a teacher that actually has character

  • great video dude, thanks for posting it. I really struggle with traditional grip (I never manage to get enough power using it lol).

  • lots of helps thanks

  • The thumb placement on the stick is what confuses me some ppl say that the thumb should go straight up the stick other say it should be on the pointer finger so which makes a better fulcrum?

  • I would go with whichever one gives you more control.

  • How do you spin those sticks into position like that? haha

  • Great vid. Thanks!

  • Great vid man Helped me alot!!

    5 stars!!!!!!

  • what stick model do you use?

  • what stick model are you using?

  • dude this is the second time im gonna ask you what stick model do you use?!

  • i think he using vater sticks

  • This is a very good video, thanx and congratulations.

  • Thanks a lot Bhudda777. You´re a great teacher.

  • @hansbaluu I agree

  • I'm severely right-handed and have played match grip all my life. I find that I can do traditional style easily when switching the stick in my right hand but I can't do it at all with my left. Is that okay or does it have to be in the left hand?

  • no

    it is not ok

  • Doing solo music, yeah, it's sometimes ok. But in a battery, it almost always has to be the left. It's for show, and would look terribly out of place if one person had it in the opposite hand. Just keep practicing with your left, you'll get the hang of it eventually.

  • lol same here

  • dude.....i hate your shirt

  • why are you showing traditional if you dont play it??

  • thanks bro!! this is a huge help!!

  • thank you men, you rock´s si me sirvio la ayuda eh, de verdad, eres un maestro, todo un experto, saludos

  • Good job man... I really improved my technique...

  • Thank you so much, this really helped. You seem to really know your stuff, your really good. thanks again!

  • thanx that kinda helped me out a little want to learn to play with the marching snare with the traditional grip

  • nice flip at 6:04 :)

  • so when doing doubles with the left hand, does the index finger help bounce the stick at all or is it all thumb?

  • It should be a combination of the two. I'd say mostly index finger but the two are touching most of the time...

  • ok, thats what i've been doing with it, i just want to make sure i'm doing it properly before i put a lot of time into it. thanks a lot

  • Awesome video! i cleaned up my traditional grip but still can't get even buzz rolls between left and right hand

  • Superb men!! Thx very much... I think I corrected my grip... Very clear, even better explained than weckl LOL...

  • nb[2]...

kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk mo metido esse leite AZEDO KKKK.

  • nb.....

  • great video!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks a lot man, Ive been playing matched grip for 14 years but could never get the hang of the traditional left hand, this has been really helpful.

  • nice video,but...what are those hands on your tv?

  • really good!! thanks a lot!

  • i still cant roll with the left hand while =(

  • can i place my thumb on the second joint of my index finger?

  • You're good! No ego tripped video and very insightful

  • eh???? que dice

  • you are the shit man, good teaching this was really helpful

  • Clear, easy to follow, suitable for a beginner, well done!!!!

  • Hey!

What a great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge with the world! I've always wanted to learn traditional grip but didn't know where to begin, you've given me exactly what I need. Thank you!

    Namaste,

    Dey

  • Good explanation.

I really must say, traditional grip is very detailed and takes hours to perfect(Not saying I'm perfect). there's really A LOT more to Tradition grip then this.

    Specifically finger control.

  • hey thnks for the fid show a video of how to get your sticks faster

  • thanks for the vid. its pretty good explanation. i like tradiotional a little more than matched, but i wanted to see how its properly done

  • good work 5*

  • You teach well, good communicator, thank you for your generosity in posting this.

  • this helped me so much. ive been playing drums for a few months and wanted to learn traditional grip so i could do crazy stick spinning and what not. now i know not to smudge mr. smiley :)

  • vater percussion ftw

  • Wow. Thank you SO much! I'm about to do my college drumline auditions, and they use traditional, when all I've ever played is matched. I was freaking out, but wow. Awesome job teaching that. You've got some incredible talent in that whole explaining field.

  • The way you spin your sticks is mystifying :O

    Thanks for the tips :)

  • he sounds funny

  • thanks for posting this, you explained it better than my drum instructor did, so he should stop yelling at me soon enough XD very good vid keep em coming!

  • I always wanted to know how to do traditional grip, I think I might use it in jazz now just for the look.

    Great tut.

  • what are the hands for in the back?

    lol

  • They are re-creations of Leonardo DaVinci's "David". I use them in lessons to detail parts of the grip and the anatomy of the human hand.

  • Fucking spot on discription

couldnt find a decent vid on this

    But i just did

    fucking spot on aha

    Cheers

  • i did all the thumbs up below me :D first one to all of them, thats how much this video helped me and your a great teacher, i had to learn traditional because my middle school dumbass music teacher didn't know how to teach, and i had drumline auditions, and i had to do a hard as etude (which i didn't do)

and im going to drumline camp and know i know it :D :D ty so much!!

  • Voltin death pinch HAHAHA. Good teacher!!

  • He said "Vulcan neck pinch" dude as in as used by Spock Off star treck

  • I know lol, no need to get serious I wasn't insulting the series lol.

  • Awesome dude, you reall explained this well. Props

  • teach how to do your hand triks i liked it

    xD

  • Great video, helped quite a bit. You should think of giving videos on foot techniques and such, you seem like a good teacher. :D

  • Excellent instruction video- I think I have it now

  • My Air cadet band does it the same way

  • thank you so much

  • it helps with a Scottish side drum. they're made with double Kevlar to give god bounce

  • :v now if I could only get a double stroke roll going in traditional grip.

  • this is very helpful!! THANKS!!!

  • thanks Buddha. every time i played traditional, I'm always hitting a nerve and I would stop playing. now that you showed me how to properly execute a proper technique. i have the motivation to practice.

  • Thank you. It is good to hear that this was helpful for you.

  • thanks dude that helps alot.

  • THANKYOU!

  • is it wrong if i like to hold the traditional stick in my right hand even though im a righty. I see it being a problem on a kit, but solo it shouldnt be right? its just uncomfortable for me.

  • well that is the difficult part of traditional grip. You want to really push yourself outside your comfort zone and use your weaker hand (i guess that is your left in your case). It will be more beneficial for you in the long run.

  • This is by far the best tutorial on youtube for matched-grip, and i've been looking all night! Any tips for keeping the stick on the fleshy part before the nail on the ring finger? I keep slipping into the middle part of it.

  • yes, let the stick bounce straight up and down. Your ring finger is there to "catch" the stick when it is not moving. If it is not moving then it should not slide off of that finger. If it is moving then it is moving mostly from your fulcrum.

  • I completely agree - you're a natural teacher, Bhudda777! Ever consider taking a simple "training and development" nightschool course? Coupled with your compassionate and detailed teaching I think it would set you apart from every other drum instructor out there.

    Thanks for the awesome video.

  • Thanks. I've been trying to figure out how to properly hold the stick this way for years. It seems pretty adaptable to single stroke usage right off the bat, but I've always had difficulty doing multiple strokes with my left hand, even with matched grip (that at least sound the same as my right). Any suggestions?

  • Play off of your fulcrum. Just like matched grip where you allow the stick bounce from the axis of your thumb and pointer finger, with your left hand your fulcrum is closer to the web of those fingers than the tip. The principle is the same though.

  • awsome video, and the lil flips and shit u do is pretty cool

  • one thing that pisses me off is that i cant get the dang roll . ..

im gonna be in the Drumline for the duluth high school and i can barely use the traditioal style for rolls...and i think thats gonna be a problem o.o

are u supposed to losen ur grip for the left hand or sumthing ? ARGGG ~

  • Loosen but pivot from the fulcrum. This means you have to move your hands and stick less if you are on that sweet spot.

  • Sorry for being a bug but after practicing for a while I have noticed that the stick always slides down the "uni-finger" and ends up in the webbing between the middle and ring finger. how can that be avoided?

  • watch your fulcrum. Hold it there and "catch" it with your "uni-finger". Practice by bouncing the stick until this becomes consistent.

  • Is it ok if the stick rests a little more back from the fingernail of the ring finger? cuz i tried it out for a while too and it starts to hurt and seems go forward onto my fingernail.

  • yeah, it hurts at first. You will develop a tough spot on the area. Find a comfortable place for the stick to rest and move it out of the way when the stick makes contact with the surface you are playing on.

  • i need a little clarification on something. When i hold the stick in my left hand, my palm is always facing up so that i can actually look into it. is that how it is supposed to be?

  • yes,

  • that was very helpful! i bet you helped a lot of people(including me) all around the world!grea great GREAT lesson!

  • Excellent video, dude. Like U, I prefer the match though. BTW where did you get that enoumous practice pad you use in the demo??

  • Nice work.

I'm going try traditional tomorrow. Man, you can find anything on youtube.

  • wow, this is very helpful!!!

  • wow. thanks. Did you see him twirling the sticks at the start?

  • great lesson. very helpful.

  • wow this is a good video. all the other videos i've seen only teach matched grip and mention traditional.

i've got a lot of practicing to do.

  • you do good work, man, thanks lots!

  • Years ago I spent some time with Joe Morello of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, and he gave me a book on left hand technique practice with tradtional grip. As usual, your teaching is superb and your technique is awesome. Great video's, Aaron.

  • I must say good sir, very nice, very nic indeed.

That helped me out a lot.

I'm a drummer as well, intending to get a career in music, and I figured I should learn traditional sometime, and luckily I found this video.

    Very nice.

  • great video thanks man ill practice that.

  • hey, great video, but i played only a couple notes and it started to really bother me. do you think it's because the sticks im using are huge? they're ralph hardimon signature marching sticks btw

  • Size is a factor in pain. You may also be squeezing the sticks too much. When you are playing the stick doesn't really touch your ring finger. It i
