  • is it 1:1 scale?

  • Asteroids to mine for a incredible undertaking for a Utopia society, world take shape around the year 2150.

  • Very cool idea.

    :)

  • I just started reading the Rendez-vous and I noticed the three ladders and stair cases are missing from the north end.. But the bisecting ocean is there, along with it's New York island...and the south end has the spiky things.... Very, very Cool!

  • This video is a favorite on Botswana

  • One of the best stories I have read...it would be so amazing to see the inside of rama...

  • [lease make a full lenght movie of this spectacular bool by the masrter Clarke. It is more than worthy.

  • Music is as shown in the credits : Allegri - Miserere,

    /watch?v=eh31j6L95Ok

  • This video beats every space ship, space habitat video on you tube HANDS DOWN!!! awesome job eric B

  • Ramans do everything in threes...

  • Stunning. Thank you.

  • rama was nothing like this inside. this is a concept for a human-built spacestation called an ONiell Cylinder

  • Excellent, very sweet. One minor thing -- the suspension bridge curves upwards in the middle like the ones on earth do, but I tend to think the ones of Rama would curve downwards to match the cylinder curve (unless the bridge is in parallel with the cylinder wall).

  • demo? :D

  • Um, the Northern Hemisphere of rama didn't have hills, and the Southern one was much more crazy

  • @bruzewski

And there are no cross sectional light strips

  • Voyeruism could be a big problem on one of these habitats. If you're out in your back yard you never know if someone on the far side of the station is looking at you with binoculars.

  • the feuture of RTS,RPG,FPS gameming can only start here omg emagine the types of worlds u can create automaticaly with out the cumbersome detaling and terrain editing, wen i launch Radon studios(TM) are first fame is gonna be based on this collosel type of real time planit rendering

  • i would love to have a game based on that map.

  • Well, the credits say that the music is Miserere by Henry Jackman, from Allegri.

  • want to play a deathmatch on it! but its too big you need tousands of players... :D

  • Can you get out?

  • One day.

  • Love the music! Anyone know the name?

  • @LuizBarotto Miserere

  • @behnamasid :)

  • holo earth

  • Is the music made by you? :o

  • Future space tourist cruise ships may look like this... the functional ones may not be like this..

  • oh my 0_0

  • Thank you for bringing back all the memories of reading the book. Absolutely Stunning!

  • ....this is still my favorite video on You Tube......

  • What really got me going was the plane rushing by; can you IMAGINE the possibilities of aeronautics in a zero-G atmosphere??? Once you left the centrifugal force of the inner surface, you'd be Scott-free.

The music is perfect for this too, btw.

  • @Jianju69 The books says something about flying inside Rama but he has to be exactly in the center, so the gravity doesn't affect the vessel.

  • @stancostin I haven't read the book, & had assumed the gravity was simulated by sping the entire craft around the cylinder's axis. Were that the case, there would be no gravity, only g-forces. Judging from your comment, it sounds like the book is suggesting some kind of synthetic "gravity field"?

  • @Jianju69 No, no you are right the about the spinning, my mistake.

  • @Jianju69 It makes me wonder if jumping would be possible inside such a structure! You'd go floating to the other side... I think

  • @Otaku35 Jumping on the "ground" (inside of the ring world) would be very much like jumping on the surface of the Earth. You see, the ringworld is spinning, so you're stuck to the ground in the same way you're stuck to the walls in one of those spinning-cylinder carnival-rides. If you jump, you're fighting against this artificial gravity, & the ground wouldn't start rushing past beneath because you would already have momentum of the spin, (which would also push you back to the surface.)

  • @Jianju69 Thank you very much! I have wondered about that since Halo came out!

  • Wow, nice animation. I have to say I really got captivated by this and had to see it 2 or three times in a row, in order to get just a portion of the details in there.

  • Fantastic! Can't say enough about this one ...

  • holy crap! :O

  • ....this is just awesome....

  • Great to see it, there's something hugely intriguing about the Rama spacecraft - enough to keep me trudging through three sequels of soap opera dross just for those few extra glimpses into its architecture ;). I wouldn't expect much from a film myself, it'll just be hollywood melodrama, Sigourney Weaver or a lookalike playing mamma Ripley infront of a blue-screen. The human story was fairly trashy in my opinion, pretty transparent on the 'girl power!' front too.

  • Allegri = composer Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652)

    song = Miserere

    edit/arranged by Henry Jackman

  • What a magnificent view. I read "Randez-vous with Rama" without stopping after seeing this. Even though the Manatthan in the book wasn't the real Manatthan, the impression of the interior of the ship is rendered perfectly in this majestic 3d version. What most impresses me is that the author managed to make this 3d model run on regular 2005 hardware, though. FInally, the choice of music is excellent, the low bass tune which accompanies it reminds of the low humming of Rama's engines.

  • exactly how i pictured it, amazing!

  • lots of landmarks here, like new york city :)

  • If I walked over to one of the sun lights what would I encounter? Are they on the top of walls? Can we walk through these or under them? If anyone knows the answer to this please answer. Thanks.

  • @32DereenigneEsrever In the book, a character walks on one (when it's not lit). It's a long straight trench, sort of like a frozen-over canal, but not slippery. Presumably, they produce light without heat or UV rays, so it would be possible to walk on one when lit (still very bad for your eyes, though). It's not mentioned in the book, but I imagine that there would be a high wall on either side to block glare

  • @ELuhn Thank you for the excellently detailed answer. I've read one of the books in the series, and now this makes me interested in checking out more of them. I find it intriguing how the sun lamps, ocean, and the two sky-blue caps preserve the feel of an open sky even though these take up much less space than a traditional O'Neil cylinder. I'd definitely have a picnic by the bright blue cap on the grassy field that the jet flew over!

  • This music is just beautiful. And it just touches my emotions and it is so powerful.

  • Name of the song?

  • @JaVioLoL Read the credits.

  • I have no saliva left...

  • cough...COUGH..COUGH....roll eyes....peel over.....heart attack....dead.

    heaven!!!!!

  • this is amazing.

  • scifi. science is sentience, knowledge, understanding. fiction is fabrication, fantasy and unreal. scifi is fictitious knowledge, deception and lies a sinister ploy to corrupt people's understanding of themselves and the size and structure of the world they live in

  • @iorixs Bible. "Bi" meaning two, as in two-faced, duplicitous, hypocritical. "Bull" is short for bullshit, lies, nonsense. The main tool in a highly lucrative con game that blinds the ignorant and uncritical to the real world and its wondrous possibilities.

  • Absolutely beautiful work. I am stunned.

  • My favorite shot : 2:34. Gorgeous composition and movement !

  • wow, how did you do that?

  • nasa let the cat out of the bag they are buiding lifeships nothing on the level like the Rama object you could go to other planets it would be cool humans spend three year in space reaching mars and you would'nt even know it to the controll room announce it like a tv bulleton or breaking news

  • Oh my gods, this is amazing work...

  • What has one to do to get a job where can enjoy doing this kind of work?

  • This is giving scifi lovers like me a boner... This is just... Beautiful.

(1 thing tough, I don't think well be using f16s

Anymore when we can make something like that ;P)

  • @13Psycho13

We didn't make Rama. And in the books humans build fighters inside Rama.

  • @13Psycho13

Its an alien space craft. Humanity didn't build it. Hm, wonder when Morgan Freeman will be able to make the film. He's been trying since 2000 to produce it.

  • holy shit, nothing short of amazing

  • Fantastic, Just how I imagined it. This is truly a work of art.

  • Beautiful work!

  • Excellent work, truely excellent ...

  • Wow!

  • Beautiful!

A Human version of Rama, alive at that too! It is indeed a like unnerving to see a whole island on the roof, but aside from that i would live there happily.

  • Sounds like Civ4 music.

  • Seriously that is amazing beyond belief. 40 THOUSAND THUMBS!!!!!!!

  • the scenery looks like the data was taken from any geo map of manhattan (new york), the hudson river, and the jersey coast are clearly discernable in the video...

central park looking south at about mid video... and clearly manhattan island in the middle of the hudson near the end...

    verrrry coool though...

    --Mike

  • EPIC. 0.0

  • Beautiful piece of work

  • I get chills up and down my spine EVERY TIME I watch this.... just IMAGINE...If ONLY this were real.... perhaps someday we will have space colonies but I can't imagine them being the size of this.... Maybe somewhere among the stars, this does exist... Alien life that have the knowledge of constructing something as massive as this... We are not alone....Oh no...we are not alone..

  • @scott93257

Maybe...just maybe..if there is a UFO disclosure, this might actually turn out to be a reality...you just never know...

  • @Delisle4 lol

  • The Space Shuttle at the end, or edge of Rama, adds a nice touch to the many missions it carried out throughout the years. With only 3 more missions left - you gave the Shuttle an honoured salute in your video.

Our next step into Space is Rama.

  • I read the book and the cover had the same type cover as your video. Your video is beautiful. I want to live on Rama.

  • very nice 3d work i like too the dyson sphere

  • This is very, very impressive and music fit's very well with the theme of the video. I'm also very curious where this music comes from, it's a very good pice of music.

Don't we always say "Quality before quantity", well, someone did both XD

Keep it up, this is great!

  • wht about the special effects geecks who gives a honkeys ass about the music

  • @Andy68458 yeah nigga

  • The music sounds familiar, I believe it's a track from Civ IV, but I'm not sure about it

  • one day humanity will live on earth , in space colonies and other planets ......

but if we execute oprah first : )

  • Manhattan?

  • what is the music

  • what is the music

  • what is the music

  • what is the music

  • I wrote a novel titled "Teen Girl From Mars". The setting is an American colonized Mars in the year 2191. The stories involve space stations like the one you so magnificently created. I am in awe. What a splendid age to be alive where such high technology is affordable, easy to use and, when it is properly employed, so beneficial to the human spirit.

  • Wow... just amazing! What was this made in?

  • I really do want to know what this song is.

  • This is absolutely breath taking, This is how I have visualized Rama. But what is more fascinating that the main megalith city is a replica of New York City including the Two world Trade Centers and the Main park on the inside of he city. Interesting. Thou again fantastic work.

  • Simply awesome

  • are you ever considering a real-time render of that? I seriously am!!

  • Simply stunning

  • Wow... that was... incredible. 5/5

  • pretty incredible

  • Where is that music taken from??

  • I think they took the book's description of the island too literally. They described what looked like and island filled with skyscrapers in the distance "like New York" The island turned out to be a collection of buildings that housed some sort of record of its civilization and didn't actually look like a city up close.

  • It saves a lot of work to just use a model of Manhattan than create an entirely new city. Plus having a familiar cityscape in this new world makes it all the more interesting.

  • Yes but, neither did Rama have trees and fields. Putting the actual Manhattan in the cylindrical sea just adds to the sense of scale, just as the fields, trees and rivers do.

  • Wow. I wish this were an interactive environment I could play in! I wish this were the foundation for an epic space-opera game!

  • Very nice rendering. However, around the 45 second mark it shows a river oriented parallel to the long axis. This won't work as Rama's accelleration would cause all the water to run to one end. In the book all bodies of water ran 90 degrees to the long axis with one wall higher than the other to hold the water in during accelleration.

  • It was a while since I last read the book, but I think the water was actually frozen and when it thawed the ship came to life (or the ship came to life and then it thawed). Did the ship ever accelerate while "live"?

  • It didn't accellerate with them in it, but it did accellerate shorlty after they left and long before the water would have frozen. It was designed to, hence one river side taller than the other.

  • Yes, but at that point it really wouldnt matter where the water in the parallel river went. And since the river is located on the "low land" end of the ship it would eventually just gather with the rest in the main body of water anyway.

  • Your logic is sound, but none of the books ever described a body of water that ran parallel to the long axis.

  • awsome

  • Nice demo!

  • Also, from what I've been told, this animation was generated using procedural methods? If thats true, what sort of information did you feel it to determine the location of the cities, and/or roads, etc.

  • You can find a PDF document about the generation of the Rama model in the "See also" link in the video info

  • @ebruneton Did you compose the music? Great video and a great book.

  • This is beautiful.

I want to read this book now.

  • A fantastic piece of work - I'm curious, is this real-time rendering, or a raytrace of some sort? Either way, its very impressive.

  • dm121984, it looks like this was rendered in 3Delight, not in real-time. This raises another question though: ebruneton, why bother with LOD for offline rendering?

  • Amazing, thanks so much for doing this, Ive read the four books so many times. Love the pc game as well. Wish they had turned the books into films. This is a good imagining of the ship.

  • Totally Awesome! I wish saw this before I read the book - it's almost better than my imagination
