Hey man, thanks a lot! I didn't know about this at all. I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but my biggest problem is in assigning hotkey. it just seems that pressing control and a number is soo hard, especially control 1 and control2, putting my pinky down on control and pressing 1 is so far away, I somtimes use my pinky and my second finger. I'm really trying to improve and I think this is hindering me a lot. So if you know any way to get around this that would be great!
@PPAGUADA Assuming that you don't really need CAPS LOCK, you could remap it to be a second Ctrl-key. That way you wouldn't have to reach down to Ctrl to assign control groups, but instead could use Caps Lock + 1, Caps Lock + 2, Caps Lock + 3 and so on. Hmm that was a good with. The grid option is cool, but I like standard. I only play terran though, so i dont have to learn each race because i dont play random; well unless im just messing around. I wish bizzard allowed use to customize are own hotkeys for EVERYTHING. I would help soooo much more. The only promblem i have is when I hotkey my building to numbers because i have to take my hand off the keys to press 1 or 3 then i lose my place a have to look down.

This is not helpful at all, no pro player uses this, it's much easier to memorize wanting to make a roach and it being R instead of like S or whatever. Blizzard made the hotkeys be what they sound like and almost every hotkey is on the left side already which makes your brain remember them much easier then what this guy explains.
the program for remaping keyboard keys is called keytweak. unfortunately you must be an administrator, so sorry to some teenage players. I do beleive its a free download =)

@npodges personally I like buildings on 45678 and units on 123, since it's easier to hit 4 with index and q with ring. Then 1/2/3 with ring and t with index (attack move)
With the way you have it set up you need to either bend your hand to hit middle finger on 1 and ring on q, or you need to hit 1 with ring then q with ring (slower).
What I find mooooost annoying (and this is irrelevant between grid or standard layout) is that the Build button and Advanced Build Button are right next to each other - I quite frequently hit one instead of meaning the other, and then I'm like "why isn't my hotkey working?... oh!" and waste time hitting Esc and trying again... soo frustrating and such a waste of time. I reaaaally need to practice my muscle memory and reflexes a lot more! :( And possibly consider a custome layour.. :P
I think standard is easier for more just because I don't think with visuals, I think with words so hitting "D" for marauder would be easier for me than "W" for marauder because there is no w in marauder. So I was able to jump into using the hotkeys for all 3 races as well as abilities, commands, units, etc. quite easily and I have all the hotkeys for all 3 races memorized now. But for instance I have a friend who would be able to use this much better than the standard and such. Very useful info.

@112Nelo If I'm scouting Zerg early in a match I like to patrol right in the middle the of Z player's natural expo, so I'll que it up after I'm done scouting, xD
I initially considered using grid layout for its intuitiveness, but found it was difficult to adapt to the change in basic commands (attack, move, build, etc). Now after playing for so long using memorized standard hotkeys, it'll probably even harder to switch to grid. There's definite value in starting out with that, however.

i can see the usefulness of the grid option. but its sort of less intuitive for beginners (which this vid is targetted at). A is for attack, P is for patrol, etc.
@bermagic Try altering your speed for the scroll. If it's too fast, it's hard to center it on something, it if is too slow, you will take forever to get to a spot. Play around with the speed until you are comfortable with something.
@bermagic you could always set up your function keys to move to important parts of the map...ie your base and expansions and your opponents bases...by default I believe they start at f4 and go up from there..to set simply press contol and the f key you would like to set ...hope this helps.
This is rly useful but kind of late for me. :( I already mastered all the Protoss hotkeys and it'll probably screw up my game. And yes, the attack key would mess me up rly badly.
I am a lefty but only when it comes to eating, playing pool, holding a Que stick, and using a computer mouse. What option do I use to have at least many keys on the right, or central. Plz do tell and thank you.
It's worth knowing that if you use a keyboard layout that is not QWERTY (I use Dvorak and many people in the world use AZERTY) Grid will map properly to the changes in layout, whereas Standard wont. Which is another plus for using Grid.
Of course it wouldn't be a problem if Blizzard would just let us change the damn key mapping.
For the players like me, who really doesn't play a lot, but still want to be somewhat competitive, this video, and the entires series are just perfect!
The grid system rocks. Someone had to create a mod to do the same thing back in Company of Heroes. Glad to see Blizzard has it easily available as an option.
I hope you don't mind me commenting on all your video's but this was great seeing as how all the races are standardized with Grid (which I didn't know) but in the end you saying you use a G-13 (I have one gathering dust) made my heart swoon, because with grid I can totally see how helpful that peripheral is. I initially considered using grid layout for its intuitiveness, but found it was difficult to adapt to the change in basic commands (attack, move, build, etc). Now after playing for so long using memorized standard hotkeys, it'll probably even harder to switch to grid. There's definite value in starting out with that, however.

Hi mate. I'd been hoping that there was a grid keys option to SC2 so that I can customise my G13 for all 3 races without needing to change every single hotkey. The only problem I'm finding now, is that there's simply not enough keys on the G13 to cover all the command panel and 1-5 (+ctrl/shift) for control groups.
Just wondering if you could put a link to your G13 profile or a screenshot of what you have the bindings set to?

i can see the usefulness of the grid option. but its sort of less intuitive for beginners (which this vid is targetted at). A is for attack, P is for patrol, etc.

i find it hard to move my camera with my mouse so i'm using my arrow keys wich makes it hard to use hotkeys

..and increse its speed and turn off mousewheel-zoom (avoids accidently using that of-no-use-zoom) - i use that only even on large maps

@bermagic turn up screen edge scroll speed, or adjust so that its comfortable.

@bermagic Try altering your speed for the scroll. If it's too fast, it's hard to center it on something, it if is too slow, you will take forever to get to a spot. Play around with the speed until you are comfortable with something.

@bermagic you could always set up your function keys to move to important parts of the map...ie your base and expansions and your opponents bases...by default I believe they start at f4 and go up from there..to set simply press contol and the f key you would like to set ...hope this helps.

This is rly useful but kind of late for me. :( I already mastered all the Protoss hotkeys and it'll probably screw up my game. And yes, the attack key would mess me up rly badly.

I am a lefty but only when it comes to eating, playing pool, holding a Que stick, and using a computer mouse. What option do I use to have at least many keys on the right, or central. Plz do tell and thank you.

It's worth knowing that if you use a keyboard layout that is not QWERTY (I use Dvorak and many people in the world use AZERTY) Grid will map properly to the changes in layout, whereas Standard wont. Which is another plus for using Grid.
Of course it wouldn't be a problem if Blizzard would just let us change the damn key mapping.

The grid system rocks. Someone had to create a mod to do the same thing back in Company of Heroes. Glad to see Blizzard has it easily available as an option.

I hope you don't mind me commenting on all your video's but this was great seeing as how all the races are standardized with Grid (which I didn't know) but in the end you saying you use a G-13 (I have one gathering dust) made my heart swoon, because with grid I can totally see how helpful that peripheral is.
