Incredible - first heard him in person in Munich in summer of 1966 and was enthralled with his voice and totally devastated to learn of his death just a couple of months later - what a loss for the world.
@eurydike Es verdad que FW lamentablemente murio demasiado joven y no pudo desarrollar sus maravillosas cualidades. De cualquier manera tiene un lugar exclusivo al lado de ellos.
How I love the way he accidently mixes the words, producing the phrase "Sollst du mir sagen nur das eine du deine mir gibst" without curtailing the musical line of its legato. Great.
Two weeks away from a Met debut and what would have surely followed, he died in an accident at a German hunting lodge. One of the three or four splendid tenor voices of the century and he was lost so young.
I have a live recording of La Traviata with Fritz and Teresa Stratas which I treasure. Hearing him singing "Deh Meie Spiriti Bollenti" in Italian is just one of the many highlights of that recording.
Originally written for Jan Kiepura, and sung by him in the film of the same name, it was a great favourite with British tenors in the 1930s, among whom it was recorded by Heddle Nash, Tom Burke, Frank Titterton and others.

@eurydike Es cierto voz clara, hermosa y una irremediable perdida, junto con Kraus y Pavarotti. Descansen en paz.

OMG that pianissimo at 1.50-ish .... Ravishing. The forte passges likewise. Fritz goes straight to the heart, every time.
