It's from ziegfeld Follies. They were GREAT! but have to say: Gene had troubles in order to accomplish in the third sequence. But I think even Baryshnikov or Michael Jackson would do the same. Fred was PERFECT.
We do still have talent like this but there is no longer a market for such talent. We seem to prefer the talentless, illiterate five minute wonders that dominate the multitude of mindless, boring TV channels.
Why people go down on magnificence with time? What does the future reserve for us? The best artists were 50 years ago, in 2060 we're going to have hats performing, cause they're going to be good as the future human beings. Maybe there is a down of the crafts and a rise of the artificial technology, maybe our era is the era of heartless and spiritless.
Wish we still had talent like this. i;m sure there is talent out there only there is nt enough time to culitivate it and the big guns want turnover and profit more than Sam Goldwyn type pride !"
Fred Astaire choreographed that sequence (while Gene Kelly choreographed the first two sequences.)
It's amazing how talented he was to come up with a routine like that and how talented Gene Kelly was to perform it as flawlessly as the choreographer.
let today put that in their literary pipes and smoke it?? no one, absolutely no one has the talent of these men. Michael Jackson had the talent , and told us he took much from them. Even though I I have been a michael jackson fan... he evidently did not have what they had cause they stayed clean. God rest M. jackson, and the Kelly, and Astaire.
Astaire and Kelly (5'7"or 8") had different builds but weighed the same, Astaire,140 (5'9") would do anything to "knock off five pounds" before filming. On Singing in the Rain, (Gene age 40) Donald O'Conner said, "I weighed 118, Gene was 145." Kelly stated he "arrived in Hollywood twenty pounds overweight and strong as an ox," after his long cross country Honeymoon car trip following the run of Pal Joey. He quickly knocked off 20 pounds to get back into fighting trim 138-140.
It's refreshing to watch a video of two masters in their craft without the whole "I like X better than Y" bullshit comments. These two were part of a handful of amazing talent that could sing, dance, and act -- sometimes simultaneously.
This is one of those rare gems where you sit back and simply marvel instead of comparing and contrasting.
Fred was always considered the best dancer but I truly believe Gene was just as good as Fred. They both could sing as well!

Such a pity no actor in Hollywood today can dance like that.
