my highschool team tried something like this in the semi final state playoffs. only the kicker was on the field and they threw his kicking shoe on about 5 yards from the side line he went over and put it on and everyone else got set on the ball once he had the kicking shoe on they snapped the ball and threw it to him in the end-zone. it was pretty awesome.

This is a legal play. The "Substitution to Deceive" rule states that all 11 players involved in a play must come out to the middle of the field at some point before the snap. Basically, all of the offensive players have to participate in the huddle, which was the case here. It WOULD be illegal if the receiver had come on from the sideline without breaking the huddle with the rest of the team.

The defense is responsible for accounting for all players that break the offensive huddle.
