I shot a lovely fox on Saturday, good 10kgs nice winter coat using 264 that is 6.5x57mm Mauser. He was sprinting down hill and had just crossed a forestry road when I nailed him. Found him lay in the snow, after he had skidded a good one and half meters! Great shot, instant death! In the UK, we are advised to use .222, .223 or 22-250 on Fox. .22 RF to be used on rabbit or Hare (Jack Rabbit). In Scotland you can use a .222 ect with 50gr + projectile on Roe Deer but not in England!

I would never use .22LR on fox. It simply is not powerful enough unless you're shooting at very close range. The minimum I would use is .17 HMR.

As a serious comment to your point, Madtyper, it's an unfortunate fact of life that anything classed as vermin has to be controlled. The reason for this is they will continue to breed around a food source until that is exhausted and they starve to death, or their numbers get so high that mother nature steps in and cuts the numbers with disease.

Your options are now poisoning or hunting. The latter is more humane with less envirmental impact. Vast majority of hunters use the meat or re-introduce into the food chain, taking rabbits as an example - no different from an animal takin them in the first place, but keeping pop healthy.
