Btw, the cover art of his Jazz Lp's on vinyl - (Previn ) represent perhaps the highwater mark of voluptuous and stunning females on album covers. Scandinavian type beauties that...( in some ways ).. transcend the music.
@radiokid2 I wouldn't say "carves up" at all but he keeps up with Oscar very well. People may not realize that Peterson started out as a classically trained pianist who then switched to Jazz.
I know...when I 19, I went to Oscars jazz school in Toronto. He and Ray and Thigpen were there teaching too. Oscar partially studied with his sister, who was a great classical pianist. Some family!
Hi friends, you are invited to enjoy a Beautiful free online master class on the playing of Oscar Peterson. You will LOVE this! Type in "Dave Frank" Oscar on YT.
Topics include Oscar's runs, arrangement techniques, voicing, and much more.
I think people forget that Andre Previn was one of the best pianists when it came to playing both jazz and classical. It's nice to see him swing with Oscar. If you want to see something even more astounding, check out Oscar playing with Michel Legrand on Watch What Happens.
I saw this for the 1st time 25 years ago & it still knocks me out. The cooperation & dialogue is so rich because both these men are open just about ANYTHING musically.
two of the best jazz pianists ever. If you want to hear something crazy listen to previn play jeepers kreepers. gives me arthritis just listening to it.
André Previn is a big Oscar's fan, and sometimes he sounds exactly like Oscar (that's impossible for all the other humans like me). I really enjoyed when Oscar started playing the boogie riff (he used to play boogie in the forties).
PD to hawickbod: The cellist's name was Jacqueline du Pré, and his husband was the argentinian pianist Daniel Barenboim.
This video is every bit as wonderful as when I heard it live almost 30 years ago long before everyone had a VCR. I'm grateful to find it here & experience it all again. What a high peak of musical excellence not to mention clearly a warm friendship between rival Jazz pianists. What a joy!
I saw this on BBC live originally and remember sitting with my jaw in the permanent "down" position.
It was just months before I went to my first (of many around the world) solo concert of O.P. and I've always admired A.P. also (and his late wife cellist Katherine Dupre)for his benign personality, musicianship and the ability to
embrace all genres.
The hug at the end is surely a true and sincere expression of love between two greats: you can't act that-the music carries through!
Of course OP was a better Jazz Piano player than AP but he was always the gentleman and always took care not to "show up" any other piano player he played with.
wow, how young they both were...gosh never saw oscar before he died :( andre was the conductor of the pittsburgh symphony for years, when I was young, where I live, but I had no idea of his jazz side, piano side, composition/improvisation side... what a genius, literaly too I find out. This was VERY sweet, nice clip.. the hug made it in the end.. thank you so much.
AGGGHHH! WHAT HAPPENED to the other 5 or so WONDERFUL videos of Oscar and Andre together???
Were you forced to remove them? If so, do you know WHERE I could get them please? Thanks for posting them and I am so disappointed they are no longer there.
Could you possibly just put them on again, if only for a small time?
Is there a way I can get a hold of this video with good audio or likewise? Is there a DVD of this? I've grown very attached to this clip and wish there was something I could buy for keepsakes. Thanks
Oh no, I just realise that the other parts of the Peterson & Previn video are gone, there were about 5 or so. Were you forced to take them off? I'm really sad they are gone.... Anyway thanks for showing them that long... Yours, Jan
Ahh!! Where did the other videos of this concert go? Grr, is viacom trying to kerb inspiration or something??? It's not like anyone is making money off of this stuff because nobodies buying old jazz concert vids!
Previn is good, but Oscar sounds like a teacher. He is more inventive, and his sense of rhythm and time is perfect. Previn showed trouble in maintain the correct tempo. Oscar sounds like a clock, extremely precise. But they are all good players.
Listen to the duel between Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock also... yeah!!!!
I never thought I would see this again. I remember being stuck to the TV when this segment ran about a hundred years ago. Previn had a TV show at the time. What a treat to see it again. I was especially impressed with the Boogie Woogie duet. Thanks so much for the post.
Like you, I saw this a long time ago and also thought I would never see it again. Being a frustrated piano player, (i.e., I cannot make my left hand do something different from my right hand. . . well to see my #2 and #3 favorite piano players togethe is beyond words. Steve

Very inspiring!
