@WorshipBassist - How much? I just raised it to be as high as I could under the B without the pickup hitting the string. Then I adjusted the rest of the pickup to balance out sound wise with the other strings.
@BassGuitarMag Having seen you reviewed the Jazz version of this for Bass Emporium how much difference in the B string did you feel the bridge pickup in the Jazz made? I guess I always though a bridge pickup (or sweet spot in the Stingrays case) was essential for a good B string but these clips are making me question that.... sounds great!
Thanks so much for your dedication, Ed! Are these the same strings that Fender puts on the bass, or have you changed them out for your favorites? By the way, what kind of flats would you recommend on this 5 for the correct tension and tone in the B and even tone across the strings [acknowledging that we are all going to have to find our favorites]?
@BassGuitarMag S.I.T.'s Power Wounds also sound fantastic on this bass! Nice deep growly sound... But I also had a jazz pickup installed at the bridge which gives it more punch and attack!
@IAmSuperPerfect - P = split coil pickup, fatter neck, chunky, thick tone. J = slimmer neck, 2 singles coil pickups, more tone options, more articulate. The body shapes are also slightly different.
Bass Whisperer is the man. Always good vids and shuts people up with facts and intelligent remarks. Love a guy on YouTube that can stop all the haters.
I wonder if the B string would speak even better if the split coil was reversed. Or even crazier, a double split coil, with the magnet for the B string in the same area as the D and G coils.
Have you had a chance to review any other Yamaha's? I got lucky and found a BB2005. I don't think they make them anymore. It's really nice, the neck feels really good and fast. The electronics are pretty versitle too, I could get some bright and dark tones out of it. I had a chance to pick up an Ibanez SR1005 but I got a real good deal on it. Think I made the right choice Ed?
Yamaha makes nice stuff. I recently reviewed their new Billy Sheehan bass, but didn't do a video. You can read it on my website thebasswhisperer(dot)com. Did you make the right choice? I can't answer that for you. Do you like the bass? Then yes.
Nice! I played one myself, only it didn't have the soapbar pickup in it. They guy that owned it was doing work on it here and there. I have small hands so it was a bit discouraging at first, but I got use to it. With proper posture even someone with small hands can play a bass with a huge neck.
Hard to say. It depends on the gig, but my workload has been very 4 string oriented lately. But this particular bass is the 5 string I use when I want to "sneak" one into a roots gig.
All I can say is - this bass has become an indispensable member of my bass family. I use it ALOT! I take it on the road with me often, next week - it'll be on some dates with rock legend Eric Burdon
The overall sound is great. "Quite killer indeed!" Have been shopping/playing new P, J, & MM 4 stringers, and I think I've gotten too comfortable w/ 5 strings; this particular passive 5-stringer is making a strong case for itself.
I like the 34" scale concept for this bass and if Ed says the B string works at this length, I guess it does! Thanks for the reviews, I want to get my hands on one of these as soon as I can.
You know I sure wish I knew this was coming out when I ordered and received my US 62 reissue jazz back in April, (Its currently in the shop for warranty work on the neck already) Id have picked up one of these in a heartbeat and saved myself a couple hundred bucks! Nice job on both P5 vids Ed! I own most of your instructional books and youve been an inspiration of mine for along time!!
Still sounds sloppy and unfocused to me... as do all Fender P-basses.

@bwj8 - I have found the stock Fender strings worked best on this bass, but I also really liked the D'Addario Chrome flats.

Out of curiosity, have you ever played an American Fender Deluxe Precision 5 string? If so how powerful is the soapbar pickup at the bridge?
mistyeyesarecrying 2 years ago
I did a long time ago. The soapbar is powerful, but it balances pretty well with the P. The preamp is okay too.

how often do you use your 5 stringed basses
compare to 4 stringed basses...?
thanks.

The Fender Precision Bass just simply Rules! When Leo invented it he sure got it right.

The first precision bass was the tele-style bass in '51, and this one came later.

Those Phil Jones amps are nice and tight but, to my ears, they don't have quite the deep "feel it in your gut" bass that a 15" speaker has.
