  • Very very impressive. Funny how the comments don't recognize this as a great amount of work

  • heath ledger!!!

  • This is the first TED talk I've quit halfway through. I saw an amusing webtoy, but nothing more. He thinks he's going to get reliable data from BLOGS? Okay, the subjects don't know they're being "interviewed", but they know full well they're being READ, and the content of their "personal" blogs has more to do with keeping an audience they enjoy than actually baring their souls. This data might have some sociological significance, but not as a picture of the emotional state of the web.

  • UH UH UH UH UH UH LEARN TO PUBLIC SPEAK

  • I want his laptop...

  • He had an art exhibit in Burlington VT where I saw him. The same things he explained at TED applied to his art show.

  • G K Chesterton Quote -

It is the one great weakness of journalism as a picture of our modern existence, that it must be a picture made up entirely of exceptions. We announce on flaring posters that a man has fallen off a scaffolding. We do not announce on flaring posters that a man has not fallen off a scaffolding. Yet this latter fact is fundamentally more exciting, as indicating that that moving tower of terror and mystery, a man, is still aboard upon the earth.

  • G K Chesterton Quote contd 1...

That the man has not fallen off a scaffolding is really more sensational; and it is also some thousand times more common. But journalism cannot reasonably be expected thus to insist upon the permanent miracles. Busy editors cannot be expected to put on their posters, "Mr. Wilkinson Still Safe," or "Mr. Jones, of Worthing, Not Dead Yet." They cannot announce the happiness of mankind at all.

  • G K Chesterton Quote contd 2.

They cannot describe all the forks that are not stolen, or all the marriages that are not judiciously dissolved. Hence the complex picture they give of life is of necessity fallacious; they can only represent what is unusual. However democratic they may be, they are only concerned with the minority.

  • @Bhairaviji Great quote. Thanks for sharing

  • The picture looks exactly like universe: 75% of dark matter and tiny spots of bright elements

  • 6:56 "The world is feeling used at 3.3x the normal level." LOL!

  • Amazing!

  • HarcourtMarketing IS indeed an asshole! Sometimes 'bad' is BAD! So hey mthrfkrs, callin a spade a spade ain't bad in this case. History has proven that cliches are mostly true as is the word of dozens of peeps! Remember, one life to live or give and that's it.

  • I feel rainy

  • THis is very intresting. Nice speaker. Pretty deep.

  • "I feel fine"

  • not in TED level...

  • agreed. Too much art and not enough science.

  • Can a wise person define the difference between art and science?

  • Very easily. They pursue different goals.

  • Very ART!

  • yep, worldwide tag cloud. Get the tin foil hats ready

  • This is an example of what crystal meth does to a person.

  • oh so i guess you can do better... grow up you..

  • Bravo! Nice nice Work! Very inspiring. Was it made with the help of Processing-Language?

  • Shame its a biast view of the world when it should be a representation of the connected world!

  • This guy has a really noble intention in this that isn't aimed to spy or make people feel uncomfortable. This seems to be a really valuable tool in looking at how people express their feelings, and how people describe their view of the world around them.

  • this is just how computer define...feels..:), how ur left brain define ur right brain...

  • The universe of information we're creating is really amazing.

  • I have to admit it's an amazing concept. But, I'm a little scared. The thought of someone who can freely access my "universe" seems rather invasive.

  • i wouldnt worry... if youre worried about something that invasive, dont blog anything you dont want to be known... lol

  • Cool! But this is not Dr. Zachary Smith!

    Thanks'!

  • What exactly is the difference to a simple searching engine?

  • more than 25 words on the homepage

  • I just can not believe how smart this concept is...wow

    I feel amazed

  • Wonderful!

  • "I Feel like im being spyed on"

  • second!

  • err, no-one forces you to post these things on your blog

  • great program, i'll be playing lots of Universe whenever i have the time.. Many thanks to Jonathan Harris for making this possible. :)

  • Whao

  • it's pretty cool! so fantastic

  • Wow you could play with this for hours!

  • Oh My God, it's full of stars

  • lol, mouns dancing lol!! nice...

  • Great programmer!

  • BRAVO! Everyone, this is a MUST WATCH! You can't even guess this guy's technological brilliance, USING THE INTERNET to show us OUR OWN UNIVERSE! must see!

Thanks so much! I'll be sharing this one!

    ka, Dingaroo Press

  • Not too different then RSS.

  • "Fire is cool!"

  • This is a very important concept for discussion. The more that everyone is able to see how the new tools like the ones Jonathan Harris has been creating are an important balancing point to help us all deal with the universal desire each of us has for wanting our individual stories told to be told to each other.

How can you give everyone a voice, and then not have it all turn to white noise? People are chatting about this idea at the Imagining the Tenth Dimension live chat window today.

  • Very cool stuff!

  • Is the program ready for use?

  • Yes. At universe[dot]daylife[dot]com

    :)

  • I could imagine some people objecting to this kind of organization of their life. Maybe they can opt out or not live an online life? Haha! Whatever this might become in the end of its development, it might make some individuals feel exposed when someone else can search directly for their feelings.

  • ...Also from a user's perspective, couldn't I get addicted? Where I'd track the movement of feelings in my group of friends instead of actually being a part of those relationships? I could see the wave of people who might be addicted to social knowledge (Wikipedia) or social Vlogs (YouTube) taking this to an extreme maybe...

  • ...Then again we've already consented to allowing anyone to search out our online "life". His results were made possible by public data. When he showed off Universe it made me think of the emerging role of APIs and meta tags and Photosynth as well. We're now accelerating the development of "finding exactly what we want" apps by contributing individually...

  • ...And besides, the elegance that these presenters bring is another piece of the story. These kinds of spatial representations are what my friends never cease to hear from me and all the while I knew it would become the way to show globally gathered, disparate data.

    I love TED.

  • I love the secrets of our man-made universe
