This is not a Gauss rifle. This is a coil gun. Gauss rifles use momentum passed from atoms colliding (or objects such as metal balls) and passing momentum to the final ball. The energy has no where to go and pushes the ball forward. There is no loss of force. Coil guns use an electric current passed through the wire (shown in his diagram) to pull the object forward (Lorentz forces I believe). Multi coil design, with solid state IGBT switches would be a lot more powerful

Either way, the Human Race has pretty low technology for 500 years in the future. Well, one way or another, by definition, it's a gauss pistol. The two different kind of magnetic accelerators being Railguns and Coil guns. Yes. It's a coil gun. If he re-wired the coil portion to be parallel to the direction he intends to shoot, it will greatly increase his muzzle velocity.

Use a metal 4.5/ 5/ 6mm magnetic ballbearing after it has been polished also using a lighter projectile will up the fps a lot. 2.2 J is one hell of a lot of power :) very impressive.

Well duh. 1J airsoft gun to face leaves a bitchy welt on you using something weighing 0.2 - 0.30 grams usually. 2.2J with metal is going to embed itself in your skin. I would compare them with the speeds and energy from one of the smallest acceptible calibers, .22LR, on wikipedia. A 40g load with .22LR yields 141 joules and 1080FPS, and that is not always lethal.

Still, I hope there's potential for a really powerful gauss gun to be built. That'd be thoroughly sweet.

You evidently didn't pay attention long enough to bother picking up concepts like inertia in what passed for your physics education. The best muzzle energy available in a .17 round (I believe that's what you'r grasping for) is 245 foot-pounds. .50 BMG carries 2,000 foot-pounds. At the lowest power loads. The .50 BMG is larger, sure, but there's a -huge- amount of inertia for the atmosphere to bleed off. Pick your physics before you start slinging ignorance.

i doubt it... your bullets definitely move faster than 65 fps but his bullets are much heavier than the bullets you use, so it would probably hurt much more to be shot with his gun. My gun that shoots at 275 fps cant break glass and can only pierce a coke can if i turn it on automatic and blast the fuck out of the can over and over again.
