why do you trim hoofs? Don't cows have a natural way of dealing with their hoofs growing longer than usual?

excuse the name i am using. but i have never seen this done with a power tool, i've helped a guy i know he trims dairy cattle by hand. we would put out 150 head a day. how much more do you get the way you do it?
