Actually the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jackson Browne was an original member, recorded this in 1967 I think, but TR's version is a version many refer to.

I grew up listening to Tom and this song. Will always love it. but it just doesn't work for me, 2 sec of song then 5 sec of down load. this is one of the few Utube doing this thx Utube

Tom Rush sings "all the things that I forgot to do" leaves out the "for you"

which changes the song completely.

Jackson wrote it as a teenager, then it was covered by Nico. I am not aware that it was written for Tom, specifically. Could be, maybe. In any case, I do like his rendering!
