  • can a fuel pump gradually be going bad? I can here the pump humm when turning the key, and car will fire up and run for a minute or two then die. It died on me last week with the same symptoms. Went back in the morning and it started and drove it home fine. Its ran fine this week with maybe 75 miles driven. This will be the 3rd airtex pump in 5 years. Are these pumps only good for there 1 year warentee? Thanks for your help.

  • @dolfangrego If you suspect the pump then I would advise checking the fuel pressure to make sure that's whats causing the problem. First find out what is causing the problem before you start replacing parts.

  • One tip i found, use higher octane fuel, there's less fuel waste bc it doesn't spark knock. On my 99 accord, i get about 28 with 89 octane. with 91 or 93, i get roughly 35-37 mpg. A little extra money can save you a lot in the end.

  • @LazySniper You might want to watch the video that I did on Octane ratings as I don't necessarily subscribe to your theory, I won't disagree with your results however.

  • @EricTheCarGuy well see i though it was just driving conditions. But i ran 89 and drove aggressively an got around 20 mpg. Did the same this with 91 octane and got 28 mpg. then again some cars run better on premium than others or it could be the ethanol in the gas.

  • @LazySniper If you watched the video you would see that octane is actually a rating of the fuels resistance to burning, the higher the compression ration the higher octane you would need, it's not necessary on lower compression engines. I think many people are under the false impression that higher octane is better gas but that is not the case.

  • @EricTheCarGuy This I know, but I always did some experimenting if the higher resistance for the gas to take a spark would actually make a difference. 91 octane gave me the least spark knock (as it should), and slightly better gas mileage. This is just my two cents in the piggy bank, but i don't expect it to be accepted.

  • @LazySniper I respect and appreciate your opinion but in theory if the engine runs at a low compression ratio high octane is not required. If you have spark knock in an engine that is designed to run on low octane I would say you have a performance issue that should be addressed and it's not the fault of the gas, I would start by checking the ignition timing.

  • haha. ya slowing down is one way!

another way is trying to keep your momentum up.. decelerating, or accelerating constantly (like city driving), could burn more fuel quicker. if youre already going 60mph on a highway, keep that momentum up.

another is weight! put your car on a diet! less weight, less fuel the car's gotta burn to get the car moving.

I know you know that Eric, but im posting this for viewers :)

  • @plkj13 And I appreciate your input and your comment, thanks.

  • How exactly do you "slow down" im having trouble.

  • @ZzSmacKyzZ Try listening to classical music. :)

  • maintain your car. make sure the lockup works, the oil is changed regularly, good spark plug wires, good plugs, clean air-cleaner, tires inflated properly, and dont buy more vehicle than you need. i drive an 91 cavalier with a 2.2L tbi 4 cylinder, it is a cheap simple car to maintain and gets close to 30 MPG on the highway. its also paid for in full. there is more to saving money than just gas mileage. also overall cost of ownership which an old cavalier has a very, very low cost of ownership

  • @ad356 Well put, thanks for the comment.

  • On vehicles with fuel injection and manual transmission... Use the engine brake.

When doing so it cuts fuel supply to the engine which saves a little as well.

And obviously, don't accelerate needlessly. And don't race between stoplights, they aren't going to turn green faster just because you arrive faster.

But what wastes the most fuel of all is taking the car on a 1 mile trip to the store etc. Starting a car (especially when cold) is the biggest waste of all.

    Use a bicycle for that!

  • @RealCadde Excellent points, thanks for your comment.

  • I have a Mercedes-Benz E350 diesel, and I get 48

  • @jamesmoocn You got me beat on that one. Thanks for the comment.

  • TECHNO WIZZARD did you know with a electronic fuel injection system when the revs go up the amount of fuel injected is more! So keep the revs down to safe fuel!!!! With a carburator system its a bit different, because you can add more fuel at low revs very easily. With a carb 2 stage carb its easy business to change your nozzles of the 1st stage to a bit smaller nozzle so you dont soak it all the way.

The fun part for the racers is to have a huge size nozzle in the 2nd stage thats the stuff!!!

  • Safe gas by not buying gas! Dont waste gas on fun rides into town! Only use the car when really nescesary! When you drive along the road shift gears when you reach 2000 rpm to the next higher gear. Leave the gear in the higher gear when going around a roundabout. Check out before the roundabout if its free so you dont need to brake. Dont unnescasarilly accelerate or brake! Drive 70 mph where you are where the speed limit is 80mph. Pump up your tires a bit harder. etc etc

  • @hgortermarof All great tips, thanks for the comment.

  • That's so true! My car's best economical speed is betwenn 70-100 km/h, drinking about 5 liters/100 km.

  • Best way to save money on gas is to get a bicycle. Not only will you save a decent chunk of change and help reduce carbon emissions, but also get yourselves into better shape. Then maybe the folks on Top Gear will stop thinking of use as the fat people country.

  • @silky19kilo But we are the 'fat people country'. BTW I ride my bike every morning now.

  • If you want to save money on petrol. Get a 1.0 car and drive it at around 40-50mph. I can get around 500miles out of a full tank. Which would cost like 70euro to fill from empty. I can use 5th gear aswel at 20mph minimum. Fuck all the bullshit about wind and weight.

  • Actually, this is a common misconception. Traveling at higher speeds saves gas. Think about it. The faster a car goes, the more momentum it builds up. Because of the higher rate of momentum, the engine needs less power to increase speed. Although, speed usually doesn't matter in the first place. Most modern day cars are designed to run at the lowest RPM's possible.

  • @pspfanboy100 Depends on your rpm. That's why I like 5 speeds.

  • @pspfanboy100 Your forgetting about wind resistance, the faster you go the higher the load the engine needs to work against to maintain a given speed. By design most vehicles are most efficient at 55-70mph.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

But Eric, cars use very little power to sustain speed even at highway speeds, its the gearing thats more important I would argue

  • @pspfanboy100 Get some kind of ODBII scanner that can read instantaneous mpg and you'll realize how wrong you are. Go above 60 mpg and MPG starts to drop quickly due to wind resistance and high RPMs. For maximum fuel efficiency, stay at the bottom RPM range of your highest gear.

  • @munky000527 That's where areodynamics come into play. Of course wind resistance is going to reduce gas mileage.........only if you drive a bus. Why do you think a car is more fuel efficient than an SUV, even if they both use the same powertrain. Obviously because the SUV has poor areodynamics and the car can "cut" through the air easier.

  • @pspfanboy100 You're wrong. Just get an ODBII scanner and you'll see.

  • @munky000527 Okay, I just explained EXACTLY what YOU said and you're saying I'm wrong? I guess that means you're wrong too.

  • @pspfanboy100 "Of course wind resistance is going to reduce gas mileage.........only if you drive a bus." No, wind resistance reduces gas mileage considerably in ANY car. It is exponential.

  • @munky000527 You obviously don't understand what sarcasm is.......

  • That's awesome. I get my doors blown off by trucks with 32" tires on a daily basis then I hear them whining about how much it costs to fill their tank.

  • Keep your tires inflated, use an injector cleaner fuel additive once a year, go for the fancy spark plugs, lose the roof rack, and slow down!

  • Bwahahaha! Good one......

  • Stay Dirty! xD

  • I know what I am talking about when I say worn or broken steering parts can waste gas. Because on my Passenger side my Idler Arm was so broken it lean the whole tire to the outside and I was driving like that for 3 months and I have 0mm tread on the outside of it and the inner tire of my passenger side is still good. I already fix my idler arm for 4 months now and my tire on the passenger side still not pop at all with no tread on the outside at all it completely down to the warning sign.

  • Here is my opinion. REPLACE ALL WORE OUT PARTS. Everything that sense or uses gas REPLACE THEM. LIKE: Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Oxygen Sensor, spark plug to IRIDUM and don't use Platinum, fuel injector, catalytic converter, muffler, use syntetic oil like AMZOIL, and a very good oil filter, cap and rotor on the distributor, spark plug wires to a better brand, even worn out steering parts can waste gas too because if any steering part break it will cause uneven wear in the tire itself.

  • @MileyCyrus192 That seems a bit excessive to me but have fun with your car.

  • @EricTheCarGuy true I will have fun with three of my cars. My truck have performance parts. my other 2 cars also have performance parts.

  • @MileyCyrus192 just but a new car....

  • Cruise control will help on a flat highway, but controlled driving with your foot will win out on a hilly highway - the cruise keeps a steady speed up hills, while you can moderate to save fuel. Also check tires and remove junk from the trunk

  • @TR4zest Excellent points, thanks for your input.

  • 089089 miles?? really good moment to video that on 65 mph x)

  • Hey Eric,

If you ever come across it, can you please make a video on removing broken bolts/studs (exhaust, head, intake, whatever?) Such a useful skill to have!

  • @XStaticweb1 I try to avoid such a situation to be honest but should the opportunity arise I'll do what I can to make a video for you.

  • Funny but True!

  • Going slow doesn't always help, I dive a big boat of a car, with a 5.0 302 v8..and a weight of 5,230 pounds.

  • @The18Jake I bet if you drove it slower you would get better mileage, unless you can defy the laws of physics. Thanks for the comment.

  • @The18Jake

Sure it does, my Jeep weighs 4300 pounds, 1k less then your vehicle, but my engine is a lot bigger, 360Cubic inches, 5.9 Liter magnum which are known for horrible gas mileage.... if you have a onboard computer that gives you realtime MPG go test it.. I bet you, you will get 25% better gas mileage at 55mph, vs 70mph... I know i do.

  • @1ownjoo2 mine is a 1984 lincoln towncar..there is not on-board computer really. it has a bad fuel pump,so that doesn't help much on gas,and either way it's roughly supposed to be getting 18 city and 24 highway.(supposedly haha) 20$ fills it halfway, when its on empty, and it doesn't even last me 4 days.

  • @The18Jake

Well if it doesnt have a computer then calculate the MPG from the tank, but i garuntee you, you will get 10-25% better gas mileage at a a steady 55-65mph, vs 75mph on a highway or freeway.

$25 is how much it takes to fill my tank half way, but then empty to half isnt exactly half a tank for a Grand Cherokee ZJ half a tank is more around 9 gallons, and half to full is around 13 or 14 gallons. Takes about $110 to fill my tank up, and i get 13 city and 20 highway (16 if i go 75)

  • @The18Jake thats your problem lol

  • @Well my point is that driving slow wouldn't save gas for me lol

  • There was a reason why the 55MPH limit was imposed back in the day....

  • @RandallFlaggNY Yeah because at that time, 55mph would mean a low rpm in the highest gear which means the fastest speed with the least gas wasted.

  • @joesimmons90 Gearing has little to do with it. If I remember correctly that wind resistance increases with the cube of speed. Doing 55 instead of 75 means (20*20*20) less wind resistance.

My math may be off though.

  • @RandallFlaggNY I'm not really talking about the gears themselves saving gas, but rather the higher the RPM is, the more gas is being used. If you can get it into the highest gear, and be at a low RPM, you'll be good.

  • You like to know how i safe gas it easy as DON'T drive at all 0 km's 0 gas cost :-)

  • @grimreaperws Good point.

  • @grimreaperws

Problem is i dont not want to drive, i like to get outside and do stuff, and taking a walk or riding a bike isnt exactly what i want to do... Gas prices the way they are right now, is taking the freedom away from so many people... I cant even drive to tak a 2 days vacation at a beach 3 states down without having to put asside $400 for gas... Its stupid

  • @grimreaperws

Thats why i think people who are in their 40's and 50's are lucky they grew up the way they did... back when gas was so cheap you wouldnt even think about it... They could do whatever they wanted when they were young.... Im 24 and cant do anything because of gas and food prices.

  • @1ownjoo2 thats true there mate. Wish i was back them days :)

  • Dont forget to use cruise control also

  • @1ownjoo2 Great suggestion.

  • Eric is right slow the f down people.... When driving on the freeway the speed limit is 65mph and yet people go 75-80mph all the time... I drive a big 5.9 liter V8 Jeep, if i go 65mph i get 20mpg, if i go 75mph i get 16... Big difference when your driving long distances

  • @EricTheCarGuy - Some things that I have done while hyper miling - paying attention to boost vs vacuum. Paying attention to high vacuum vs low. Cruise control. Shift points. Cleaning the car of unceccessary STUFF. Jack, just enough tools, AAA card. Full sized spare has been replaced with a doughnut - that has had the tire replaced with a suitable Z rated motorcycle tire. 3/4 less weight and usable at 150+ mph. Good video!

  • @EricTheCarGuy I was expecting to see a video with a vacuum gauge ala hyper miling style'ee. My 2.3L Mazda Mx6 Turbo has always gotten higher gas mileage than my 2.2 Camry simply because of a vacuum gauge and using it correctly - when I was going for mileage. Turbocharged cars have always been the answer to efficiency. It's a shame that they arent more prevalent like in Europe - diesels even. The auto manufacturers have the average consumer so misinformed about forced induction.

  • @ProjectCarTV Great comments but my point with this was simplicity, sometimes simple is good.

  • Great short video and great tip...

  • @dandroz240 Thank you!

  • honda element?

  • @nextrider123 2003

  • @EricTheCarGuy r u capable of doing a vid on strut replacement in an acura integra?

  • my new civic has an eco meter i try to stay on 4/6 all the time.

also check tire pressures, short shift

  • @IIGrayfoxII Excellent tips, thanks for the comment.

  • Besides getting good gas mileage by slowing down, you are also saving your life, and that goes for all those people that txt and drive, is a txt so important to risk your life? Just slow down and pull over when you txt!

  • @SingleCamFTW I cover the text thing in Trippin With ETCG. Thanks for the comment.

  • Yes slow down...and if more people drove cars with a standard transmission. I daily drive a Mitsu 3000GT (heavy car for a coupe). Without A/C running I get 28 mpg...with A/C use 25 mpg.

How? Gentle acceleration, coast as much as possible, minimize braking, get into higher gears ASAP without lugging the engine, etc...just common sense which is not too common these days.

Best I ever did on a tank was 470 miles which was nearly 29 mpg and this is NOT an economy car.

  • @texan176 I've actually found that not to be the case in all instances, I used to have a 91 Integra that was a stick and a 90 that was an automatic, the automatic actually got better mileage, not sure exactly why but it did. But I agree that it is all in how you drive. Thanks for the comment.

  • dont you get more MPG on highway because you go faster? and it takes less momentum to keep your car going? idk..

  • Yes you do get better mileage while on the highway and going faster but air resistance acts on the car more and more as you go faster and so it eventually starts decreasing your mileage as you speed up. It all depends on the car itself, but usually between 50-65 mph are the sweet spots.

  • @FromTheInside131 It's true, in fact the engineers design the car to run efficiently at that speed range. Thanks for the comment.

  • @Davidsfarmlives Yes but the more you push on the pedal the more gas you use, guess that's why the call it the 'gas pedal'. I'm not trying to be sarcastic but it's true. Thanks for the comment.

  • how not to save money on gas- move 12 miles away from work

  • @petergriffintubin1 I used to drive 25 each way myself, that sucked. Thanks for the comment.

  • speed costs money ... how fast do you want to go??

  • @EricTheCarGuy

haha better roads are you kidding me... UK the home of potholes, which considering the amount of cash our government gets from tax on fuel then road tax ontop, the roads sould all be as smooth as an F1 circuit almost all rear round.

  • @shizerproject I guess it's the same everywhere then because the roads around here are total crap and we too pay a lot in taxes to deal with that.

  • Yes, slow down! Been doing that for the past 6 months, set the cruise control at 90km/h and stay in the right lane! Takes me about 5-10 min more to get to work but I get at least 100 km more from a full tank! But gas is still too cheap, cause everybody else is flying by at 120km/h... taking it easy on starts saves a lot too!

  • @smokinghull It sure does, thanks for the comment.

  • Eric; while you are on the subject; why not do a veggie WVO conversion on a diesel some penurious cat drags in I think this would certainly compliment the theme & extend your viewership.

I'm contemplating doing this myself on a Sprinter 2.7 when one depreciates down to my price range lol

  • @Begbucks That would be cool especially since I would be learning on that one too. Perhaps at some point in the future, thanks for the suggestion.

  • i have been slowing down since gas price went up...lol

and when they passed you '' thats a buck right there....lol

keep your foot off the pedal too..............

  • I would.... but my food is literally mad of lead. Or at least thats the excuse I give =]

  • @colormydays Foot*

  • I drove from Oakland to L.A. going 55mph on Highway 5. My 2.4L Tacoma got over 450miles on one tank of gas. That's 30mpg. My EPA is 18/23. ERIC IS RIGHT!

  • @HJC73734 That's awesome.

  • BRILLIANT!

  • lol, nice tip!

  • oh and mine's a turbo. Somehow I save more gas I don't even know why after I installed the stock T25 Turbo. It was an SR20DE lol

  • @pinoyALLmotorEVOIXMR Believe it or not if your engine is more powerful it won't have to work as hard at maintaining speed.

  • @EricTheCarGuy so that's the reason why turbocharged cars save money? Like the new Volkswagen cars (Turbo diesel sedans) that have high MPG?

  • Me, I have stick 240sx. I can control my RPM >:)

  • Did you know that most gas station's charge like 10 to 20 cent per gallon extra to use a credit card instead of cash!!!!!!

  • @DAQUAN88 You lie!

  • @tyler361549 It is true. It is included in the gas price. But the people who pays using cash are are the ones getting ripped off for paying for the credit card fees.

  • @tyler361549 Trust me :(

  • @DAQUAN88 They have to post that somewhere if not it's false advertising.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Alot of gas station's dont have it posted or it is with super tiny print!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great tip, it's amazing how much gas you can waste speeding. If only I could get my wife to believe it :)

  • @praskieva Just wave your hand slowly in front of her face and say, "slow down and we can go out to dinner more" or whatever it is she likes to do. Think Obi wan kenobi when you do it.

  • Now there's some words of wisdom! Love it!! Lmao

  • @liveTwoFish Helps keep the cops away too.

  • Hahaha.. I love it... very simple and effective LOL

  • @axenz1 I like simple, thanks for the comment.

  • More ways to get more bang for you gas buck?

    1. Try to fuel up at the coolest part of the day. Liquid molecules are more compact at cooler temps.

    2. Keep your tank above 1/2. Gasoline evaporates faster then water & having as close to a full tank as possible leaves less air in the tank for fuel to evaporate. 3. If your can runs on 87 octane, don't waste your money on 89 or 91.

    4. Proper tire pressure.

    5. Avoid fueling at a station when the fuel truck is re-supplying the station.

  • @Michiganborn1969 I know all but the last one. What's so bad about filling up when the truck is re-supplying the station?

  • @choidj

Because when the truck fills the tanks, it stirs up sediment at the bottom of the tank

That sediment then gets into your gas tank, eventually clogging your fuel filter, fuel pump, and fuel injectors, leading to poor performance and gas mileage.

  • Comment removed

  • @choidj

Because of all the sediment that gets stirred up at the bottom of the gas stations tank, especially if it's an older gas station that hasn't changed out thire tanks in a while.

  • @Michiganborn1969 All pumping stations have corrected pumps. The pump meters the amount of fuel dispensed according to the ambient temps. It correlates the temp of the fuel and ambient temp to insure that you get what you pay for. They are accurate to within 1%. I agree with number 2. You skipped 3. 4 yes. 5 -- all pumping stations here in Canada have to be replaced every ten years and have very elaborate filtration systems. I have never seen sediment in my Jerry cans and I dirtbike a lot.

  • @nizmojoeblows

Yup, You got me on #3. I was on my mobile when I was making that comment & got a call right in the middle of the comment & I think it screwed me up. As far as #1. it's not so much the quanity of fuel delivered at lower temps but so much as when the gas is already in your tank and the temps increase later in the day that expands the molecules of the fuel thus increasing the volume of fuel... (not by much but every little bit helps)

  • @Michiganborn1969

Oh, btw, like I said. TRY to fill at the coolest part of the day. Here in the Sacramento area the overnight temps are about 40F & I really don't feel like rolling my sleepy ass out of bed at 4:30am to go put fuel in the Jimmy.

  • @Michiganborn1969 Why #5? is it because the fuel tank is stirred up and you might get more debris from inside the tank? Regarding #2, I thought the tanks today have charcoal evaporative controls that recycle that evaporated gas back into the system.

  • @spelunkerd

Yes on #5 but for #2 is more for older cars/trucks that have large gas tanks.

  • Well Eric, this video sucked (G) As(S)

    Big Time. LOL

  • Can you make a video how to gap a saprk plugs????????

  • @rodolfovalle120 Get a gapping tool, they're only a few dollars and fairly self-explanatory.

  • @rodolfovalle120 Perhaps at some point but it's not as relevant today as it once was, plugs have come a long way as well as the combustion engine.

  • VCM>VTEC

  • Buy a scooter

  • buy a harley

  • convert to propane.

  • VTAK YO!

  • 2.69$ pr litre in norway. That`s 10,76$ a gallon. Can someone top that?

  • @tipetu Wow! we pay about $CAN 1,45 /litre here (montreal, canada) and it's expensive...that's like $5,50/ gal.

  • @tipetu Not me, that sucks. Can't you ski everywhere though?

  • @EricTheCarGuy No, because of all the polar bears

  • lol rolf lmfao

  • tires at right pressure, clean car/trunk,no jack rabbit starts or race light to light......surprise how much you save.

  • LOL COOL CHADS

  • Don't hit VTEC LOL

  • @offspringy lollllllllll

  • @offspringy ahhh lol gotta hit it on highway

  • haha i would love to pay the same price you do for gas in the states,135.9 pence per litre over here in the uk =( & thats in a fairly cheap area

  • @shizerproject not really that cheap, edinburgh city centre is 132.9 or 133.9 depending on company.

  • @shizerproject I so agree! Here in norway we pay up to $10 per us Gal, aint that a B***h^^ but as long as you have fun driveing you do not really care .... or do you ^^

  • @shizerproject move :D

  • @shizerproject I'm with you on that as I know it's more expensive in Europe but the truth is that you have better roads and a better public transportation than we do so I guess it even's out.

  • Which one is it- slow down or stay dirty?

  • @bhstone1 stay dirty ofc. :D

  • @bhstone1 Both

  • yeah, i figured that trick out a while ago......it's amazing how well it works!

  • so simple yet you just look like a b.a.

  • LOL i dont know i just found that funny
