  • I had a similar problem with a Para Ordnance Double Stacked 1911 not sure of the name but i fired off a round on accident and the hammer did not pull back.

  • napolean dynamite?

  • This guy needs rainbow grips on his 1911.

  • use the bottom of your magazine to depress the guide rog plug, jeez. i also like the standard guire rod and plug, however.

  • the frame on the kimber and the sw1911 commander sizes are both the same

  • You are a bit of a tool.

  • It should be pointed out that not all Kimbers are short barrel and have mags that only hold 7 rounds. If you get the custom series it's a 5 inch barrel and from factory will come with an 8 round mag. Spare OEM mags usually only come as 7 rounds but you can convert them to 8

  • by the way, I love my Scandium 386 PD and the same in 44 mag. Just remember they are not for target practise.I rarely shoot them. I could not believe the difference going from a 686 plus (7 rd) (34 ounce) to the 386 PD (7 rd)(17 ounces) I carry it every day all day.The worst thing is the black will wear off at the wear points Fast. I sent it back once, about a flaw, and they put a new frame on it with the same serial number.

  • I can't be the only person that knows how to open up a 45 without bothering with that front bushing. 1 hold frame 2 move slide rearward untill the slide release will come out. 3 remove slide release. 4 move slide away from frame till it comes off. if you dont have a full length guide rod just close your fingers around the slide and spring as it comes off to retain the spring and spring plug. ive shot Colt 45 for years and in IPSC. Done it a million times.

  • @Alwayscarry1 I actually don't know much about adjusting the trigger on the 1911. I don't think its something you want to mess around wth though. Id let a gunsmith handle that if you're not experienced with it.

  • BORING!!!!!

  • Take the video down man. The ATF doesn't care if its a malfunction, they will still screw you over. Look up 'David Olofson'.

  • the easiest way to take this one or any 1911 with full lenght guide rod is to pull the slide back to the take down notch. remove slide catck/take down pin and remove the complete upper assembly.

  • Just curious, whats custom about this gun? I mean it does look very similiar to the 1911PD on the S&W site

  • i like the rib on the slide, i realy like it

  • You could use the base plate of the magazine to push down the spring bushing to turn the barrel bushing. Works fine for me and I dont need an extra "tool" to take apart the gun.

  • Great review and great gun. Can you use this as concealed carry?

  • How hard does it shoot

  • I think that would be pretty cool to get 2-3 rounds off with one pull of the trigger! The ATF SUCKS and many elitists in this Country whom are against guns and law-abiding citizens having them are down-right, absolute FREAK-AZZ ignorant mutha-F###ed MORONS!!!! They simply churn my guts!!!

  • great vid.

  • Thanks for the review, I used it to decide whether or not to buy one myself. Long story short I'm picking one up tonight.

  • the butt of a magazine works great to depress the plug on a full length guide rod, the ones that come with this model are non marring plastic too.

  • I own the "basic" version of this pistol. No custom work.

The trigger pull is not very light, but it is short. It also has a nice "stage" spot partway through the pull.

    It is very lightweight.

I purchased some Wilson Combat "Legendary" magazines for it, so...ten rounds in the mag, plus one in the chamber.

Only one failure to eject in the first few hundred rounds.

In my opinion, this is a gun for an experienced shooter. The felt-recoil seems very heavy.

  • what branch of the service were you in

  • Great review. I've got the 1911 PD TRS with 5" barrel and have been real happy with it. The weight and feel was what sold me on it, over another S&W and Kimber model.

  • I disagree with your comment about the scandium being to new to base a conclusion about strength. S&W has been using scandium for at least 7 years. I havent heard of any issues to date.

  • What past issues? What am I missing?

  • "a little stronger than aluminum"Scandium aluminum alloy is being used by s&w in 44 mag frames aluminum 38 frames have trouble with 38plus p loads. Kona tech claim the alloy is twice as strong as 6061 and 7005 aluminum which are strong aluminums.

  • Great review!! What watch are you wearing in the video?

  • Thanks! Casio pathfinder titanium PAW1300T. Great watch! It deserves a review I just haven't had a chance to do it yet.

  • @wishbone1138 great review, I have what appears to be an identical gun, only put 40-80 rds thru it so far. Am concerned with trigger reset or overtravel adjustment! What is proceedure for adjusting, or should I seek a gunsmith?

  • Great review, Im gettin ready to purchase a SW1911PD and just wondering how the gun is still holding up. Like you said in the video and what I've heard SW's customer service is great and the fact it done in U.S.A and being handled properlly is a plus for me.

  • The gun is still holding up just fine and is a joy to shoot. However, I have to admit I haven't been to the range with it very often since filming this. I'll definitely report back if I experience any more issues. So no news is generally good news. =)

  • Good review. Just a note, a true commander sized 1911 has a 4.25" barrel. You meantioned 4" in the video and in the description. I know Kimber uses a 4" barrel, but S&W uses a 4.25" (true commander size).

  • My kimber is a 3", but you're right on the commander sized of course. Not sure why I said 4" (laziness probably), thanks for the catch, I'll annotate that! Thanks for watching!

  • No problem. I figured it was just a fluke. You obviously know what you're talking about when it comes to firearms. Take care.

  • dude you give excellent reviews, their mostly unbiased, very accurate, imformative and to the point. Do more gun reviews... i love 1911's, but if i may suggest, maybe something on other carry pistols from Springfield, Glock, or S&W...ect

  • Thanks! It's impossible to be completely unbiased, but I do try my best. I'll definitely see about getting some more firearms reviews.

  • Hi. Nice review, You have really done your research. I've been told the full-length guide rod, in addition to holding the spring & making it last longer, adds extra weight to the slide making it more accurate (more hype). I was wondering do you know if the 8 rd. mag is universal fitting other 1911's? S&W 1911's have always been much more expensive than comperable models, but perform on par if not lower according to gun tests magazine. I still am a steel person & prefer steel frames. Thx.JAMES

  • Yes, the 8 rd mag is completely universal. The only caveat is that it will stick out on any smaller framed weapon meant only for a 7 rd mag (like any ultra kimber). Any additional weight forward in the firearm can help with recoil, but I'm with you I think it's mostly hype. I appreciate this S&W but I will probably not buy another considering the options available in this price range. All steel is a great way to go, some people just don't like the weight. Thanks for watching!

  • one other thing about scandium - it's pretty new, but S&W has some really nice Sc and Ti revolvers that hold up well. The Russians had AlSc alloys for a while, and the aerospace industry uses them extensively. Sc is a grain refiner, so it toughens the metal (as in the opposite of brittle) rather than imparting much in the way of tensile strength or surface hardness in and of itself. It's a good addition to high load items like landing gear and gun frames. Definitely a plus ;-)

  • I fired one of the SC small revolvers. It felt like my wrist was going to break every time I fired it! Thanks for the extra info on Scandium, I feel it's a plus as well, but always fall back to marketing hype until I see it hold up throughout time. I'm with you though, sounds like a good metal. =) Thanks for watching.

  • For that barrel lock deal - you can put a dime on your finger before pushing down on it - helps out with not cutting a round out of your thumb tip ;-)

Or just get their fancy schmantzy wrench :-p

Nice review - I like the safety reiteration.

  • Enjoyed this review thanks.

    IR

  • i just ordered the Essex Arms Enhanced Commander receiver and slide and some parts brownells cant wait to put it together and get the fitting out of the way.

  • A dime works pretty good in place of a bushing wrench when you need to depress he plunger. By the way, nice vid.

  • Good call, thanks for the suggestion!

  • The first day i bought the smith and wesson 1911pd it blew up and the firing pin and spring shot into my face. Thanks smith and wesson!!!

  • Holy crap! I'm glad you lived to tell about it. I can't think that's a usual case, but mine obviously wasn't perfect either.

  • I received it back in June of this year S&W said they replaced the barrel bushing, but paper work says polished feed ramp. Spoke with head of sales department, she told me instead of using the slide release to use the sling shot method. Come on, they advertise it as there top of the line Custom 1911 it should work right. This was on going since November 2007. I really like the look and feel and wanted to believe things would be better but I just put it away. Good luck with your S&W 1911.

  • ouch, sorry to hear you've had so many problems! I really need to shoot mine more to make sure it doesn't still have issues but so far it's been fine. Your story is definitely incredible though, so far they've been ok with me. Although I question what they wrote down to fix it, it did seem to resolve the issue.

  • I had a S&W 410S Pistol I purchased new. I had to send it back 3 times. Finally I was told I would get a new Pistol. I was sent wrong model and a used rusty pistol. Director of marketing called to apologize. He sent me a Performance Center 1911 Stainless. I shot it twice. Both times after firing about 50 rounds when loading a magazine pushing the slide release the cartridge will not fully chamber. I have to tap on the back of the slide and then it will chamber. Sent it back to S&W again.

  • hard to find a 1911 without front serration these days, cheap ones anyway. every company has those tactical feature for their entry level 1911s but i found them useless.i just want a simple 1911 that shoots straight and looks clean.

  • I'm with you. Too many options for mostly marketing purposes these days. I'll probably unload some of my 1911s and just purchase a few colts to customize exactly how I like. That way I can get what I want and no more.

  • im getting a basic WW2 1911 from Auto Ordance. screw the new guns. i heard nothing but good reviews about AO 1911. it doesnt have any company stampings on it. looksvery close to a army issued 1911 from 40's . and im gonna shoot IPSC with it.

  • Sounds good. You should do a review on the AO after you have a chance to use it. I'm dieing to get into IDPA, just haven't taken the time to do it yet.

  • beautiful gun and also great review.

I think i may be purchasing a gun in the later years, after college. so this review will come in handy later on. :D

  • Thanks, lots to choose from out there, goodluck!

  • awseome review man reaaly nice looking gun

  • thanks man!
