My understanding of this process is that the first spray is actually a metal spray of some kind, i.e. it is actually embedding tiny shards of metal into the plastic. From there, the second coat is the chrome, which actually adheres to those tiny metal shards, but I might be wrong. It works similar to that anyway, I am pretty sure.

If someone was to figure out the trade "secret", would it be safe to do some of this work at home, say like on some classic mustang instrument bezels? Or are there too many unsafe chemicals involved? I have lots and lots of old mustang parts that I collected and am too broke(wife kids payments, etc) to get them all chromed. That does look awesome!
