I just returned from Shanghai! It is an amazing city and I hope to go back someday. I loved the competitiveness with the lighted buildings...even office buildings. It's a playful and fun place at night time.

I was there in May 2008. Hotels are quite cheap compared to the US, although the luxury end is very expensive.
If you look for Western style restaurants you can pay just as much as in the West.
In fact western goods cost pretty much the same. A coffee in Starbucks will cost you around 30 yuan or around $4.
