Although I love the melody and the beautiful voice of Tony Bennett, this song is a little depressing when it says you can never have that love again - I don't believe it.
This rendition by Tony Bennett constantly reminds me of my first real love that I ditched for a girl that, would never in a lifetime, be a minuscle percent of the special person that she was then and to this day. I have always wanted to say sorry with this song playing in the background. That was over 50 years ago but the memory will will never die
To sheltv100 Tony did a duet with the amazing AMY WINEHOUSE now that was real talent many didn't know her until she died sad, gaga has been supported big by media that is all.
Tony Bennett, great talent and voice love it!!!!!
I love love love this song - and it took me ages to find it again. I am going to see Tony Bennett october 3rd 2011, but I doubt he can hit the high notes and manage this masterpiece. Beautifull, romantic, and lovely lyrics - just like music was in the 60's. This is by far my favourite - but it is only on 1CD and difficult to get. Thank you for putting it on so old romantics like myself can listen to it x
When my wife of 45 years passed on a passing breeze took away the light of my life. This song helps me rekindle memories of the love I lost - thank you Tony
this song seems to carry everyone back to different places and times.different places and times but all are the same bitter/sweet memories.time to move on and create now new memories for tomorrow.
My husband passed away a little over 2 years ago, 17 days after our 55th anniversary. He was 18 & I was 15 when we married. We had some stormy times and almost didn't make it through some of them. Yesterday this song came into my head as I was feeling lost and lonely and I began to sing it. Didn't make it through the line, "now the tree is gone". Have been singing it ever since and finally had to hear the real thing. This is it! Thank you for the memories Tony. And thank you ruedydude
we never really know how important the moment is until it has past us.this always makes one wonder that old question "what could of been".i myself must believe that all things good or bad happen for a reason and its all for the better in the end.no matter how dark the nights are there is always a morning just around the bend
This and The Good Life are my favorite Tony Bennett songs. OUAT is from the Charles Strouse musical, All American. Ray Bolger is an immigrant professor who comes to a college. He and his girl friend are reminiscing. As good as Tony sings this, The original cast due of Bolger and Eileen Herlie are superb! Ya gotta hear it.
@wimpers Yes so do I, makes you think how good life can be , I miss my youth but I dont mind getting old, I think maybe that we have a soul that rolls around and that when it has learnt everything about love, peace, and harmony its will last forever
must be that most everyone feels the the same. thank you for down/up loading this song. i had asked my friend to burn this for me, she gave it as present for the holidays with love and she passed away.
Tony Bennett, one of the last connections to the Great area of song: with the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald. May he sing forever. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Dad, One of his favorites... When I was a kid playing in front of the hifi Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Al Martino and many other songs of the time were played over and over into my brain. Now I know why, they were/are great songs and I reconnect to those moments and Dad when I hear them again. "Smile" sung by Tony B. was high on the list too! The Jackie Gleason Orchestra Instrumentals were played alot as well.
My father chose this for my mother's funeral. They were married 46 years and she passed away this past January. I hadn't heard this song before, but it was absolutely perfect . It described the long lasting love of my parents and their marriage. We showed a slide show of their special moments together over the years. It was just so beautiful.
tony bennett is a genius. he interprets a song like he feels it as though he's lived it and knows the meaning.why do singers of this calibre live on & on? because they are great purvayers of sheer class.long may he reign.thankyou RUEDYDUDE.
Beautiful forgotten song from a Broadway play called All American. Very fine version, but if you can, listen to the one by Eddie Fisher from his Eddie Fisher Today album.
@carvetop01 Thanks Allen,I like Tony Bennett, very musical and great voice, he really gets into the song and brings out all the colors, thanks for sending,Vic.
Bennet did a great job with this but I like Perry Como's version better. Perry's is more mellow. "Once upon a time, the world was sweeter than we knew" is magical.
The first time I heard this was in 1968 or 1969. We were watching the Miss South Carolina pageant on TV and the woman who won sang this song as her talent portion. I fell in love with the song right there and then and still love it to this day.
This man had so much soul and compassion in his Heart it astounds me to believe what this Virtual Being of Mortal Man could produce in the meaning of True Love. Thank you Mr. Tony Bennett for probably what I think was The Most Beautiful Song ever Sang by Yourself.
In 1965 Frank Sinatra said of Tony Bennett, "For my money he is the best singer on the charts today." This was originally on the San Francisco albulm and Tony proves Frank right.
I discovered Tony Bennett when I was 16 years old. That was in the late 60's. I still like him, but prefer the way he sang in those years compared to now. I still listen to his older recordings and love them.
@tntrvlngrl2 I first heard this song on a Saturday night Carol Burnett show. I was maybe 11 years old, and I sneaked outside that night, in the snow, and walked to Ingleside, telling myself, " Don't forget that great song. Don't forget that song. " And I hear it now, and I'm that kid in that cold night, under those trees: Once upon a time, indeed. It matters, doesn't it ? The song and the singer and the worth to your life.
Honestly, all you people who have written responses to this song : You are special and your comments are making my throat lumpy while I listen.......Is it the song that's inspiring everyone to express their human-ness, or is everyone who's taking the time to share their feelings making the song seem even more warm and wistful?
You know, this song is about ten years before my time, but nevertheless, I can't help but feel nostalgic when I hear it. It naturally (and inexorably) makes you long for the days gone by. How bitter-sweet.
hi lpvcrcd. you're so right. The moment I had, back in the 60s, will always be in my head and in my heart. And fortunately my ex and I are still friends, so we're still in each other's lives to some extent.
Thank you God for giving me 67 years of life, once upon a time during the Vietnam war I never thought I would get to 23 years, but it's great to hear this song and reflex on my years with my wife, kids, and grand kids, Always thinking for those that never had the chance I did, God Bless all who gave their all.
Once upon a time I met a girl on BI in the summer of love (1969). I wonder if she knows how lucky we were to have that summer, Rod McKuen and Brigadoon. I still remember...
My mother used to play this....she was a professional pianist/entertainer. I was just a little girl and now 50 years later, I cry when I hear this. But I cherish the memories that she and so many talents like Tony Bennett gave us.
Tony, Perry, Frank ( and others of that era) all have given us music that will never be repeated. At 60 I still love the music I was raised on. God Bless our elders.
@flam51 My mother liked this song also She used to play the record It's easy to remember good people when hearing the good music they cherished. Takes us back with them and to a simpler time in life.
we really don't know how special a moment is until it is long past then it's too late.grab life for all its worth and don't let it go.live, love, dance for it too will pass.all we will have is a fleeting memory melting like a dew drop in the early morning sun
@captjohnmatch56 It was lovely that you wrote this especially goes with the words to this wonderful song. Ive loved it since 1960 and still do. Went to see Tony in concert about 30 years ago, I sent a request for this song on the back of a glam photo thought it might sway it, but he didnt sing it. Do you like him singing TILL I only heard this again its beautiful. gemini1100
@gemini1100 my wife and daughter and i went to see tony.i loved it but my wife and daughter did not relate.my wife is 3 years younger and daughter was around 15.i always listened to "older"music as a kid so i savor this more than the rest of my family.
@captjohnmatch56 I listen to this and think of my ex-fiancee. I tried so hard to keep our relationship. I tried my best but it takes two to make a relationship work.
one of the saddest - and most beautiful - songs in the world. i hear it and am immediately transported back in time to a small private club in Pittsburgh. i am dancing with my ex-wife (just loved to dance with her), and i don't know that i ever experienced a more contented moment in my life than that one. i'm glad to have had it.
@DLM629 Life is just that, "Moments"..you have to cherish them, and love them. I loss my first wife to Cancer, but will always treasure those moments we had. Maybe like you, just seems like yesterday. Really makes you think, maybe we are all just passing through, so as the saying goes, "Enjoy the ride"..I liked your posting!!
@DLM629 memories are just selected times in life that sit close to our hearts Even bad ones are tough to shake but they are there to make the great memories shine even more! Sorry it didn't work out The time in Pittsburg you mentioned is obviously priceless and romantic What in life is better to hold close to ourselves than that?
I heard this song a short time after a beakup with the first (and probably) the only true love of my life. It drove home how unbelievably sad I was. I never forgot the song, or Tony Bennet singing it, I was about 19 at the time. About 35 years ago.
@zip9k Hmmm, as the song says, "Once upon a time never comes again"..and "where did all go"..I am just a few yrs older, but when you are alone with your thoughts, you still seem to throw those same sweet thoughts around...seems like yesterday!!
The first time I heard this song was on Boston Legal, I'd have to say that's my favorite version. As much as Tony sings it wonderfully I don't think I'll ever like another version as Scott Bakula's in Boston Legal.
One of the greatest songs writtrn and Tony's version is superb. Not a hit for him, it was the 45's B side. The A side, "I left my heart in San Francisco."
Actually, Frank SInatra did it before anyone....except for Ray Bolger in the broadway musical, Personally Tony's version is better than anyone elses.....ALTHOUGH, Ketty's and Al's versions aren't bad,JMHO
Victor Laurel, I believe, sang the BEST rendition of this timeless love song. Tony Bennet is really good too, but I just have to give it to, MR. VICTOR LAUREL, who was the best Filipino male vocalist in his prime back in the '70's. Edwardo.
I totally agree with you blkshepherd, the emotions this song stirs in us,even we were still young boys and girls,it certainly brings them back, some happy, some sad...
oh god yes..some happy ..some sad. .two legends lost this week..Once Upon a Time..we had Farrah and Michael..now we have neither..like the song says..Once Upon a Time..my heart is so crushed right now.
No one and I do mean NO one can sing this song and bring the emotions Tony does. I think of my moms(who passed Oct 08) my aunt who passed years before, i think of nyc in the 60s being a little boy . i think of friends i lost along the way never to see again. this song takes me so far out..but i now that once upon a time Never comes again......tony you are the best. what a tear jerker this song is. omg.
I feel like crying now..because of two legends lost in one week..Once upon a time we had and Angel name Farrah and Thriller named Michael..now both are gone, never to be seen again. "Tony has seen alot of people come and go. me too.;-(
Very good version, but there is one by Eddie Fisher that is even better. This is from a Broadway musical called All American that sadly did not do well in its short run in 1962.
I remember hearing this song in my early teens way back in the 60s and I loved then as I do now. I may have been an old "fart" then; I loved the Tonight Show; Nat Cole, Frank and others. Well...
How many days we have left on this planet is bewildering. Once upon a time can never come again is so sad for us all. It should be the theme song to our Future....Roll the Dice.......
this song kills me..it reminds me of my dear departed moms..my aunt and uncle..my pet King..whom also passed along with moms..my childhood back in brooklyn..in the 60s..now the tenement/apt. is Gone..like the tree..where did it go.where did all my school friends go. where did the 60s go..the 60s had its share(the war) but no era can touch the music and talent such as this. Elvis, Tony, Beatles, Supremes all once upon a Time in the 60s.and never the likes of any of them again!
life at times can really be tough.. we go in and out of the highs and lows. As you get older you become more sensitive because you realize that LIFE is precious and there and NO guarantees.Like you, I grew up in Bklyn NY in the late 50s and early 60s...The words of so many of these standards touch you and when you REALLY listen to what the words are saying..... You will have tears in your eyes.....Til next time my friend, God Bless and enjoy the memories.....They will keep you going!....DALLAS
Beautifully said. I love this song and it evokes memories for me too. I grew up in Brooklyn in the 50's and 60's also (Bensonhurst). Where did it all go? We'll never know the innocence of those days again.
The word I use to describe this song is "wistful" - pensive sadness, yearning. Interestingly, the musical it came from "All American" was a flop in the early 60s. The book for the show was written by Mel Brooks. A lovely song.
I woke up one morning with this song in my mind and couldn't figure where it came from. Thank God for utube and those who let us sort of relive our youth. My husband said it was the saddest song he'd ever heard. Surprised me.
Very nice. But it was Frank Sintra on his September of My Years album where I first heard this song. And Frank did it the best. Let me find the Lettermen haven't heard that one yet.
His voice is beautiful....unique....but please open your mind and check out Bobby Darin`s version of this song !!! What would we do with out great talents like Tony, Bobby, Sinatra to paith the way....!!!!!! dh
Sinatra said he was a singer's singer and learned lots about breathing from Tony. You'll never hear Tony take an inhale but you will now forever more hear every other singer taking a breath.
The beautiful thing about Tony is he knows what to do with a song. His timing , phrasing, rubatto, legato and just the great love he gives to every song make him so very very special.
One off.
Listen to his How do you keep the music playing also. Wow. Thank you Tony for qall the joy you bring and have given to me and my loves. The Baldchemist
are people tolerant of old romantics? I just found "Once upon a time" sung by Tony Bennett on youtube ... it is absolutely beautiful rendition. Reminds me of my first love whom I still think about after 45 years!
I went to New York to see him last summer and i knew the minute I saw that my heart never lied to me, that I would always love him. I had so much to say but the word got stuck in my throat, and it was the first time in all these years that I was at peace inside and with the world around me.
Thank you, you are very kind. You know, he never married. I decided that I'm going to move to NY and try to win back what was stolen so long ago. I''m pretty sure that he was as happy to see me as I was him. I have spent my life and 2 bad marriages trying to replace him. He's not replaceable. I spent too much time regretting losing him, My once upon a time is going to come again, I have a second chance and I'm going to take it and get back what was stolen from us so many years ago.
zylokkk: You are a man after my own heart. Are we twins separated at birth? If this song doesn't bring up memories of a first, lost love, then it's never happened to you.
I know how you feel, sounds as if was the 60's as it was for me which made it extra special. Check out Charles Aznouvour - "Yesterday when I was Young" & ABBA "Our last Summer" (may not have been Paris but was supposed to be the age of no regrets)
You truly can't appreciate this song until you reach the age of fifty or so. If you have reached that age and still can't see it... you've never loved my friend.

Well said. This tune along with Tony's version of Tender Is The Night can transport one's mind and spirit to times past.

Do you like him singing TILL I only heard this again its beautiful. gemini1100

@gemini1100 my wife and daughter and i went to see tony.i loved it but my wife and daughter did not relate.my wife is 3 years younger and daughter was around 15.i always listened to "older"music as a kid so i savor this more than the rest of my family.

one of the saddest - and most beautiful - songs in the world. i hear it and am immediately transported back in time to a small private club in Pittsburgh. i am dancing with my ex-wife (just loved to dance with her), and i don't know that i ever experienced a more contented moment in my life than that one. i'm glad to have had it.

@DLM629 Life is just that, "Moments"..you have to cherish them, and love them. I loss my first wife to Cancer, but will always treasure those moments we had. Maybe like you, just seems like yesterday. Really makes you think, maybe we are all just passing through, so as the saying goes, "Enjoy the ride"..I liked your posting!!
billeagle51 1 year ago
@DLM629 memories are just selected times in life that sit close to our hearts Even bad ones are tough to shake but they are there to make the great memories shine even more! Sorry it didn't work out The time in Pittsburg you mentioned is obviously priceless and romantic What in life is better to hold close to ourselves than that?

I heard this song a short time after a beakup with the first (and probably) the only true love of my life. It drove home how unbelievably sad I was. I never forgot the song, or Tony Bennet singing it, I was about 19 at the time. About 35 years ago.
zip9k 2 years ago 5

I think T.B. is the original for this song . . . I used to have the 45rpm flip-side with "I left My Heart in S.F." . .. back in 1963 . .

Edwardo.

this song kills me..it reminds me of my dear departed moms..my aunt and uncle..my pet King..whom also passed along with moms..my childhood back in brooklyn..in the 60s..now the tenement/apt. is Gone..like the tree..where did it go.where did all my school friends go. where did the 60s go..the 60s had its share(the war) but no era can touch the music and talent such as this.

The word I use to describe this song is "wistful" - pensive sadness, yearning. Interestingly, the musical it came from "All American" was a flop in the early 60s. The book for the show was written by Mel Brooks. A lovely song.

I went to New York to see him last summer and i knew the minute I saw that my heart never lied to me, that I would always love him. I had so much to say but the word got stuck in my throat, and it was the first time in all these years that I was at peace inside and with the world around me.
chrissytassone 2 years ago 2
WOW...Chrissy - your remarks have touched me as much as TB's vocal here.." my heart never lied to me " My throat has closed around the lump...
I think you're a lovely and special girl ( woman ? ) and I'm hoping you're surrounded by people who recognize your quality and grace.
iaminthburg 2 years ago 2
Thank you, you are very kind. You know, he never married. I decided that I'm going to move to NY and try to win back what was stolen so long ago. I''m pretty sure that he was as happy to see me as I was him. I have spent my life and 2 bad marriages trying to replace him. He's not replaceable. I spent too much time regretting losing him, My once upon a time is going to come again, I have a second chance and I'm going to take it and get back what was stolen from us so many years ago.
