  • This VVT-I scares me. That's a lot more that can go wrong leading to much more expensive repairs. Are there three chains in the cam drive system? Are these chains intended to last the life of the engine, or do they need to be changed as a maintenance item like the belts are changed?

  • @dojmike Toyota has been using VVT-i and related valve technologies since 1991. They also use timing chains instead of belts for reliability. Timing chains should last as long as any other engine components.
