after watching this i think you cosmcosm is the answer to all my production problems, ive dedicated my whole day to watching your videos, so inspiring & informative, really well done mate.
I am new to ableton and have spent the last week looking for and following tutorials so I can get my head around the program. You tute is without a doubt the most fun I have had with ableton so far. It is such an amazing program. Can't wait to do more of your tutes! Thanks
I can't find where to download that kick you have preloaded in this vid in the very beginning. Can someone help me find this, please???? & thanks for the great tutorials and sharing your knowledge.
when you make a note in the midi clip, how can you like stretch it? because I'm always only able to make notes exactly the size of the grid.. but if you want to make it faster (smaller than the grid) how do you do that? I only tried to click that button under the 120.0 Beat rate (the buttons say 2 and *2) that shorten the note, but when I start making new notes they are big again..I know that you can drag the sides, but sometimes I want it somewhere between. I hope you understand any tips?
why is your kick like 6 seconds long? i try making one in arrangement view but i can't make it longer than a regular kick...? does this even matter?
I just got ableton 3 days ago, have never produced before this, and am only 17.
I've already logged over 12 hours on it just messing around, but I don't know much... anyway can anyone recommend the best way for picking up ableton?
@laysitroll Picking up as in purchasing? No recomendation. Picking up as in getting better? Try to go in sessions. Sit down for one hour, and time it. After that hour is up, stop and save it as session #(whatever session your on) and listen to what you have created. then do another hour one, but start a new one, might use the same bassline but you will ultimatley add something on everytime.
I have over 230 sessions ranging from 1 to 8 hours. Just takes time my friend.
you taught me something that i thought i would have to search forever for, using the effects of the compressor is something i haven't had a chance to experiment with enough, thanks so much :) this video is EXACTLY what i need at the moment! ! ! ! !
@cosmcosm great tutorial. It's a bit too advanced for me, an Ableton newbie. I learnt alot though, will definitely be back once I'm more familiar with Ableton. Watching your video, I learnt some things which would have taken me months to figure out by myself.
Great explanation, being a kiwi, I can understand everything you said. Maybe I should do the English transcript, for the non-Kiwi listeners. Some have referred to speed and not understanding everything.
@ThePhiltastic The Ableton interface is not only clean and relatively easy to navigate after a short learning curve, it is also very intuitive and very uncluttered. You clearly need to spend a little more time with it.
@CookieFritz This half hour tutorial is the first in 10 tutorials on basslines only. Need I say anything more? I started using Ableton yesterday and today I created a little bit of simple sounds with it, but doesn't sound very natural, and took me hell of a long time.
very informative video definitely taught me some unique things, trying to get more creative with the music im making this is opened my eyes to some options. thanks =D
I'm about ten minutes into this vid, and consider myself an advanced beginner at Ableton, and am picking up some great info, shortcut explanations are a cool touch.
Also looking through the titles of your other videos and am eager to watch those too.
I actually like that fact that he is quick about his tutorials, cause it shows it knows what he is talking about. Plus I know Ableton enough that I can keep up with him. Keep it up Cosmcosm!
@cosmcosm you should do text/pic tutorials because I followed a tutorial and fucked up right at the end....... and didn't realize now I have to completely restart lol. But holy crap.. You're a pro at this stuff. Good on ya mate :D
if i may ask, why did you use reverb? I'm relatively new to ableton/production. To me it just sounds like it added white noise to it... and make it sound more roomy. Was reverb to give it a "warmer sound" and make it sound less like a pure signal/sound?
@djb1a2k3 i moved from fl to reason, than ableton. i now use ableton and reason rewired , and when i see fl studio i laugh at it. i learned sooo much more in reason (how to plug the plugs in plugins, and how to create sounds, not just use presets), and then came ableton, were i have such mobility.
@OverBlackSands actually most use pro tools, cubase or logic, every studio I've been to either have pro tools or logic, the guys who use live mostly bring it with them(macbooks or laptop) but that doesn't matter as they mostly use third party plugins like reaktor to create sound effects and stuff, I use fl studio & logic as I personally can't work with live cos I don't like the interface but each man to his own I guess
@LemonBoiLehclox i see. Thanks for the reply :D I'm actually just starting out on this "thing". Trying to learn how to use Reason and to create sounds
Cool vid Tom, but I've got a question. Why do you use simpler to write your drum tracks instead of using the drum rack? I'm a n00b when it comes to making electronic music so the answer is probably pretty obvious, I just can't see it.
Keep up the good work man, the tutorials are really helpful.
@hflat1 you cant say all ozzies and kiwis speak this fast man thats a gross generalization .. we have our fare share of pot smokers dude ... they talk slow as ...
@MrTranceDeejay If you really want the "WTF drugs is he on?" effect, start the video with the CC button on (preferably without realising it for best effect), and try following the on screen text. It's totally surreal. :)

I like your method of composition. It's very similar to mine.
1) Build up an okay sounding track to figure out the sound you're looking for
2) Delete everything, and come up with something totally different that sounds better
3) Change the saw bass to a square wave.
4) Frig around with the effects some more.
5) Repeat
