  • This is awesome. I'm actually a beginner but I'm keeping myself inspired by slowly learning songs by amazing bands like Tool. I love Justin Chancellors sound too. this is the first Tool song I'm attempting to learn. This video is really helping me understand how to apply the tab I got off Tooltabs.net. I appreciate it! Thanks :)

(Will be checking out more of your other videos too.)

  • @JoMoolenschot I'm really glad I helped you ! have fun with the bass ;)

  • @JoMoolenschot Try lateralus by tool thats a fun good one

  • This cover blows. Check out my channel for bass truth.

  • @AdrenalineThrob come on ... are you going to do this on all my videos ?

  • @remiiiiiii Are all of your videos of pure shit???????

  • @AdrenalineThrob I'm not the one coming on other people's channel asking "check my channel". Did you at least read the comments you have on it ?

  • @remiiiiiii Yes. Half the viewers think it's a flawless cover, and the other half are jealous.

  • @AdrenalineThrob hihihi, hohoho. watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

  • great cover

  • Thanks for the upload, your tool videos are making things so much easier for me and my band =) I don't think I begin to come as close to that sound you're hitting.

I have two suggestions in case you want to re-record the video. In the 'finger deep witnin the borderline' part, you play 2-10-0-12-0 three times - second time should be 2-10-12-0-12 ('reversed'). In the ending I noticed it changes between E# and E on the low sting and E only on the high string - i.e. not straight up E's.

  • I find it funny that in tool songs guitar is always is really tricky and requires a lot of practice. but bass in tool songs you can pretty much pick it up straight away

  • Incredible sound!

  • I just want to let you know, you're my hero :) and have helped me become a better bassist.

  • @SavyBear I'm glad I helped you :)

  • When you play the chorus and you slide down to the 10 and 12, how do you get your strings to not recoil and give you this ugly poing sound? When I try to play it, it drives me crazy. How do you have this deep, crisp tone. ><"

Is it the strings? I have Elixir strings 50-105.

  • @PolarityArt Hi. You mean that when you play it the string goes above your neck ? otherwise I don't understand :D make a video and show me :)

If it's what you mean, just try to press the string straight, and also practice slowly.

Check my profile for the strings brand.

  • @PolarityArt

If your strings are buzzing on the fret board that means that your action is too low. Adjust the action so the strings are farther from the fret board.

  • very good cover, very helpful for a beginner !

  • that little interlude part at 3:30 is possibly the most orgasmic piece of music ever written

  • Do u ever play without a pick?

  • @MrFatkids4life if you take 5 minutes, you can browse my other videos, and ... voila ! some covers without a pick.

  • @MrFatkids4life

    Josh doesnt use picks...

  • @MrFatkids4life is it really that bad if he doesnt...

  • @MrFatkids4life Does it matter if he ever plays without a pick. I dont. Either way he is good at what he do. So if it aint broke, dont fix it

  • believe it or not I actually prefer listening to this video rather than the actual song, that's how good this video is. Ace cover mate!

  • @ddrumdude thanks a lot :)

  • please explain to me...how did you make the bass sound like that? or is it just the brand of bass? im new at playing and i have no clue so please reply

  • @zombiking97 check my profile page, my gear is listed. My fingers are my own property, so I can't share them :p

  • @remiiiiiii what is the tuning for this song?

  • @alexed18 its drop D

  • remiiiiii i know u live on the other side of the world but i think u should know that ur my teacher. Screw tabs i just watch u play and i learn so fast.

  • @assassinick Thanks mate :) I'm glad to help

  • Like a pro.

  • @scarsontable like a boss.

  • awesome.

  • Your Tool tone is absolutely spot on

  • Why is there even a dislike button on this page?

  • love it dude keep it up ur awsome

  • wow!!

  • playing with a pick is HARD!! id like to play with it as a well as u

  • Comment removed

  • great video quality, what u use?

  • Damn awesome how fast your fingers move between 2:57 and 3:25, just love it pure skill

  • what are you using for that sound bro

  • What is this peice tuned to?

  • tnx mate, we have the same bass, but mine is with white pickguard

  • normally i rip on pick users

but for tool you have to use a pick theres no question about it

  • God I love that sound. Great work.

  • i learned this song by watching this video great job man keep it up

  • Y PICK MAN?

  • @Royzilber because its how the original bassist plays it

  • FU**IN` AWESOME!!!

  • im tried of hearing "why the pick....why do you use a pick" SHU THE FUCK UP idiots fucken justin uses a pick its call maybe watch a few videos on him playing god damn dumbasses

  • I really really like your interpretation of this song. I'm sure you'd heard this a million times, but do you happen to tab this down??? If so, can I please have your tab? I really really like your take on the "light" parts during the bridge. Much better than other tabs.

  • This video is great man. I like the different parts I didn't get in Brad the toolbassplayer's version. If you wouldn't mind helping me on a few parts of the song? In 2:28 on the high D string are you playing -7-7-3---3-5--14-12? On 2:57 is this on the low D -0-2-3h4--4-5-6h7?( 3:25 through 3:30 you add the extra thumps on the low d. I like that a lot). On 3:36 / 3:40 (and 3:47 through 3:52 I can't tell what you are playing on the low D and A string. Finally 3:51 through 4:19. Thankyou so much!

  • Why the pick? Why?

  • @ThirdEyeOfOuroborus Because sounds WAY better

  • @ThirdEyeOfOuroborus Because that's how the song was made.... That's why...

  • awsome tone man

  • xBadOmen what tuning?

  • @xBadOmen Drop D

    That's tuned low to high "D, A, D, G"

  • Have you ever played a Stingray? If so, do you find that your Sterling is more aggressive sounding? I've got a Ray, and am getting a Sterling soon. I love the way your Sterling sounds man. Just awesome.

  • @DevilsFourString yes I have. these basses are really similar (we can say the same) regarding the sound. The only differences are the splitable pickup, thiner neck on the sterling, and smaller body also.

    Thanks for your comment

  • @remiiiiiii and the wood they are made of

  • watching your videos is real pleasure

  • @Schwabeeck as read this kind of comments :) thanks

  • great job matching the tone. They use really great equipment so most covers cant get it right, but listening to a tool song on poor equipment it like looking at a plaster version of a marble statue, sure you get the form but not the texture. Love it.

  • @j0ejack thanks a lot

  • I'LL KEEP DIGGING....tool is awesome and great job on the bass

  • @jeffro721 thanks

  • @remiiiiiii AWESOME COVER!!!! Could you do a review on this bass, if you haven't already? It sounds perfect! Great job man!!!

  • the break down you play during the bass solo part in the middle is wrong. Also, leading out of it with the "build up" which you just strum on the E is wrong (he does the breakdown during that part). If you watch the Montreal 1996 video that is on the net it shows this part of the song very well. There are also other minor things but overall good job

  • has anyone herd his cover band...freaking awesome...singer sounds almost exactly like maynard

  • how do you get that plinky tone that Justin gets? is it EQ or an effect or what?

  • and then 12 open 12

  • The second time in the chorus is 12, open, 12. Listen closely.

  • omg dude, please play some A Perfect Circle. lol I know you said you didn't plan on it but if you have some extra free time, I'd really like to hear you play it.

  • What Kind Of Amp Do U Use?

  • yeah dude i used to really not be a fan of picks for bass but tool has changed my mind

  • yea man, if they had a finger picking bass it just wouldnt be powerful enough !!

  • Thanks a bunch for the great cover... helped me out a lot when I needed to learn it for my band:)

  • Bad friggin ass.... i love TOOL... I love Justin Chancellor

  • awesome. wish some bass players that were interested in tool lived in my area :(

  • i know your feeling man, i wish a band that liked tool lived in my area 8(

  • if you live in Wisconsin, you may have luck cause that's where i am... GB packers man, even tho the packers suck... except for Jermichael Finley... rofl

  • The tone is so accurate

  • thats because the guy in the vid is using an ernie ball music man stingray bass, justin used the same model in recording Aenima, as well as using the famed Wal bass too.

  • Excellent.

  • How do you get that amazing tone?

  • To me, the two most important points are the bass itself and his pick attack. Also he seems like he trusts his ear rather then tabs and binoculars. Another way he gets that tone is he is pretty much exactly with the recording so it (the recording) will add to the tone as well. Good metal bass tone sounds the best when the midrange

"growl" is cutting through the guitar(s). Just one asshole's opinion.

  • Ah, thank you. Currently I have my lows turned up so I'll try that out.

  • ....epic.

  • that tone is fucking amazing.

    great job man.

  • good job man great cover

  • I hardly ever comment on you tube but your skills are....extraordinary!!!

  • thank you ;) !

  • omg i'm soo jealous of your sound ! 5/5

  • heey Friend, =D Forty Six and 2, please =D

  • already done

  • dude that was amazing!!!

  • hey man at 1:16 there is a slight variation, its (2/ 10, 10, 12, 0, 12) from the previous (2/ 10, 10, 0, 12, 0)

  • DAMN DUDE...I loved your performance...I wish I had my bass to jam.

  • why, where is it :-0

  • As a fan of Tool I really enjoyed this. Great job.

  • thanks

  • which strings you used?

  • :(

everything is explained in my profile, strings included ;)

  • A little High end, but thats what you get with a direct in into the computer. ha. very nice though =]

  • Nice sound :) what you have bassguitar and combo?

  • brilliant cover mate keep it up xD

  • i'm trying to learn this on my bass

  • Awesome cover! Would love to jam with you...

  • hehe, thank u

  • I don't know if this has been asked, but did you learn this by ear, or do you have the sheet music(and if yess, where can i cop that)

  • very awesome! how long id it take u to learn this?

  • I don't remember, a couple of hours I guess

  • a couple of hours to learn this song? You dont even do anything in this song

  • Memorize, get the timing perfect ( 999/999)? Might take an hour or less.... at least 30 minutes.

  • considering how close to perfect he played the song, a couple of hours is pretty good

  • your bass have the same tone of justin's wal... I love it..

  • absolutly amazing! :D

  • dude your da shit =D

  • you really nailed it!

this cover helped me a lot!

    thank you!

  • you're welcome

  • this is good but my all the tabs i find arent the same but i know you sound right..

  • remiiiiiii can you use bass on any amp or do you have to have a bass amp? cause i heard you needed a bass amp because if you use a regualar amp the bass guitar will blow out the speaker?

  • never use a bass on a guitar amp. Only on bass amps

  • to add to what he said. you could play on a guitar amp. technically. But, just get a bass amp it is what it is for and in the end it will only fuck up your guitar amp.

  • sounds kick ass. good job and good video!

  • thank you :)

  • amazing, what kind of bass do you have?

  • read my profile

  • What recording program do you use?

  • This is explained in my profile : cubase ;)

  • where did u get the tabs from

    ?

  • from nowhere. I never use tabs, as I said in my profile

  • I love your tone.

    And all of your videos.

I really favor you over ToolBassPlayer.

Even without the 4 million (or so) dollar setup. Lol. =P

  • thank you very much ! ^^

    It's a nice comment, I appreciate it.

    Cheers =)

  • same here, he screws up alot, and he is just kind of a douche if you ask me

  • Agreed

  • what do you mean? He was nice to me even when I critisized his growling on an Opeth cover. I love this cover, but being all mean to him (Toolbassplayer) on remiiiiiii's vid, won't make remiiiiiiii like you more. Or at least I think so :P

  • the hell are you talking about?

  • I responded to a comment. Not my fault youtube is fucked up sometimes.

  • at like 0:50 how did you get it to make that kind of sour noise im thinking about picking up bass so i dont really know a lot about it

  • you mean on the D string ? (3rd string).

Anyway this part is played like that :

    1) 0 on the D string (1st string)

    2) dead note on the D string (1st string)

    3) 2 (played hard!) on the D string (3rd string)

I hope this will help you, if not please ask ;)

  • thanks i thought you were just playing the note harder guess i was right. and your badass at bass incase you didnt already know

  • u'r right ;)

and thanks for your comment !

  • Dude.... this is beautiful. The tone is amazing! Are you using a plastic guitar pick, or a felt bass pick? Sounds plastic.

    Very nice, man. =)

  • Thank you very much.

Plastic Pick (Dunlop Turtle 1.14 mm)

  • good work dude, im bassist to and your fingers are very clean

  • Thanks,

Yes, it's because I use soap before recording :D

  • wtf? I'm sorry, that comment just confused me

  • lol me too

  • theres no decent tabs for this song. you play it pretty good

  • thank you

  • my lord you are such a badass bro this is amazing play u have inspired me to learn this song!!!!! :)

  • Hello, thank for your comment ! ;)

  • wow dude, that is some amazing tone,do stingray's sound similar to that??

  • woops, I forgot to answer to this one :)

Yep a Stingray will sound similar ;)

  • Is there just one Humbucker?

  • yes

  • Amazing playing! I absolutely love your tone too, phenomenal! You're almost convincing me to sell my Warwick for a Sterling!!!

  • thank you dude. Try to use a Sansamp before sell your bass ;)

  • good job

so how do you set up the bass tone

    i also have musicman bass

  • Thanks,

here's my setup : Sterling (1/4 boost on bass & treble) > Sansamp RBI > Mackie Satellite > Cubase on PC

    Cheers =)

  • Hey, excellent job. I learned almost the whole thing in about half an hour from just watching this a couple times. I have one question, though; Are you in Drop D or a different tuning. I thought the song was in drop d but i have a couple dissonant-sounding notes, might just be the way my setup is though

  • Many thanks !

Yes it's a drop D tunning, like in almost all Tool's songs ;)

    Bye !

  • Is it hard to play a guitar like that?

  • ? hum .. no

You know that this is a bass, right ?

  • Is that a stingray or sterling?

  • sterling

  • wo i thought you were actually playing the beginning by tapping the strings
