  • Same thing with the M14.

    Did that in Basic...

  • @aalsha3 The only people fighting the Dutch in WW2 were the Germans.

  • @aalsha3 dutch? do you mean german?

  • That's how we were taught in ROTC... what's the point of the vid?

  • does that kid have a fucking gun?

  • That was gay

  • The M1 is to be respected and whenever you're interacting with the bolt, you must always be paying attention. I've gotten it several times in different levels of severity, but every time was because I wasn't paying attention. It's only happened when I was cleaning or function checking, but never on the range. That is when I'm most attentive.

  • and people say weapons cant bite back

  • damm man wen i got my garand not to long ago, i waz loadin it bamm fuckin bitch that hurt so lokking how to load it rigth way

  • so its true.. weapons can hurt >.<

  • than fire. firing your thumb lol :)

  • very clever, would've saved me a black thumb nail if i would've watched this a while ago hehe

  • can't you hold the bolt back while putting the clip in and it won't snap back that fast?

  • @Idoyourh0e He is holding the bolt back with the same hand he's using to insert the clip.

  • @mauiboynokaoi what if you insert the clip with one hand and hold back the bolt with the other then you will never experience the garand thumb

  • @Idoyourh0e That's just like saying that you would hold an old M1911 with a clamp and pull the trigger with your hand so you would never experience hammer bite. It's ridiculously impractical when you have a much simpler solution at your fingertips.

  • @mauiboynokaoi okay then

  • @Idoyourh0e You actually hold the bolt back with the base of your pinky finger, while your thumb loads in the clip, once the clip is in, remove your thumb, then remove your pinky. Its how soldiers used to do it, and how I do it, and I've never once had M1 thumb....and I've been shooting it for 19 years now.

  • @LoneWolf051 can you use another finger to hold back the bolt?

  • @Idoyourh0e Yeah, but it'd be extremely hard, because you'd be using 2 hands to load it, why not ust use 1 hand? unles you're left handed, in which you'd have quite a difficult time with it.

  • @LoneWolf051 i am actually left-handed, but i agree

  • I lost a nail to my M1 on the first day I got it. I was like "oooo, got me a perty garund fer me bday"

and the m1 said back, "BAMM, BITCH FUCKING RESPECT ME"

    and i was like "Yessir"

  • @FiedtheNeedIT1 Hahaha that's sure!!!

  • Explain what your doing if it werent for your title then i would have guessed you were just playing with it!

  • damn the sound made me shit myself :/

  • I guess you could call M1's 'Digit eaters'. And i guess i can see why people simply assume it cant be reloaded mid clip, you'd have to be either dumb or a soldier to stick a finger in that guillotine.

  • that really hurys bruised my thumb for a week.

  • i remember when i was teaching my 12 year old cousin how to shoot a rifle. That M1 is just like a damn semi automatic twelve gauge. you fuck up you get your thumb crushed. my cousin freaked out while loading it and the bolt closed on his thumb. that same thing happened to me and my friend when we was shooting semi automatic shotguns. he didn't watch his finger and got a chunk of his pinky ripped off. I've got M1 thumb. it hurts like fuck. be careful when you're loading the motherfucker.

  • Garand thumb hurts like fuckin' hell. No whining, it really, really hurts. Fear it.

  • @epicsr i couldn't agree with you more. i've got a bad M1 thumb right now because i wasn't paying atention. i was trying to talk and load it all at the same time. you know what the nickname for the M1 Garand is? the nickname is the "Thumbbuster rifle".

  • @JaredChastain1 When i was done shooting, my buds were yelling: "Hey Martin, let's grab a couple of beers!" So i got up and let the bolt ride forward, just like in this vid. Only i didn't let it ease forward, i let it slam shut. No problem, if i wasn't a fraction too slow in removing my thumb from the follower. It didn't hurt that bad, at that moment. The pain came later that night. I couldn't sleep because of it. More than half a year later my nail and thumb looked like a piece of zombie-flesh.

  • @epicsr back in June about two days after my birthday. i was getting ready to go target practicing when my uncle walked in the door. he had never heard about me owning an M1 Garand rifle and started talking his amazement and shit. i replied to him, telling him where i got it and all that and when i let my thumb off the clip i didn't bother to move my thumb away so the bolt closed on my thumb. It didn't hurt me very much at the moment either but now it looks like i bashed it with a hammer.

  • @JaredChastain1 lol Garand thumb aka insta-gib thumb. Ak47 is also fun, in that the bolt/bolt carrier doesn't stay open after the last shot. However, the carrier can 'snag' a little on the hammer when returning to battery. So, if you have an empty case that didn't eject right, you can rest the carrier on that sweet spot and fish the case out. But don't rock the gun too hard, or *WHAM* it 'll slam shut with your fingers in between. Cussin' and giggles at the range guaranteed.

  • How much shooting do you do in your bedroom?

Nice video. Gottta hate the dreaded "Garand thumb."

DCBakerEsq60 - The IP Law Minute

  • You don't release the chamber? And if the bol is pulled all the way back you stick the clip in all the way.... It wontslam shut till you let pressure off the spring the way he showed. Works well as a all around means of loading

  • Got my M1 this week and within 10 minutes of getting it home stupidly proceeded to give myself M1 finger (not thumb). Thought I was going to lose the nail, but it's getting better now. Guess every Garand owner has it happen once ;)

  • the M1 Garand AKA "The Thumb Buster"

  • @xXdEaThSeQuEnCeXx LOL, only if you dont know how to load it right.

  • i ve done it before, and learned me lesson, it fuckin kills. haha

  • when you load the m1 how do you release the chamber so you can fire it, and when you load it do you hold it tight to prevent m1 thumb?

  • what i do to prevent garand thumb is push down till the bolt unlocks and hits ur thumb then i let go and take my hand out

  • man that's gotta hurt

  • My grandad was shot by a M1 Garand In Normandy :(

The thing is, it was a teammate!

  • @billyscooter422 holy shit. thats a 30-06 shot. did he live?

  • @XXXMAC187XXX Unfortunately not that guy was a bit of a headcased asshole!

  • I don't know why people are trying to prevent Garand Thumb. I consider it a "right of passage". LOL

  • how old r u? :s

  • im in high school JROTC, and we do military funerals with the garand

  • I'm with an ROTC unit. We drill with Garands. I've found that it only takes one slammed thumb to learn not to do it again.

  • lol, as said many many times, it's not going to break bone...

  • My grandfather was in the Marines around 1952 and he told me that when they were in training if they got their thumb caught in it they would have to open it back up with their teeth to get their thumb out.

  • It's true.

Although earlier during the beginning of the Normandy Breakout, they didn't have to do that.

My Great Grandpa fought in the Normady Breakout, and he said it got stuck in war. But he said all he had to do was just pull the bolt back farther then take his thumb out.

    :)

  • Thanks for showing this... I had heard of it but wasn't sure how it happend.

  • @the82spartans Lol thanks to you to comment. I think this can be very helpful to know

  • LOL, I dropped the hammer from a single action pistol on my thumb. But my finger was sideways in between the action and hammer, so it split my thumg open.

  • Garand thumb is when you load a clip in, And you don't expect the action to close, So it closes on your thumb. Leaves a nasty bruise and the thumb tender for a few days, Luckily it's a lesson you only need to learn once if you ever fell prey to Garand thumb

  • When you get m1 thumb. Does it bleed slot or does it just leave a really bad bruise

  • uaually just leaves a blood blister under the nail

  • Ha Ha! I diddnt get my thumb caught while loading. BUT I got my finger slamed while cleaning it for the first time. The patch came off the cleaning rod and sat on the folower. I went to get it and, SLAM!!! MOTHER F%&@?# It has never happened again.

  • @Sweet68Camaro hahaha that's what exactly happend to me when i first got my M1 Garand i was cleaning it and my m1 i have to pull it back twice and i only did first and i jiggled it enough when i put my finger in there and ya still have it today that was three months ago.

  • so let me get this straight, the m1 thumb is when the bolt slams on your thumb. Also where did you get you m1>

  • Gun dealer

  • My thumb got FUCKED up. I had to use a needle to melt through the nail and relieve the pressure. Went to the doc and got an xray and some pills also.

  • yeah man that bolt and the bolt lug is mean

  • Thanks, I already knew this but thanks anyways!

  • i can see how that would suck getting your finger slammed in there.

  • thank god

  • You get a bruise. I think. The same thing happened to my cousin.

  • ya probably

  • to me i got a bruise too. i also was bleeding but the skin wasnt pierced

  • @shinymarshtop2 blunt force trauma :(

  • Shit

Hey, what damage it does on the thumb?

  • i got garand thumb once :( that wasnt a good day i already burned myself on the same thumb
