There both great versions, as they both represent different aspects of the human condition and musical feelings. Just because it's different, doesn't make it any less good. As long as it's genuine
I got all excited when I heard it was a stones cover, and wanted to hear it, and I was absolutely amazed at how little i liked the stones version. The guns and roses video on youtube of them singing it is just as HORRIBLE! It's quite the testament to townes imo that he can make it so hard to believe that he didn't write the song in the first place.
@fmayson I think it's actually a Jagger/Richards song. Townes did lots of btilliant covers from MerleTravis to Lighnin Hopkins and.... The Rolling Stones.
This particular version is about the prettiest ever though!
Where does this misinformation keep popping up from? Townes sometimes joked about it being his, or an old folk song, but he told a lot of stories and understood his audience knew the Stones. Check out the album (Roadsongs) that this is on- it is an album of covers Townes did live, and the liner notes clearly say Jagger/Richards. Still, I love this version.
@fmayson It is a cover of a Rolling Stones song. I'm not really sure why this is an argument, as it's easy to look up. Still, Townes did it better. :)
this may be the greatest cover of any Stones song. Jagger admitted that Keith should have done the vocals on the original due to his gutteral vocals. But TVZ sticks the needle in your heart.
my brother does this song justice when he sings this.

Townes has that low-down pain in his voice that is so mesmerizing. Not many had it. Hank Williams. Janis. Tommy Johnson. Can't be faked.
