the reason the animator chose a Japanese army officer is because army guys were assholes even in Japan; I have posted this before for angry Chinese, before raping Chinese women, Japanese army guys practiced on their own women first, meaning Japanese women were their first victims, not Chinese and Korean.
Also understand that Hirai cannot destroy Kato because Kato is fueled by the souls of Hirai's ancestors. The old man puts up a massive struggle; against any other demon, he would have won. But when the enemy is just an incarnation of your own power...Well, there are some problems.
Kato would leave Bison for dead. He's one evil fuck. They definitely need to make an update of this. Apparently Yasunori was indeed the inspiration for Bison.
2005 Great Yokai War (Kato comes back in modern times and sports a cool black jacket!)
He's not as popular as Dracula, so given that the last KAto movie was three years ago, he's doing damn good. What we really need is to put the other two live action movies on region 1 DVD!
That's what I'm talking about! That's why I'm so frustrated! :) Despite the HUGE scope of the series that's been written over the course of about 30 years now, we don't have a single book translated into English. There's such a huge influx of Japanese anime, manga, video games, movies, etc. reaching American store shelves every day. I don't see why can't we even have ONE of Hiroshi Aramata's books translated!
"Believe me, there are multitudes of characters as evil or even more evil than Kato."--Thedoctor19000
I have to respectfully disagree with you. I saw the live-action version of "Teito Monogatari" several years ago, and my definition of "evil" was changed forever. The ass is so relentlessly unstoppable in his ambitions and his sadism.
Give me a few examples of characters more evil than Kato. If I disagree with you, then we need to redefine evil.
Alright. Here are a few examples of characters who are possibly as or more evil than Kato.:
1) Alucard: "Hellsing". (This is the historical Vlad the Impaler we are talking about in a fictitious form.)
2) Keyser Söze: "The Usual Suspects." (This guy does not need to bsupernatural to be considered "mythical". He committed such terrible acts that he was called "The Devil".)
3) Frieza: "Dragonball Z". (Kills millions of people with one finger.)
1) Alucard/Vlad is an antihero. He's redeemed himself...he now saves the world from vampires and serves humanity. Although he may seem unnecessarily cruel to his opponents, they usually deserve it.
BTW, Kato is never redeemed (he pops up in many novels after this)
2) Kato's not after revenge and he has no reason to be. He doesn't hold an empire and does not seek to conquer anything. He hurts BECAUSE HE CAN and he justifies it with BS propaganda.
As I feared, our views of "evil" might not be the same. Kato strikes me as frightening because he follows a pseudo-skin-head/military philosophy, he's nearly indestructible and he's directly connected to the holy energies that are trying to stop him (Hirai can't kill him because their magics are the same). Imagine if Hitler's darkest side was given immeasurable--we get an almighty sadist, extremist, hypocrite, devil, etc.
I would actually want Alucard to save us from him.
Actually, Keyser Soze is pretty bad...I need to watch "Usual Suspects" again.
For a pseudo-Kato character, I was thinking of the Joker from "TDK". When I think of "evil", I think of men with these sadistic, cruel philosophies. Like the Joker, it's apparent that Kato just wants to "Watch the world burn." But Kato is also a hypocrite, claiming that he's doing this for a just cause; absolute BS given that he's fighting the same people--the mystics of Tokyo--that he claims to be helping!
omg i have not seen this in ages! i used to love this anime and was so freaked out by it at the same time.. has anyone got full episodes and in english?
they have the Japanese original DVD; you should be able to get it anywhere. Be careful though; there is the original, English dub only Streamline pictures production, and then there is a new edition with the Japanese original. The Japanese original is much better; the English voice acting was crap.
@stardingo747 Yeah, back then the actors were inexperienced at the time. I did enjoy watching the Fist of the North Star movie, and Akira, even though some didn't like it. But hey, I just have my own thoughts. But Steamline was just the beginning. Those same actors would get better as time progressed
On a side note, Jeff Winkless, the english voice of Kato passed away back in 2006. He died from a brain tumor.
Been looking the whole set of this in english for ages. Vey strange but cool manga, kato is a fucking weirdo though, very like m. bison? all sorts happens in this anime, incest, rape, very stange!
i wish bison was like that.
or ryu and ken somewhere appear and both of then make a hadouken kkkkkkkkkk

By contrast, he's had like 20 books written about him.

Anyone interested in a continuation of the story can watch the live-action sequel
帝都大戦
(search the above term on Youtube for the opening scenes)
It doesn't follow the book very well though (or so I've heard).

to the Japanese, a Japanese army uniform of the early 19th century, and WWII, is a symbol of evil, that is why that look was chosen for Kato.
